To be the first is the Tusur style. To be first is the Tusur way To fly to the Moon and Mars

TUSUR is the youngest of the Tomsk universities, but it has never been in the shadow of its older brothers. Created at a time of breakthrough into space, the rapid development of electronic computing technology, new means of communication and radio electronics, it continues to remain at the forefront of scientific and technological progress.

Why do applicants from Russia, the CIS countries and the world choose Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radio Electronics as a launching pad into adulthood? Tomsk News correspondents turned to Director of the Education Department of TUSUR, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Professor Pavel Troyan and the head of the TUSUR student recruitment and placement department, executive secretary of the admissions committee, Alexey Mozgunov.

Motivation to study

– When did the admissions campaign begin for your university and how long will it last?

Pavel Troyan:

– Now for all of us the admissions campaign is business number one. Although we carry out this work year-round, from August to August. A recruitment and distribution department has been organized specifically for this purpose.

Alexey Mozgunov:

– But I say it differently: our admissions campaign lasts 13 months – from September last year to October this year. Now all selection committees are working, applicants apply to them. We are not limited to Tomsk and the region. We have a very wide geography: from the Far East to the Urals.

– On the first floor of the main building, all applicants are greeted by friendly staff of the student admissions committee in a uniform, beautiful uniform. They are ready to provide complete information about the university and direct young people to classrooms allocated for specific faculties. What other forms of document acceptance do you practice?

Alexey Mozgunov:

– For several years now, applicants have been able to submit documents electronically through their personal account - we are a university of new information technologies, for us this is our native element. The site operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We can see that there are currently 900 applications being filled out online. We are in no way bound by geography: Moscow and Chita, Yakutsk and Kemerovo - our university is open to everyone.

– Like most universities, you organize the work of on-site admissions committees. Do you have a lot of them?

Pavel Troyan:

– Our admissions committees work in three former Soviet republics – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Together with Russian cities, the number of university representative offices is approaching 80. They operate year-round. Working with them, we rely on prepared, motivated applicants, people who want to learn. After all, they say here: entering TUSUR is easier than graduating from it.

Fly to the Moon and Mars

– What kind of applicant are you expecting this year? What passing score will you aim for?

Alexey Mozgunov:

– The average passing score on TUSUR is slowly but surely growing. This is reflected in performance monitoring. At the same time, I always emphasize that a student with a total of 180 Unified State Exam points in three subjects is no worse than a student with higher results: he is quite learnable and can be more motivated than an excellent student.

Pavel Troyan:

– When choosing a university, an applicant must answer the question “Where will I work later?” In this regard, we compare favorably with other Tomsk universities. The other day a letter was sent to the rector of TUSUR from the Federal Space Agency - NPO named after. Lavochkin (the association is engaged in the manufacture of spacecraft and deep space research. – Ed.). This is a kind of emergency request for young TUSUR specialists from 2016. The list of directions took up almost a page, about three dozen people are needed. Young engineers are needed by units that support the Russian lunar program in conjunction with the upcoming expedition to Mars. Our graduates are guaranteed accommodation, a salary of 50 thousand rubles, and travel. How many do you think we were able to guide? Only three, because the rest of the graduates had already found jobs.

There are dozens more similar letters from enterprises of the military-industrial complex, oil companies, Roscosmos, Rosatom, Ruselectronics and others.

Recently, the results of monitoring the official employment of graduates of domestic universities were summed up. TUSUR was in first place among Tomsk universities. The level of wages in the first year of work also plays an important role. For TUSUR graduates, starting income is 40–100 thousand rubles, employment geography is Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Irkutsk, Snezhinsk, Sarov, Fryazino.

– Returning to the admissions campaign, how many budget places are allocated to your university this year?

Alexey Mozgunov:

– There are 718 budget places for bachelor’s degrees, 105 for specialist courses, and 349 for master’s degrees. In total, there are 1,172 places. A special feature of this year was that the Ministry of Education and Science did not allocate us a single budget place for non-core faculties - humanities, economics and law, but interest in them from applicants is still high.

– How many target soldiers are you training now?

Pavel Troyan:

– The number of target places is determined by the Ministry of Education and Science. Now we will train 100 young specialists for Altai, the republics of Sakha, Tyva, and defense industry enterprises.

Alexey Mozgunov:

– This area has been taken under special control by the state. In order to count on a particular specialist in the future, the enterprise is obliged to provide him with a number of social support measures - an additional scholarship, travel to his place of work, housing, and so on.

Where are they going together?

– In which areas do you expect the highest competition?

Alexey Mozgunov:

– In specialties related to information and economic security, 180 applications have already been submitted for 100 budget places in two weeks of admission. Plus 75 payers. The picture is practically the same in the areas of IT training - for 100 places there are almost 350 sets of documents.

Today, the results of the Unified State Examination in physics became known very late, so the surge in applications from applicants occurred on July 4th. Since that day, our employees have been accepting an average of 250–300 applications per day.

It’s a paradox, but we have many people who want to study on a paid basis. In two weeks of work, we have already received a fairly large number of applications in areas such as economic security, economics, management, ecology and jurisprudence.

Pavel Troyan:

– We mainly recruit engineering students for the engineering corps of defense industry enterprises, which today is actively supported by the state. We are confident about the future of specialists in this field: they are definitely guaranteed work for the next 15–20 years. But our graduates are not entirely willing to leave Tomsk - they find employment in companies such as Mikran, EleSi, and Polyus. One research institute of PP is worth something, there is now a generational change going on there. I repeat once again: we do not have a problem of finding a job, we have another problem - who to send at the request of various departments, because TUSUR graduates have no problem finding a job on their own.

I recently visited with a representative of one of the oil and gas enterprises in Noyabrsk. He noted that his company has implemented limited hiring. But it does not apply to TUSUR graduates.

– Are there any benefits provided for 2016 applicants?

Pavel Troyan:

– Applicants who have 240 points on the Unified State Exam and above, or who have become winners or prize-winners of All-Russian and ministerial school Olympiads, will receive 7 thousand rubles monthly during the first semester. I never tire of repeating to first-year students: studying at TUSUR is not only prestigious, but also economically profitable. We have students who receive up to 45-50 thousand rubles - these are personal, presidential, government and other scholarships, along with grants and allowances.

Alexey Mozgunov:

– We always tell our students that at our university they can earn money on their own starting from the second or third semester, they do not need to look for some kind of part-time job on the side. But in the first semester we pay them money for their school achievements.

– What awaits applicants if they are admitted to TUSUR?

Pavel Troyan:

– We provide all nonresident first-year students with places in dormitories, each with its own canteens, laundries, and Internet. We have enough gyms, an active extracurricular activity center for 1 thousand people, a sports and recreation complex, and a sports camp.

– What advice do you have for current applicants?

Alexey Mozgunov:

– It is clear that the choice of university should not be made in July, but much earlier. Well, for those who still have doubts, I invite you to TUSUR. Here young people are provided with a high-quality, time-demanded education.

Pavel Troyan:

– You definitely need to get an education in Russia. In Russia you need to study only in Tomsk. In Tomsk, you must enroll in TUSUR. It’s not for nothing that our slogan says: when choosing the future, choose TUSUR!
