Breathing during pop vocal lessons

Correct breathing is the foundation on which you can build a building in any architectural style or build a voice for singing in various musical styles: pop vocals, jazz vocals, classical vocals, etc. If you hear a singer’s strong, spacious voice, then this is not so much natural ability as good breathing. It is these voices that we remember, are able to influence us, and we want to imitate them.

Proper use of a breathing apparatus makes it possible not only to sing long phrases in one breath, but, most importantly, opens up new possibilities for your voice. Using the abdominal muscles and diaphragm during pop singing relieves stress and pressure (tightness) from the throat muscles. Due to this, your throat will never get tired, you will not be able to break your voice, and you will give it the opportunity to develop both up and down equally easily. During vocal lessons you will learn special exercises to develop the muscles responsible for support when singing. Read more about this on the page Breathing.

Voice training and its development in pop vocal lessons

How voice training for pop vocals differs from voice training for other types of singing in our vocal lessons, you can read here. Exercises that develop the voice for pop singing and exercises that prepare the voice for jazz singing or academic vocals are the same. But different types of singing use different sound delivery and different sound production techniques. Without special training in vocal lessons, you will not be able to develop your vocal range and master various vocal techniques. This means that you can sing only the simplest (often primitive) pop songs, provided that the tonality of the song is comfortable for you, the range of the melody is small and the manner of performance is semi-recitative. High-quality pop vocals imply a strong, developed voice of the vocalist with great technical freedom of performance.

Often, at the first stage of pop vocal training, our students, aimed at professional development, practice voice training with our academic vocal teachers. After all, performing on the theater stage, academic singers have to sing without a microphone, accompanied by a large symphony orchestra. In this mode of singing, your voice will withstand the load only if you trained it correctly in classes. Most often, modern pop performers cannot be heard without a microphone at all. Because from the very beginning they are accustomed to singing into a microphone without support, without correct voice production. This is why we recommend that our students sing without a microphone most of the time during pop vocal lessons, in order to properly configure the respiratory-vocal apparatus, so that your voice is not afraid of any stress and any singing conditions. Read more about this in the article Working with a microphone in pop vocal lessons.

Vocal techniques of singing in pop vocals

The simplest technique in pop singing (as in academic singing) and the most complex at the same time is cantilena (Italian cantilena, from Latin cantilena - singing), which means the most melodious sound, a smooth, even transition from one sound to another. This is a basic technique, something that you begin to practice in your first pop vocal lessons. Only after you have mastered this singing technique can you move on to learning other singing techniques. Cantilena is translated as singing. Singing is precisely the mastery of a smooth and melodious voice.

In modern pop music there are many directions that require mastery of other various singing techniques:

Rap- This is a rhythmic recitative against the background of instrumental accompaniment. The part of the soloist - rapper assumes virtuoso control of the voice within the conversational range. Often the performer's unprofessional approach to recitation leads to the fact that the voice shrinks and the throat begins to hurt. We urge you to take this seriously and learn a different style of recitation, which will completely relieve the strain on your throat. During the pop vocal lesson, our teacher will help you master the techniques of rapping.

R'n'B (R&B) the music uses soft melodic vocals, derived from the singing style of African Americans. Compared to ordinary pop music, it requires more virtuosic vocal control and greater vocal mobility.

Soul- one of the directions of jazz music. In modern pop music of a calm, measured nature, you can often hear the influence of this jazz style. Soul is based on the blues scale and blues harmonies, hence the vocal techniques - sliding intonations, low scale steps, glissando, etc.

Rock, metal– styles such as death, black, thrash and doom metal, grindcore, deathcore, screamo, emocore, imply mastery of growling and screaming (read on the page Types of singing). With our singing teachers in a pop vocal lesson, you will easily master these vocal techniques.

Do not forget that any vocal techniques should be mastered only after you have mastered the correct production of a clean voice!

Do you need to develop your hearing to practice pop vocals?

If you have an undeveloped ear for music, you need to develop it regardless of what kind of vocal you are going to do: pop vocals, jazz vocals, folk vocals, academic vocals. We all understand that if we don’t hit the notes, we can’t repeat the melody exactly, then singing won’t work.

If you study vocals for yourself, or want to sing karaoke, then you do not have to take a whole solfeggio course (mastering musical literacy). Simply vocal solfeggio is enough, with the help of which you will develop stable coordination between your hearing and voice.

In the event that you want to engage in pop vocals professionally, you definitely need to master musical literacy and develop an ear for music. Read more about this on the pages Musical literacy and Development of musical ear.

How pop vocal lessons are structured

The main stage of learning pop vocals is mastering vocal breathing (see the article Breathing) and developing the voice (see the article Voice Development). If you want to learn to sing, then you should not skip this very important stage of learning pop vocals. During a pop vocal lesson, a professional vocal teacher will train your breathing and voice. So, the first and main part of the pop vocal lesson is devoted to special vocal exercises that build your breathing and voice. Read more about breathing and voice training on the page Breathing and voice training.

After mastering the fundamental principles of pop singing in our vocal lessons, you begin to learn the repertoire that you would like to sing and which will help you in mastering the technique of pop singing: pop songs of rock, pop and other genres, romances, songs from films and cartoons. It is this repertoire that you will master in pop vocal lessons. Mastering the pop vocal repertoire takes place using backing tracks, as well as live accompaniment.

Working with a microphone in pop vocal lessons

We advise you to start working with a microphone only after you have thoroughly mastered the basic principles of singing: voice production and breathing. If you can sing without a microphone with a strong, bright and free voice without getting tired, then with a microphone it will not be difficult for you to sing at all, because it makes the singing process easier. In our pop vocal lessons you will gain the necessary skills for singing with a microphone, as well as experience recording your vocals in a professional recording studio. Read more about working with a microphone on the page Working in a studio to record vocals.

Performances at concerts

The variety repertoire is very popular among the public. Therefore, our students perform at our concerts dedicated to the performance of pop music. Concert performance is an important stage in learning pop vocals. You will gain irreplaceable experience in public speaking and test your strength and the results of your vocal training.

Vocal Fundamentals

Pop vocals - pop singing combines many song styles and unites the entire palette of vocal art. Pop vocals, first of all, mean singing from the stage, but the concept of pop vocals is usually associated with light and easy-to-understand music. In pop vocals you can hear both folk motifs and elements of jazz, as well as art songs and elements of rock music. Pop vocals differ from academic vocals in that they have a more open and more natural sound. However, singing skills, correct positioning and support*(“*” - see dictionary of terms) sound are just as necessary in pop vocals as in academic ones.

The main difference between pop vocals and academic and folk vocals lies in the goals and objectives of the vocalist. The fact is that academic and folk singers always work within a certain canon or regulated sound, and for them it is not accepted to deviate from the norm. The task of pop vocals is different - to find your own original sound, your own characteristic, easily recognizable manner of behavior, as well as a stage image. Thus, the main specificity of pop vocals is the search and formation of the vocalist’s own unique voice.

This process is in many ways similar to how pop instrumentalists search for “their sound.” Of course, in order to achieve this goal and find your original style of singing, you need to master a fairly wide range of range* technical techniques. So, for example, in pop vocals, unlike folk and classical, intelligible diction*, since words are one of the significant components of any good song.

Also, a feature of pop singing is that in pop songs you can much more often find phrases that are difficult to sing, which require the performer to quickly change breathing.

Pop vocals combine the techniques of academic vocals and folk singing, as well as a number of specific techniques that are characteristic of pop music. Sometimes many who are just beginning to learn the basics of singing technique, unwittingly, and sometimes consciously, try to imitate their favorite pop performers, blindly copying their style of singing. As practice shows, not everyone benefits from this in the future. Everything here is individual: for some, the birth of a beautiful singing voice will be a happy surprise, while for others it will be the result of long and painstaking work.

Amazing Nearby:

Pop vocals can be considered a type of folk vocals: it just popped out of the throat... and so it happened. This is a strong simplification, because any performer needs to work on himself, but the main reliance is still on nature, and not trained skill.

I wouldn’t say that the difference is in who got up first - that’s the opera and vocal slippers. At a music school they can teach you the rudiments of a general vocal culture, but they really begin to teach it at the conservatory, because young men need to go through voice training, and in girls, vocal abilities cannot really be seen until puberty sets in.

First of all, breathing is different. When learning academic vocals, the ability to hold it and release it in strictly measured portions takes quite a lot of time. Exercises in which you need to perform each sound gradually increasing/decreasing the power or abruptly stopping it are a routine, daily thing, like a sports warm-up. You have to breathe with your stomach and slowly pump up your abs (this is not a joke), holding the flow of air with your abdominal muscles, and only then manage the air that reaches your throat with your throat.

In pop singing, the entire load goes to the throat, the abdominal muscles only work by pure chance. Because the air flow takes a different path, the vibrations of the vocal cords resonate differently. The voice not only loses range, which is not a fact, but becomes different, often very flat compared to how it would sound in opera vocals.

As an example, I propose to compare the singing of Marcela Detroit in her famous hit and in the program “Pop Star - to Opera Star”, where she took a short course in operatic vocals and, on the instructions of her mentor, “swung” at “Casta Diva”. Let me immediately say that you cannot “look at the singing of an amateur with a magnifying glass” and compare it with the work of a professional who has at least graduated from a conservatory, and even more so with the magnificent Maria Callas. Let us note the main thing: the voice has become different, sometimes unrecognizable.

Academic singers learn to transition smoothly between registers. This problem has existed for the last two hundred years - with the arrival of performers in opera. With pop singers, most often there is no need to go anywhere, there are no awkward notes or jumps, craftsmen like Agnetha Fältskog are an exception. One of the secrets of ABBA's unfading glory is precisely that many melodies only seem simple, but no one intentionally simplified them, for the sake of the convenience of vocals, they did not put the muse in a Procrustean bed of one register or convenient intervals. Among colleagues in the pop industry, there were many more people who wanted to sing cover versions of ABBA songs than those who were able to make their dreams come true. However, even such an uncompromising stage is far from the physical stress that academic vocalists have to overcome.

ZUBR1961:

Academic and pop vocals have different vocal techniques, different breathing and different work with the resonator, the sound of the body.

In classical vocals there is a high vocal position, the work of the nasopharynx, diaphragm, and support comes first, while in pop vocals the chest resonator and ligaments work (open “throat” sound).

Lyaxandr:

Academic vocals are an earlier form of singing training. At that time there were no microphones, different sound amplifiers, not to mention plywood. Singers wanted their voices to sound clear, powerful, even, strong and loud. So that it can be clearly and clearly heard at the farthest ends of the auditorium. Breathing techniques, various exercises - everything was done for this. This is, of course, good for a pop vocalist, but this is not the main thing in pop music. If in the first case, they seem to try to “fit” the singer into a certain framework, then in the case of pop vocals, the performer strives to reveal these very frameworks. Therefore, he strives to reveal his individuality, to show in his singing something of his own, inherent in him. The artistry of the performance, the manner, is the main thing here. You could say it's something more creative. The main thing here is to reveal the individuality of the artist and find his own style of performance. Show off your vocal strengths. And even if he does not have a singing voice, but due to his individuality in revealing it, he can convey the idea of the song to the listener. Coloring it with your own strokes and intonations. You don't need to have a singing voice here. One can recall, for example, such artists as Leonid Utyosov or Mark Bernes, who, precisely due to their individuality and its disclosure, achieved success in performing pop songs and popularity among listeners. Or, for example, Yuri Antonov, a famous composer, melodist and singer, loved by many. I remember he said something like this: I didn’t learn to sing academically, so as not to “kill my individuality,” I’m writing this from memory. Maybe the words were slightly different, but the meaning was the same. And indeed, Yuri does not have some kind of super strong and powerful voice... But! At the same time, he sings his songs better than anyone else! Feels the song, its melody. In this case, because he is its creator, author. And conveys its idea and its beauty to the listener. In general, academically, it is clean, smooth, powerful... in terms of technique, “as it should be,” let’s say, without any decorations. Pop vocals are when there is more creativity and freedom in performance and fewer “frameworks”. Individuality: your own moves, strokes, colors, decorations and other “tricks”. You can even add that composers, for example, even know which artist to offer which song. So that the performer’s “CHIGK” sounds and plays in it.

To the question: what are the main differences between academic vocals and pop vocals, the director of the “Music School for Adults” Ekaterina Zaboronok answers:

- academic vocals are designed for the acoustic propagation of vocal sound, pop vocals are designed for the propagation of vocal sound using musical technical equipment

- in academic vocals it is not permissible to produce sound in a speech vocal position; in pop music this is a common technique

- the final sound formation in the front part is radically different

- in academic vocals the larynx is predominantly in a low position (the state of a yawn in the neck), in pop vocals a high position of the larynx is acceptable

- strobe bass is practically not used in academic vocals

- clothing aesthetics are different

- in academic vocals the performer perceives his sound in reflection from the resonators, in pop vocals the singer perceives his sound coming out of the speakers.

- in academic vocals, unlike pop vocals, singing in

- academic vocalists usually perform works accompanied by a piano or symphony orchestra, pop vocalists often use a soundtrack in their performances.

- academic vocalists often sing from notes, pop singers learn songs by heart

- academic singing cannot be performed with recorded sound, pop singing allows this technique

Pop vocals are a special type of modern vocal art, which, as is clear even from the name, is directly related to the pop music. At the same time, let’s say that it has many shades, because it combines many styles and trends, creating a rich palette of images.

Choosing your style

Among the songs that relate to pop vocals you can see:

  • Bright jazz compositions.
  • Songs with folk melodies in modern adaptation.
  • Author's songs.
  • Modern chanson.
  • Rock works.

Pop vocal classes require a huge palette of expressive means, bright and interesting, allowing not only to demonstrate all the abilities of a vocalist, but also to present any song in the necessary dramatic performance.

The flexible genre, the basics of which can be learned at school, allows you to demonstrate your voice from the most attractive side. It is no secret that in each new performance the same piece can sound differently, because the framework of pop vocals also accommodates the dramatic talent of the performer.

Voice is the main wealth

And yet, despite any abilities of the performer, the most important value in pop vocals is the voice: sound strength, timbre, range - all this affects the final result. Modern equipment technologies make it possible to use a variety of voice effects, phonograms, backing tracks - all this is an integral part of pop vocals.

Many people believe that pop vocals are the younger brother of academic vocals and are of no value. There are even opinions that this is not vocals at all, but something between yard singing with a guitar and rollicking songs at a wedding. But this is what people say who have never encountered real pop vocals: exercises and chants, classes to improve diction and articulation, development of range - all this is fully applicable to pop vocals.

Training programs and their value

Author's programs, the purpose of which is to teach a person the basics of pop vocals, is the best that can be offered. In fact, the combination of traditional techniques that are known to everyone with the author’s own refraction gives an excellent result. Pop vocals impress with their versatility, abundance of all kinds of elements and, of course, the end result - the performance of the song from the stage.

The studio site invites everyone to practice pop vocals. Our teachers are ready to make your dream come true and teach you the wisdom of pop vocals.
