In the summer of 1978, producer Bernt Mohrle, working at Europasound Studios in Frankfurt am Main, began creating a new music project- Chilly. A group selected according to the black & white principle began work in the studio: a white couple - Ute Weber and Werner Sudhoff, and a pair of black vocalists - Sofia Ejango and Oscar Pearson.

Bernt Moerle had previously had experience working with German rock bands and decided to introduce elements of heavy rock sound into the slightly phlegmatic and sugary sound of the fashionable Munich disco sound.

The very first record showed what exactly was meant: the record For Your Love ( a new version hit by the Yardbirds '64) was sharply different from everything that was offered on the music market (with the possible exception of Eruption) - powerful guitar solos superimposed on a classic 120 bpm disco rhythm, exquisitely written parts of the rhythm section and string instruments, “cosmic” chords of synthesizers, and, most importantly, the strong, original timbre of the vocalists’ voices.

Released as a single, For Your Love, it immediately appeared on the playlists of most German radio stations, and its 11-minute maxi version, For Your Love Suite, entered the German dance charts.

Television recordings have shown that the members of Chilly have a memorable appearance and create from each of their songs original show. By the way, men's vocal parts were recorded by black studio vocalist Brad Howell, and the male half of Chilly only imitated singing during the group's performances. The photo at the bottom of the page shows Brad Howell. Howell became famous 10 years later as " backstage voice» Milli Vanilli. In both Chilly and Milli Vanilli, Howell also acted as a songwriter and arranger, he for a long time was part of the core of Frank Farian’s team (like most of Chilly’s studio musicians), but due to his “unpresentable” appearance he practically did not appear on stage. After Farian's scandalous self-exposure of the Milli Vanilli project, he performed at concerts in the "real" composition of The Real Milly Vanilla.

By the end of 1978, 7 tracks were recorded for the Chilly album “For Your Love”; the songs Dance With Me and Love Love Love immediately sounded in discos in Europe.
It was necessary to consolidate the success - and, almost without interruption, Bernt Mörle's team sat down in the studio again. For the next album, not only compositions by Mörle himself and staff writers working with Europasound Studio were selected, but also Eric Clapton's hits Sunshine Of Your Love and Layla. As a warm-up in the spring of 79, the single Come To L.A was released. / Get Up And Move and then new album Chilly "Come To L.A."

Mörle decided to use the potential of Sofia Eyango, who performed in Chilly mainly as a backing vocalist.

Back in late 1978, under the pseudonym CHERRY LAINE, they recorded the solo single Catch The Cat / Come On And Sing. In 1979, Cherie Lane’s album “I’m Hot” (CBS) was released, on which 10 songs were recorded, including a new version famous hit Mamy Blue. During the year, two more singles were released from this album: The Sea-Fare Folk / Hey-Ho And Up She Rises and Danny's Disco / I'm Hot.

In the fall of 1979, Chilly released a new single, Johnny Loves Jenny/Brain Storming, and then Merle main blow: in December another single appears on radio stations and in record stores: We Are The Popkings - perhaps the most famous song Chilly, who became theirs business card. The popularity of Popkings can be judged by the fact that this song was included in most anthologies of European disco of the 80s.

Popkings literally blew up the discos of Europe - and not surprisingly, when recording this song, many experimental sound engineering tricks were used, in addition, a young specialist in electronic music technology, Michael Cretu, began working with the group. The subsequent album “Showbiz”, consisting of 12 tracks, became one of the most successful German records of 1980. The second single from this album was Come Let's Go.

But it seems that Merle's charges are starting to have problems. Werner Südhof left the group, the remaining members of Chilly met again in the studio only at the end of 1981, within a few months 11 new songs were recorded, which were included in the new album “Secret Lies” (1982); singles released: Simply A Love Song/ Dimention 5 and Secret Lies / Rosi Rice.

Bernt Moerle and Chilly's contractual obligations to Polydor were fulfilled and they recorded four albums over a period of 5 years.

Chilly's last single - Goo, Goo, Eyes / Love On The Rebound was actually recorded by vocalist Ute Weber and went on sale in September 1983; the recording for Hansa was produced by the same Bernt Moerle.

It only remains to add that Cherry Lane recorded two more singles No More Monday / Al Capone (1980) and Jungle Lover Boy (1986).

Year of creation 1978, Germany

(Chilli in translation - spicy, frosty, cool)

biography:

The group "Chilli" was founded in 1978 by producer Brent Moerle, arranger Christian Kolonowitz and singer Brad Howell. Thirty-two-year-old Brent Moerle, at the time of the creation of the team, already had some experience working with such projects, so he clearly knew what he wanted to achieve from new group. The fact is that in the late 70s, a special disco style was very popular in Germany, with its slightly phlegmatic and sweet sound.

Therefore, Brent Merle decided to add some zest to his project, adding a little drive and rock-hardcore. The name of the group was chosen to match the music that it performed - the group “Chilly”. The group "Chilli" was formed as a quartet - two singers and two dancers.

The first line-up of the band included: vocalist Ute Weber, two professional dancers - Werner Südhoff and Oscar Pearson, and a second performer Andrea Linz. However, in fact, the group consisted of 5 people, since studio singer Brad Howell was used to record male vocals.

Group from Germany "Chilli"

For the first test single, the formerly popular composition “For Your Love” was chosen, and as time has shown, Brent Merle made the right decision. Famous words combined with powerful guitar riffs superimposed on a disco part, they created an unprecedented sensation. It was music of a new sound and new quality. The group's debut single instantly gained fame, many popular radio stations willingly played the song on their radio, and its 12-minute dance version "For Your Love Suite" topped the German dance charts.
