Inna Zhelannaya: “Who could be a more severe critic for me than myself? Biography - You are a fairly famous singer. What is glory to you?
Inna Zhelannaya was born on February 20, 1965. Her childhood was spent in the city of Zelenograd, where she studied at a music school and sang in the choir, which was directed by Inna’s mother Alla Iosifovna.
After graduating from school, Zhelannaya entered the Elista Music College, after which she continued her education in Moscow. In parallel with her studies at the vocal department, the singer began to get acquainted with rock music, which inspired her to create her own songs.
In 1985, together with Eduard Vokhmyanin, she organized the Focus ensemble and, after a series of successful concerts, decided to create her own group. Thus, in 1987, the M-Depot team arose.
In 1989, the singer began performing as part of the Alliance group. At the same time, Sergei Starostin introduces Zhelannaya to the rich culture of folklore.
As a result, the Alliance's music was enriched with ethnic motifs, and the group's repertoire was replenished with several successful songs, including two undisputed hits, “Further, Further” and “Up to the Sky.” The album "Made in White", which included these songs, was a great success - French radio ("Radio France International") in 1994 recognized it as the best in the East, and the musicians themselves were invited to Paris to perform at the laureates' concert.
But Zhelannaya did not take part in this event, because two years earlier she left the group due to the birth of a child. However, the Alliance soon ceased to exist, and then some of its former members (Kalachev, Zhuravlev, Kistenev, Starostin) united around Inna. Preparations began for the recording of a new album, which later received the name “Algae”. This disc was released by General Records in 1995. After the song "Only With You" was included in the American world music collection "One World", the group went on a tour of the United States, after which they performed at the opening of the Olympic Games in Atlanta.
In the summer of 1997, the band gave a concert as part of a festival held in the Belgian city of Ghent, and then the musicians moved to Holland and began recording new material at Milan Ciric's studio. Work on the ball's "Foreigner" disc has already been completed in Moscow. The album was subsequently released in the United States. The Shanachie CD covers bore the inscription "Inna And The Farlanders". This move was designed for an English-speaking audience and predetermined the further name of the group.
In October 1999, "Farlanders" (consisting of: Zhelannaya, Starostin, Kalachev, Klevensky, Timofeev) had a performance in one of the Bremen clubs, and in 2000, the company "GreenWave" released the album "Moments", consisting entirely of songs from this club concert. In support of the album, the musicians conducted a large European tour. However, despite the busy schedule of foreign tours, they also find time to participate in the musical life of Moscow.
Inna Zhelannaya is a world-famous star without any exaggeration. She was noticed by musical aesthetes and critics in the late 80s. Then she was the leader of the Alliance group and sang mainly her own songs. And then Inna disappeared from the rotation of domestic music programs for a long time. But she acquired the status of a leading Russian performer of ethnic music abroad. Her group “Farlanders” captivated audiences in America and Europe.
Inna Zhelannaya is a performer of songs in a style for which, as she believes, there is still no exact name. It mixed ancient folk traditions, various musical styles and modern technologies. Sometimes such music is classified as folk, sometimes it is designated by the term world music, but Inna Zhelannaya does not consider either definition to be correct. It turns out that there is no exact name, but there is music, piercing and at the same time very harmonious. The singer prefers the definition “ethno-progressive-nature-trance”.
It all started in 1989, when Inna met with members of the famous group “Alliance”. Both for Inna Zhelannaya and for the Alliance group, which at that time began to somewhat lose its popularity, this meeting turned out to be very significant. The guys from the group seemed to be waiting for her. Not without reason, after listening to Other’s songs, the phrase was heard: “Well, finally!” – and work began in the studio. Inna easily joined the Alliance team, consisting of gifted and advanced musicians. She learned musical subtleties and musical taste from them, giving away her energy and her songs.
But even before meeting the Alliance, there were events and people that influenced her musical taste, consciousness, and creative worldview. The girl, who had dreamed of journalism since her school years, was unable to realize herself in this field, and on the advice of her mother, a teacher at a music school, she entered the faculty of academic singing. And then there was the M-Depo group she assembled in 1987, membership in the Moscow Rock Laboratory, moving to Moscow from Zelenograd. And also - the discovery of the groups “Polite Refusal”, “Auction”, “Kalinovy Most” and the revaluation of musical values, the emergence of a shade of “Russianness” in her work, from which she has not deviated to this day. This shade is already clearly visible in her songs “Sister”, “Only with you”, “Up to the Sky”, “Further”, written before 1992, which are recognized by many music critics and fans as the best.
The first result of cooperation with Alliance was the album “Made in White”. Then there were joint concerts, tours throughout the Union, from Sochi to Baikal, trips with concerts to Paris, Stockholm, a joint project with the Norwegian singer Marie Boine, the first meeting with cinema as a composer: her songs and music were heard in the film “Kix” by Sergei Livneva.
In 1992, Inna’s son Vanya was born and she had to stop touring for 2 years. But in 1994, work began to boil again. There was a trip to Paris, where “Made in White” received the Grand Prix. Concert work has resumed. Two Sergei remained from the Alliance with Inna - Kalachev and Klevensky. Soon their ranks were joined by Sergei Starostin. The General Records studio released Inna Zhelannaya’s album “Algae” in 1995, and in the same year the American company Putumayo World Music included a song from this album “Only with You” in its collection “One World”. In support of the album, Inna and her band went on tour to the USA, where one of the music venues where they performed was the opening stage of the Olympic Games in Atlanta.
In 1997, Inna recorded a new disc in Holland, released in Moscow by GreenWave Records in 1998 under the name “Foreigner,” which consisted mainly of folk songs processed by the group in its own style.
In 1998, there was a trip to Stockholm for the World Musik Exposition festival. “Inna Zhelannaya’s Group” is an absolutely unpronounceable phrase for foreigners, which is why the name “Farlanders” appeared.
After the 10th anniversary concert of the Farlanders group, Inna disbanded her band, and in 2007 she presented a project with a group of new musicians. The albums “Cocoon” (2009) and “Twist” (2014) were highly praised by music critics. As before, the work of Inna Zhelannaya and her group is based on authentic folk material, amazingly intertwined with progressive rock, jazz, trance, electronics and psychedelic elements.
Inna Zhelannaya is one of the few Russian singers known far beyond Russia, the founder of the group Farlanders (1994-2004), which captivated hundreds of thousands of people with its music at the most prestigious festivals of ethnic, jazz, pop and rock music in Germany, Great Britain, France, Spain, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, Austria, Serbia, Slovenia, Poland, Czech Republic, Singapore, Scotland, USA.Inna Zhelannaya's albums were published in Germany and America and won places in international charts, her concerts were broadcast by famous European radio and television companies BBC (UK), ZDF, NDR, WDR (Germany), Radio France International (France), Radio Netherlands (Netherlands ). Enthusiastic articles and reviews were published by the following publications: Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Village Voice (USA), Scotsman, Herald (UK), Frankfurter Rundschau, Frankfurter Algemeine Zeitung (Germany), not to mention many music magazines from different countries peace.
Peter Gabriel, Robert Fripp, Ian Anderson, Joe Boyd (one of the first producers of Pink Floyd and the most authoritative producer of ethnic music) speak with respect about her work. Zhelannaya’s creative biography includes collaborations with such musicians as bassist Trey Gunn (“King Crimson”), Norwegian singer Mari Boine, multi-instrumentalist and singer Sergei Starostin, horn player Arkady Shilkloper.
In February 2007, Zhelannaya announced the start of a new musical project and actually started the story from scratch, pursuing the goal of bringing her music to Russian listeners. Around her, as before, the best musical masters are concentrated, without exaggeration. The current composition Kalachev, Marto, Maryakhin is nothing more than a priceless brilliant cut of the original grain. The concert album “Winter” (CD/DVD), recorded and filmed at the Gorky Moscow Art Theater and released in 2008, became another bar in Zhelannaya’s work, and again she sets it extremely high. Zhelennaya still works with folk material from different regions of Russia, but even professionals no longer undertake to determine the stylistic direction of this music. This is an amazing mixture of electronic, progressive, trance, psychedelic.
On November 14, 2009, Inna Zhelannaya’s solo album “Cocoon” was released, again based on Russian folk songs. Executed with the finest taste and careful attitude to folklore material, the meditative “Cocoon” is already recognized as one of Zhelannaya’s best works.
