Cardiff Principality Stadium on July 11, 2017

My daughter and I traveled to Cardiff Principality Stadium in what could only be described as torrential downpour all the way from Derby. The motorway was at standstill as wipers would not work. We arrived at the Jockey Park queued for a bus in the still pouring rain. Bus was steamed up but every one on-board thrilled at the night ahead. We arrived in Cardiff and walked quite a considerable way still in the pouring rain to then join a queue of excited fans all wet through yet still excited.

We queued for about 45 minutes and then the goal was in sight. We were ushered in by security to meet with staff mopping the floors as they were wet through. We climbed the stairs, grabbing a wrist band on our way, to reach our seats. Our clothes were sodden and we had to sit on wet coats as nowhere to put them. Did this damper our spirits not on your life. When the concert began it was everything we dreamed of. The fans were superb and Chris as always the showman. Singing all our favorites and jollying the crowd to join in but asking that all mobiles were switched off during the singing of Charlie Brown. Unbelievable.

Stars came down on our heads, balloons and the supporting act excellent. Can"t wait to go again. Hope it is soon. Both of us went down with the flu upon our return home. Who cares. Would do it all over again hopefully.

Coldplay are a British rock band formed in 1996 by lead vocalist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland at University College London. After they formed under the name Pectoralz, Guy Berryman joined the group as a bassist and they changed their name to Starfish. Will Champion joined as a drummer, backing vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, completing the line-up. Manager Phil Harvey is often considered an unofficial fifth member. The band renamed themselves "Coldplay" in 1998, before recording and releasing three EPs; Safety in 1998, Brothers & Sisters as a single in 1999 and The Blue Room in the same year. The latter was their first release on a major label, after signing to Parlophone. They achieved worldwide fame with the release of the single "Yellow" in 2000, followed by their debut album released in the same year, Parachutes, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The band's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, was released to critical acclaim and won multiple awards, including NME's Album of the Year. They have also come top of the BBC Radio 2 poll of the favorite album of all time. Their next release, X&Y, the best-selling album worldwide in 2005, was met with mostly positive reviews upon its release, though some critics felt that it was inferior to its predecessor. The band's fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, was produced by Brian Eno and released again to largely positive reviews, earning several Grammy nominations and wins at the 51st Grammy Awards. On October 24, 2011, they released their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, which received mixed to positive reviews, topped the charts in over 34 countries, and was the UK's best-selling rock album of 2011.

Great English bands, from The Cure to The Fall, rely on the charisma, drama and internal conflict of their frontman. Coldplay leader Chris Martin, who, among other things, recorded an album about his breakup with Gwyneth Paltrow, does not look like a controversial hero. As a reporter for The Independent put it, he looks more like a man who fixes televisions than a man who throws them out of windows.

Coldplay played Wembley for 4 days - no one is playing that much in London this summer.

For those who like to measure music in numbers: 304 thousand tickets for Coldplay's Wembley performances were sold, which should bring the organizers about £30 million.

At all concerts, Chris Martin raised the British Union Jack, but did not comment in any way on the upcoming referendum, which ended with the decision to leave the UK from the European Union.

The breakup with Gwyneth Paltrow in 2014, in his own words, resulted in a year of prolonged depression for Chris Martin. Which, judging by the album “A Head Full of Dreams,” he overcame.

And this is an equally significant moment for Coldplay - this is the fourth time the group has become the headliner of the Glastonbury festival.

At Glastonbury, Martin also raised a flag - only not a state flag, but a banner with the word "love". And this moment pretty well sums up everything why some people adore him and others hate him.

$227 million - that’s how much Coldplay earned on the “Viva la Vida” tour, the current “A Head Full of Dreams” is clearly not far behind; 80 million records sold worldwide; Coldplay is one of about 10 bands in the world whose success can be measured in old-fashioned, pre-Internet terms. But of course, this is not a band about numbers: Coldplay exudes ordinary, quiet love; for which they are hated by many.

“The greatest truth and main advantage of Coldplay songs is to be the best background for an ordinary, unremarkable, but still respectable human life,” as journalist, chemist and Coldplay fan Ivan Sorokin.

Not every melancholy song finds its ideal expression in a stadium-sized concert, but Coldplay have designed their shows to be perfect. What is a Coldplay show: first of all, these are tens of thousands of not very young, obviously employed and, most likely, family spectators who bought expensive tickets. When they get out of the subway, they are ordinary people over thirty, the kind you can meet at the concerts of Leps (a well-known Coldplay fan) or Denis Matsuev. Age is not the main thing, it is no coincidence that Coldplay are headlining Glastonbury for the fourth time. “It’s not that I was some kind of overly fanatical Coldplay fan, but here I had to give up: the group really incredibly powerfully conveyed the feeling of undivided, endless, universal joy that life is beautiful,” - about the group in the context of an ideal family camping trip The usually picky journalist Alexander Gorbachev attended the concert.

"Adventure of a Lifetime" performed at Glastonbury 2016

The concert lasts 2 hours, the audience with expensive seats begins to bloom and jump already on “Yellow” and “Every Teardtop Is a Waterfall”, the final transformation happens at the final “Amazing Day” and “A Sky Full of Stars”. This is a natural hypnosis session - like Alan Chumak's - and a group session of health-improving gymnastics. Imagine a giant stadium lined with mandalas of all shapes (see the cover of “A Head Full of Dreams”); a real trancer's paradise. Mandalas decorate Chris Martin's clothes, as well as his guitar. “Now don’t jump: sit down. I'm telling you for sure, it will be cool. Sit down for a minute. Now jump!” - Martin conducts the cheering crowd like an instructor in oriental practices.

The Coldplay show is a rave for those over 35: clearly a lot of money and effort has been invested in the production of radio-controlled diode bracelets, tested on the Mylo Xyloto tour. The bracelets are different and play their own complex symphony: parts of different colors are included to place the necessary accents. It has been claimed that the production and programming of these bracelets alone costs the band almost half a million euros per concert; Coldplay denied this amount. Be that as it may, the bracelets are taken away at the exit, and cheap analogues are sold on Alibaba: a piece costs a couple of dollars, you need to buy it in bulk.

Afisha Daily's correspondent attended Coldplay's June concert at Wembley Stadium in London at the invitation of the project - a community of listeners who follow important concerts and festivals in the public with jokey presenters and so-called insiders - subscribers who have earned the right to broadcast from concerts simultaneously with, for example, music journalist Denis Boyarinov or Warner Music Russia representative Vladimir Yurchenko.

"A Sky Full of Stars" live in London

Coldplay played at Wembley Stadium for 3 days in a row, more than 200 thousand people listened to them in London alone, and the same number saw them at Glastonbury. If we take it for granted that Coldplay is an ideal band for mass national psychotherapy, then the timing was chosen extremely correctly: during the London concerts, England was preparing to drop out of Euro 2016, Brexit happened, and the pound fell. The band started their Glastonbury show with Chaplin's monologue from The Great Dictator and ended with a phrase about the collapse of the country. And yet, and yet: the almost million - or whatever - Britons who managed to see them in London, Manchester or Glastonbury probably left the concert a little happier than they were.

In this sense, I would like to write a Coldplay show, no matter how I feel about their flowery pathos, candidates for the State Duma, Russian and Ukrainian Facebook and those who want to ban and condemn something. Let Coldplay, and not Aerosmith, be brought to City Day next year by the Moscow government, let their concert be broadcast on Channel One on Police Day. Let the young people rage at the Outline festival - those who have already experienced too many disappointments need other mandalas and other bracelets.

Coldplay is a rock band from Great Britain, founded in the fall of 1996. Only in 2000, after four years of existence, real global success overtook Coldplay. This happened after the release of the group's second single, Yellow, from the album Parachutes, which topped all the charts in the US and UK.

The members of Coldplay met while studying together at London College. Chris Martin, the band's vocalist, was preparing to become a historian, bassist Guy Berryman planned to become a director, guitarist Jonny Buckland had a serious interest in mathematics and astronomy, and Will Champion planned to devote himself to drum, but anthropology.

Initially, the group performed under the name Starfish, but later, at the suggestion of a friend of Chris Martin named Tim Crompton, the current name of the group was borrowed from a collection of poems by Phillip Horky.

In May 1998, Coldplay released the EP Safety with a circulation of 500 copies, and in December the group was invited to the Fierce Panda label, where the second EP Brothers and Sisters was recorded, released in 1999 with a circulation of 2500 copies. The songs on this album instantly became popular. Then the third mini-album, The Blue Room, was released in an edition of 5,000.

November 1999 marked the beginning of recording the debut album. The first single Shiver managed to get into the British Top 40 singles chart.
The turning point in the history of the group was June 2000. The group successfully attended the Glastonberry festival for the second time, and then released the extremely successful single Yellow, which took 4th place in the British singles chart.

The studio album Parachutes was released in 2000 and immediately reached the top of the charts. After their success in Europe, the group decided to test themselves in the United States and organized a tour starting in Vancouver in the winter of 2001. As a result, Parachutes managed to achieve platinum status twice and win a Grammy award.

Recording of Coldplay's second album began in October 2001, and the release took place in August 2002. A year later, the group received a prize from Rolling Stones magazine as the best group of the year. In the summer of 2005, the band, led by new producer Denton Supple, who replaced Ken Nelson, released their third album, Speed Of Sound.

Less than a year later, 2006 gave Coldplay the inspiration to release their fourth album, Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, which was produced by Markus Dravs and Brian Eno.
Coldplay achieved a very important event: the single Viva la Vida became the first English rock single in the last twenty years to reach number one on the main US charts.

Despite the incredible success of the group in many countries around the world, Chris Martin made a statement that after returning from the tour in support of the album, relations in the group became more complicated, which is why Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends could become the last discography of the group.

Coldplay has been nominated for a Grammy 15 times and has won 8 nominations. These nominations include:

Best Alternative Album by Parachutes in 2002,
- Best Alternative Album A Rush Of Blood To The Head and Best Group Rock Vocal Performance in 2003;
- Record of the Year Clocks in 2004;
- Best Talk remix in 2007;
- Song of the Year Viva La Vida, Best Vocal Group Performance Viva La Vida, and Best Rock Album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends in 2009.
