The American was impressed by the film “They Fought for the Motherland.” The American professor watched “the greatest film about the war. Americans about the film "They Fought for Their Motherland"

I understand perfectly well that few viewers overseas have seen the film “They Fought for the Motherland” - Soviet movies about the war are not particularly popular in the States. All the more interesting is the opinion of those few who still watched this film. By advice or by accident, it doesn’t matter. Here is a translation of some comments from American viewers

A great film about a group of soldiers trying to prevent the Nazis from advancing deep into Soviet territory.

1942 The war in Russia is going badly for the Russians. They are slowly retreating under the onslaught of the Nazis. This is the story of a regiment, the number of fighters in which is decreasing and decreasing, and the survivors are trying to remain optimistic during the battles that do not allow the enemy to reach Stalingrad.

This - great movie about war. Like everything that Sergei Bondarchuk shot, this film makes you think and feel, shows you what one person can do in emergency. We are shown what various characters think while in battle. The battle scenes are very good Russian soldiers just trying to survive under fire, bombing and trying to keep the Germans far enough away to not give them a chance to kill them.

In some ways, this film reminded me of Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line, which used similar techniques (eg subjective camera, soundtrack manipulation, disjointed flashback) at times. Actually this movie reminded me of several other war movies that came out after its release, I wonder if filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola and others studied copies of this movie, they couldn't help but see this movie when they were making stuff like this, like Apocalypse Now

The film is good, but it's not perfect. He may seem at times too “Hurray-Hurray” for Mother Russia, although, ultimately, he talks more about defending his Motherland. The film is also a bit spread out in the second half, featuring minor subplots; then again, like a second wind, very strong images with a young nurse trying to pull a wounded man out of a crater or the return of a soldier from the hospital to the regiment

Watch this movie. This is a great movie about a great war.

I don't understand why I've never heard of this movie before. I came across him by chance and decided to give him a chance.

And Wow! I think a novel could be written about what makes this movie great. But that would be too much to comment on, so I'll stick to the generalities.

This is a war film about Russians fighting against the Germans in World War II. From the outside it looks a lot like the old ones American movies about World War II, focusing on a small group of soldiers in one unit.

The director has done so much that I don't even know where to start.

The film shows us the realities of war, including the time between battles when soldiers joke with each other.

But the viewer never gets bored, even when the action gives way to drama. The reason is that the script is so well written that I even have to thank whoever translated it into English for me, because these dialogues would be the envy of any American writer.

One of the smartest things is that the writer-director shows reality from the very beginning, without letting us know who will survive and who will be the central character.

Two characters dominate the story, the womanizer and the cook. However, the other characters are also impressive.

What this movie really does is the humor, the dark humor, it really makes you laugh and cry at the same time. When one old veteran talks about his trench sickness, you laugh along with the other soldiers. It's one of those stories that sounds like hell when you're living through it, but it's funny when you tell it after the war.

For me it’s just such magic that I can’t tell you without spoilers.

The camera work is amazing. The dramatic component is amazing. The acting is amazing. Okay, everything about it is amazing!

Bondarchuk's World War II film has great sets (as usual) and mesmerizingly polished pyrotechnic effects. Two big battle scenes with lots of cool explosions and a model of a Panzer IV tank, but a lack of emphasis, drama and realism. German soldiers don't seem motivated. The first battle scene is particularly disappointing - German tanks easily explode with just one rifle shot and the Germans retreat too quickly. Meanwhile, among the good Russian freedom fighters, no one was hurt.

In the middle of the film there is a huge battle scene with the complete destruction of the city, including a very cool plane crash and explosion. For the next 10 minutes there is nothing bad in the film - Bondarchuk himself plays a large role as a shell-shocked soldier during a bayonet counterattack on the Germans while artillery shells everything around him. Very cool! The problem is that after this point everything goes downhill, even though the film goes on for another hour! This last hour really goes without much action - just a lot of boring chatter.

Also, one of the cameras used in a big battle scene had the dirtiest lens I've ever seen in a big budget movie. It's very distracting and ruins what's best about the classic battle scenes. What's happened?

And here's another interesting video with an American's opinion about this film
