Bolshoi Theater repertoire for September 2017

For more than two centuries, the New Year in Russia was celebrated in September. Time passed, a lot has changed. But the long tradition of starting business in the first month of autumn resonates to this day. In September, schoolchildren sit down at their desks, students begin their studies. And the Bolshoi Theater opens a new season - 242!

The repertoire for September 2017 at the main theater of the country pleases with a constellation of familiar and already beloved productions. Large-scale, epic operas from Russian history "Boris Godunov" and "Prince Igor", exemplary buffa operas "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Pasquale", the cheerful and unrestrained ballet "Don Quixote", the lyrical and tragic performance "The Flames of Paris".

The Bolshoi Theater opens the premiere parade of the new season with a wonderful performance for the whole family. The musical compositions "Carnival of the Animals" and "Guide to the Orchestra for Young Listeners" were recognized as the best educational works for growing theatergoers. For all children who are not indifferent to music, tickets to the Bolshoi Theater for September will be a wonderful gift.

In September, the Bolshoi Theater will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the outstanding director Yuri Lyubimov. First, the opera Boris Godunov, one of the last productions of the master, will take place. And at the end of the month, on September 30, on Lyubimov's birthday, a festive concert will take place, at which nominal prizes of the meter will be awarded.

Masquerade. Memories of the future

Tour of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. A large-scale, mystical canvas about the torments of jealousy and suffering. The story described in Mikhail Lermontov's drama "Masquerade" and directorially interpreted by Vsevolod Meyerhold formed the basis of Valery Fokin's production. Despite the historical scenery and costumes, the action of the performance is out of time and out of space.

Boris Godunov

The greatest work in terms of meaning and musical language. Modest Mussorgsky's opera is based on real historical events. The composer himself defined its genre as "folk musical drama". And quite rightly, because the protagonist of the opera is the common people. "Boris Godunov" is rightfully considered a reference example of the "grand style" and is the most popular Russian opera in the West, revealing the "mysterious Russian soul".

love potion

The State Academic Symphony Chapel is recognized as one of the highly professional and creatively interesting musical groups in Russia. The unique team unconventionally combines an orchestra, choir and soloists. The "universal" structure of the chapel allows you to perform works of various genres. Concert versions of operatic masterpieces sound especially delightful in her performance. Gaetano Donizetti's opera L'elisir d'amore is no exception.

Swan Lake

The legend of Russian classical ballet - "Swan Lake" - is a marvelous, amazing choreographic performance about kindness and cruelty, love and betrayal. The mystical plot, the magical, bewitching dance, the magical, captivating music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky are the components of success and the guarantor of the love and adoration of the audience.

Wedding of Figaro

A modern version of the "ideal comic opera" to the delightful music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The action of the cheerful and spectacular performance-holiday was moved to the 60s of the last century, the characters gladly “tried on” the expressive aesthetics of a bright, turning point time. Director Yevgeny Pisarev is not the first time working with the work of Beaumarchais - he also has a production about the bold and resourceful Figaro in the drama theater. .

Don Quixote

A funny, ironic and charming story set to the cheerful music of Ludwig Minkus. The enchanting production is replete with unbridled passions and love affairs. From the work of Cervantes in the ballet, only the name of the glorious hidalgo remains, and the main characters - Kitri and Basil - are a figment of the director Marius Petipa's imagination. "Don Quixote" is the only ancient ballet that "originated" on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater.

Sometimes music embraces the spirit like the sea

Masterpieces of French music of the 20th century performed by artists of the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra. The concert is a great opportunity to look from the present at the charming music of the past, to feel the enchanting musical scenes of France and enjoy the amazingly beautiful works.

Don Pasquale

An old comedy, exemplary opera-buffa "Don Pasquale" by Gaetano Donizetti, presented in a modern setting. Directed by Timofey Kulyabin, known for his unexpected and bold decisions, this is an elegant, slightly sad production about very real, living people with their own biography, about old age and about love.

Animal Carnival. The Young Listener's Guide to the Orchestra

Wonderful, fascinating compositions, the world's most popular educational musical compositions for children. Comic in form and seriously ironic in content, the Carnival of the Animals suite by Camille Saint-Saens is a "zoological fantasy" consisting of laconic, original in instrumental composition 14 numbers. Enlightenment musician Benjamin Britten's magnificent "Guide to the Orchestra" reveals the amazing and vibrant world of symphonic music.

Prince Igor

A large-scale epic presentation of the key moments of Russian history with emotional and patriotic overtones. The work of Alexander Borodin "Prince Igor", with a deep content, scope of narration, melody, harmony and indescribable national flavor, is a masterpiece of Russian opera art and an example of Russian monumental opera.

Flames of Paris

Beautiful and merciless events of the Great French Revolution, framed by the music of the Soviet composer Boris Asafiev. The choreographic version by Alexei Ratmansky is a rethought and revised author's work. Carefully handling the musical component, the director completely excluded political vicissitudes from the performance and focused on the complex, confusing relations between peasants and nobles.

Etudes, Carmen Suite

Two wonderful one-act ballets - in one evening on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater. The skillful "Etudes" to the virtuoso music of Karl Czerny, staged by the Danish choreographer Harald Lander, conquered the whole world - a hymn to dance, an ode to a ballet lesson. And the passionate, unrestrained "Carmen Suite", staged by Alberto Alonso to the music of Georges Bizet, orchestrated by Rodion Shchedrin.

Concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Yuri Lyubimov

A tribute to the memory of the outstanding director Yuri Lyubimov, who performed his last magnificent productions on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater. At a beautiful concert, awards named after the meter will be presented.

with intermission

Performance-winner of the Highest Theater Award of Lithuania "Golden Stage Cross" 2016

Best Director - Christian Lupa

"Best Video Design" - Lukasz Twarkowski

"Best Actor" - Valentinas Masalskikh for the role of Shuster,

"Best Actress" - Egle Gabrenaite for the role of Frau Zittel

The play by Thomas Bernhard "Heroes' Square" was written in 1988, a year before the author's death, and is a kind of warning to modern society. The events also take place in 1988, but they refer us to a specific day - March 15, 1938, on this day Adolf Hitler spoke on the central square of Vienna - Heroes' Square. After 50 years in an apartment near the Heroes' Square, the Shuster family comes together. Professor Schuster, a thinker and philosopher who fled the Nazis from Austria to Oxford, was invited by the mayor of Vienna to return to the university in the 60s. However, back in Vienna, he sees no other way out than suicide. Precisely because the situation in modern Austria is "much worse than 50 years ago." The fate of Joseph Schuster in a political drama openly exposes the political, moral and spiritual understanding of the situation in Austria.

The performance based on the play "Heroes' Square" was staged at the National Drama Theater of Lithuania (Vilnius) by one of the leaders of the modern world theater, the famous Polish director Krystian Lupa. For this performance, Kristian Lupe was awarded the highest Lithuanian theatrical award - the Golden Cross of the Stage. In the summer of 2016, the "Heroes' Square" became one of the main events of the Avignon Festival. The problems of self-reflection of the Austrians, reflected by Thomas Bernhard, at the end of the 20th century turned out to be relevant for the entire modern society.

Christian Lupa is the recipient of many prestigious professional prizes and awards, including the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Cultural Merit, the Order of the Rebirth of Poland, the French Order of Arts and Literature and the Austrian Badge of Honor for Science and Art.

Christian Lupa staged his first Russian performance on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, the premiere of this version of Chekhov's The Seagull opened the program of the Second Alexandrinsky International Theater Festival in 2007.

Joint production with the International Theater Festival "Divine Comedy"

The performance was created with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania,

Lithuanian Council for Culture and Polish Institute in Vilnius (Lithuania)

In 2016, the performance was awarded the French Association of Theater Critics Award ("Best International Performance in France").
