Designing the title page of an abstract: what do you need to know? What does the title page look like?

Just as a person is greeted by his clothes, a term paper or essay is greeted by its title page. Looking at an incorrectly or carelessly designed title page, a teacher or supervisor may doubt the quality of the finished work and lower the grade, despite the fact that its content meets all the requirements.

What information should be displayed on it? At the top of the sheet there is a heading: “Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.” One line below is the full name of the educational institution, another line below is the full name of the faculty. The “head” is aligned to the center of the sheet. Stepping back from the top edge by 1/3, indicate the specialty. Below, skipping a line, write the type of report or something else. The type of work is typed in large bold font. If the coursework or test is subject to any option, this is indicated in the line below. In the lower third of the sheet indicate the data of the student and the inspector in Performed by: Gennady Dmitrievich Vlasov, 1st year full-time student, group No. 26. Checked by: David Evgenievich Grishin, professor of the Department of Metallurgy (conditionally). The title page ends with the name of the city and the year the report was written.

In addition to scientific reports and term papers at the institute, it is often necessary to design the first page for a school essay. Of course, the design requirements there are not as strict as in higher educational institutions, but a correctly composed title page attracts the teacher’s attention and helps to create a favorable impression of the work itself. For the first page, always take A 4. The title page is not numbered and does not participate in counting the pages of the abstract. There is no need to decorate it either: no frames, monograms, pictures, stickers, unless this is discussed separately.

How to properly format a title page for an essay? At the top, in the middle of the page, stepping back a centimeter from the edge, write the name of the ministry, and on the line below - the name of the educational institution, for example: municipal educational institution of the city of Dunaisk No. 81. According to the latest requirements, the name of the ministry is not written, since it has been disbanded, but many require it to be indicated in title page the old fashioned way. The name of the work is written in the center of the sheet, for example: “The Silver Age of Russian Poetry.” The name is highlighted in bold letters 16. You should also not highlight it in italics, underlined lines or excessively large letters - this does not enhance the work, but rather, on the contrary, violates the integrity of perception. Under the title of the work, its type and subject are indicated, for example, “Abstract on history” or “Report on literature.” Towards the end of the page, on the right, the student’s data is written, for example: “Completed by: Izmailov V.I., student of the 8th “G” grade of school No. 136. A line below - the teacher’s full name. Instead of teacher data, you can leave an empty line.

There is no need to write down all the titles of the leader in detail: teacher of Russian language, literature and rhetoric and class teacher of 7 “A”, 6 “B” and 8th “G”. The last name and the first letter of the first and middle name will be enough. Later, when the work is accepted, the teacher will sign next to his name. If several students did an essay or report at the same time, the last names with initials and class number are written on the right in a column, one above the other. The same applies to the list of inspectors: if several people will accept the work, their names should be written in a column, for example: “Checked by members of the commission: N.A. Ivanov, S.S. Temerov.”

A general example of a title page is described here. You can ask your supervisor or teacher for more details about the rules for submitting work, since requirements may differ in different educational institutions. In addition, it should be remembered that even a perfectly designed title page will not save poorly prepared work.

The title page is the face of a student's work, which creates the first impression of it. Whether it is good or bad depends on you. For our part, we will tell you in detail and be sure to show you how to write the title page of an essay so as not to lose face in the dirt.

What is the importance of correctly formatting the title page of an essay? If the title page is formatted incorrectly, then the reviewer, most likely without even reading the text of the main part, will send you back for revision.

Of course, all norms and design standards are specified in GOST and the department manual. However, before you start writing the title page of your essay, ask your teacher if he has any personal preferences in design. Suddenly you came across a not particularly accommodating scientific supervisor.

What exactly should be on the title page of the abstract?

Before you correctly write the title page of your abstract, you need to set the margin sizes:

  • right - no less 1.5 cm,
  • left – 3 cm,
  • top and bottom - by 2 cm.

It is worth checking the margin sizes with the teacher, as he may not adhere to state standards and change the requirements.

The title page must contain:

  • name of the university;
  • full name of the department;
  • name of the discipline;
  • topic of scientific work;
  • student data (name, course, group number, form of study);
  • data of the checking teacher;
  • the city where the student studies;
  • year of document release.

Numbering rules and font

Although the numbering begins with the title page, the number “1” is not included, and the same applies to the contents page.

In the document, numbering begins from the introduction page with the number “3”.

As a rule, when writing an abstract, you must use a standard font - Times New Roman and size 14 point.

Stages of creating a title page

To begin, conditionally divide the A4 sheet into 4 parts. These are the top, center, right and bottom, and in each of them it is necessary to adhere to certain requirements.

By the way! For our readers there is now a 10% discount on

First part

In the first part at the top of the page in capital letters in the center we write: MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF THE RF. On the next line we indicate the name of the university and below the name of the department in quotes.

Second part

We place the second part in the center: here we write the word “ABSTRACT” in capital letters, and after it we indicate the discipline and topic.

The third part

The third block needs to be aligned to the right. The details of the student and the examiner are written here. The position of the teacher must be indicated:

Fourth part

And the last, fourth part is placed at the very bottom of the page and aligned to the center. Here we indicate the city and year of publication of the abstract.

If the abstract is due at the end of December, then indicate the next year.

It is important to remember that there is no end anywhere.

You understand that writing the title page of an essay correctly is not a difficult science. However, if you don’t want to go to the trouble of “riveting the title card” yourself, then the student service will do this mechanical work for you. All you have to do is subscribe to our telegram channel to keep abreast of student life and current news.

Title page of course work (other names: cover, title)– this is the first page of the course work, reflecting information about the university, topic of the work, author, supervisor and city of writing. This information is necessary to search and process the document.

For reference. The title page first appeared in the book “Bulla cruticiata” (1463, author Peter Schaeffer), much later in scientific works.

Most questions with the title page arise when preparing coursework. Currently, the title page for research (research work, including coursework) has been standardized in GOSTs, which will be discussed further.

GOST requirements for the design of the title page

To correctly design the title as reference material, you need to use:

Standard requirements include a number of parameters that apply to scientific work “by default.”

List of GOST requirements:

  1. Font: Times New Roman should be used, and the point size is 14.
  2. The line spacing on the title course is single.
  3. Alignment of general information occurs in the center.
  4. The phrase “Course work” is highlighted in 24 font and bold.
  5. Student and teacher information is aligned to the right.
  6. Margins: right margin is 1 cm, top margin is 2 cm, bottom margin is the same as the top margin, left margin is 3 cm.
  7. Indents of 2-3 lines are present between the department and the type of work, between the topic and information about the author, as well as between information about the teacher and the city.

The title page of the course work according to GOST should contain information about: the Ministry of Education and Science; name of the educational institution; faculty; department; type of work; her topic; student (for this, the order is used: full name, course, group); teacher (in the following order: title, then scientific degree, position of the head and his full name); city; year of writing.

It is important to know. In addition to GOST standards, you should carefully study the manual, as in some universities. Design requirements may differ slightly from standard ones ().

Step-by-step instructions for designing a title page

Step 1. We create a “header”: we indicate the Ministry of Education, after a paragraph the full name of the university, and then the faculty and department.

Step 3. The next point is the topic. It appears in 16 point bold font.

Step 4. All written information must be centered.

Step 6. The next point is the city.

Step 7 Below is the year.

Step 8 The city and year are centered and dropped to the very bottom of the title page.

Step 9 The type and size of the font, the correspondence of the fields, and the spacing between lines are checked.

The title page is ready. The final step is to take a sample and see what is visually different.

Title page of term paper10 different universities (examples)

note that all sheets are designed differently. This is not the author's fault. This is a systemic problem for Russian universities. Despite the existence of GOST standards, methodologists often make mistakes when drawing up guidelines for students.

Do I get a grade reduction for an incorrect title page?

The answer is clear - reduce. It all depends on the teacher and the degree of “incorrectness” of the design. Some will scrupulously look for mistakes, others will turn a blind eye to them. Still others simply won't notice them. If nothing catches the eye, the reviewer will not spend long on the title page. So the more responsibly the student approaches the issue, the higher the likelihood that minor shortcomings will escape the watchful eye of the teacher.

TOP 10 mistakes when designing a title page

Error 1. The most common mistake is numbering the title page. When fitting a creation to standard parameters, one should not forget that the “person” of the work has the exclusive right not to be numbered.

Error 2. Oddly enough, a common mistake is the wrong year. Rarely do students create a title page for their coursework from scratch. More often, they ask senior students for last year’s. And one small number always escapes attention.

Error 3. The third mistake is not entirely related to design. To avoid an awkward situation, you should triple check all the information about yourself and, especially, about your supervisor. A mistake in the last name or “underestimation” of the teacher’s scientific degree can spoil the overall impression worse than all the design flaws.

Error 4. Periods at the end of phrases. Please note that they are not there.

Error 5. The name of the educational institution is not written in full.

Error 6. Don't forget about the location. City and year are on the bottom two lines.

Error 7. The next error is incorrect fields.

Error 8. It is necessary to remember to highlight the topic of the course work in bold.

Error 9. Failure to highlight the type and topic of the work in a larger font size.

Error 10. It should not be overlooked that the paragraph indentation from the left edge should not be present on the title page.

Attention. Before printing the title page, it is recommended to check and eliminate the most common errors in it.

Below is a ready-made template for the title page of the term paper, designed in accordance with all GOST standards.

The correct sample of the coursework title page for 2018-2019.

Let's sum it up

Creating a title page for a term paper is a very important, but not at all labor-intensive process. Looking at the sample and using the step-by-step instructions, any student can easily create a title page taking into account all the requirements of GOSTs.

P.S. The title page is never numbered, but is taken into account when numbering and is the first page of the work (the title is also not indicated in the table of contents).

The first page of the document has its own unique design, which every student must adhere to. After all, the title page of the abstract is the face of all the work done and it creates the first impression (negative or positive) on the examiner. If the first page is formatted incorrectly, then the reviewer, without even reading the text, will send the document for revision.

The title page of the abstract is drawn up according to two main state standards:

  1. GOST 7.32-2001 – “Report on research work”. This applies to research work, which is an abstract. In this section, all the necessary requirements are well described and students must adhere to them when preparing the main page of the work. That is, what exactly should be on the title.
  2. GOST 2.105-95 - as a rule, they say ESKD, but the entire document is called: “Unified system of design documentation”. This state standard is valid not only in Russia, but also in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine. Here are the general requirements for any text documents. That is, the student will read what the title page format should be, how to write the name of the university, student and teacher information, etc.

Teachers at some universities are not guided by GOSTs, but create guidelines based on GOSTs, which spell out the requirements for the entire abstract, including the first page of the abstract.

Still, according to GOSTs it is easier to prepare documents, since even if students did something incorrectly according to the manual, the teacher will not be able to object, since the student adhered to state standards.

Rules for the design of the title page

Despite the fact that university teachers create manuals with their own requirements, there are certain rules that must be followed in any case. Before creating the title page of the abstract, you need to set the margin sizes: right - at least 1.5 cm, left - 3 cm, and top and bottom 2 cm, respectively.

However, it is better to learn these nuances at the department, since the teacher can change the requirements and deviate from state standards.

The title page of the main page of the document for each student should contain the following data:

  • Country name (not always);
  • full or abbreviated name of the department. The reviewer should be consulted about this;
  • name of the discipline;
  • topic of scientific work;
  • data of the student (the author who wrote the work). All data must be indicated in full, that is, full name, course or group number;
  • author's training form. A student can study full-time, part-time or evening;
  • reviewer data, that is, position (required) and full last name, first name, patronymic;
  • the city where the student studies;
  • year of document release.

You should also remember that the abstract must be numbered from the first page, but the page number is not indicated on the title page.

It is worth noting that not a single GOST regulates the font, that is, the type and size are not specified. As a rule, teachers themselves say which font to use, usually Times New Roman, font size 14. Therefore, before you start writing your work, you need to consult your reviewer, who will be accepting the work, about this.

Procedure for preparing the title page of an abstract

Don't know how to format the title page of your essay? If the teacher has not indicated his requirements, then the student can independently draw up the document according to GOST.

To begin with, you can conditionally divide the A4 sheet into 4 parts. These are the top, center, right and bottom, and in each of them adhere to certain requirements.

In the first upper part in capital letters in the center it is written: MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF THE RF. On the next line is written the name of the university and below the name of the department in quotation marks. We present an example for clarity:

The second part is located in the center of the A4 sheet. Here the word “ABSTRACT” is written only in capital letters, and after it the subject and topic of the scientific work is indicated. For example:

The third block should be aligned to the right, where the data of the students (group, full name) and the inspector (position and full name) are written. The position of the teacher must be indicated:

And the last, fourth block, although small, is no less important. It is placed at the very bottom of the page and must be centered. Here you can indicate the city in which the university is located and the year the scientific work was published. It is worth remembering: if the essay is due at the end of December, then you need to indicate the next year. The example shows that only the name of the city and the year are written. It is very important to note that the period is not placed anywhere.

Of course, title pages often differ from each other. It all depends on the specific university and its requirements. Some teachers ask that the design of the title page of the essay comply with all GOST standards, while others want to see work written exclusively according to the manual.

The title page of an essay is completed quickly and easily if the student knows all the necessary rules. Here the requirements are minimal, but it is very important to correctly indicate the details of not only the university or department, but also the teacher.

The article looked at how to correctly format the title page of an abstract in accordance with all GOST standards. When writing a paper, it is very important to consider the design of the first page. However, we should not forget that universities often deviate at least a little from GOST, so it is better to still consult with your reviewer and then start writing an essay.

How to format the title page of an essay correctly? updated: February 15, 2019 by: Scientific Articles.Ru

It happens that a student brings the teacher a wonderful, deep essay that perfectly covers the topic, but the teacher rejects the work due to incorrect formatting. It is especially offensive to receive such a surprise just before a test or exam, which is not allowed without a valid essay. So the design of the abstract is not a small thing.

However, there is nothing complicated in the rules for writing an abstract. Problems usually arise among first-year students who simply do not yet know how to properly format an essay (because they were too lazy to find out before submitting it). But this article will help those who did not take the teaching manual from the department and thought about formatting it the night before handing in the work - you must agree, this is a common situation!

Sometimes beginners-students fail to properly format an abstract. Having decided to earn extra money, a novice student writer believes that it is enough to simply write a paper, and is very upset when the customer, with a scandal, demands modifications: the design is not according to the standard. So, it seems to us, this article will also be useful for student planners.

General rules for writing abstracts

There are several types of essays, but in this case we mean the format of educational work. This is a work that can be called a smaller, simpler version of the coursework. Therefore, educational abstracts are prepared in generally the same way as coursework and diplomas.

In many universities, and even more so in schools, the preparation of abstracts is less strict, allowing slight deviations from the strict GOST standard. Some faculties have their own rules regarding the design of work, especially title pages (so, in addition to studying the general rules described below, we recommend that you still take a manual from the department; sometimes teachers invent special requirements precisely in order to check whether you have read this manual or not?).

But in general, it is enough to follow the basic rules regarding the choice of font, footnotes, numbering, formatting of contents, bibliography, and title page.

It is best if you study the rules for formatting an abstract according to GOST, which correspond to the standards for formatting more serious research papers. Even if the teacher is not a picky person, these skills will not be superfluous. And if you come across a “bureaucrat” from ours, then the design of the abstract according to GOST will be more important than the content!

How to format an abstract correctly?

  1. Use Times New Roman font. This is not stated in GOST, but the practice is already established.
  1. Traditionally, 14-point font is used, sometimes 12-point font. It is better to clarify this point with the teacher. As a rule, 14th font is chosen for academic work, but if the volume of the essay is large, it makes sense to choose a slightly smaller font size. But a larger one is not allowed, since the teacher will immediately understand that you are visually inflating the volume.
  1. Line spacing is one and a half. A larger interval, again, indicates an attempt to cheat with volume.
  1. Sheet orientation is portrait. Landscape is sometimes allowed when designing applications (for example, wide tables).
  1. Margins: 1.5 cm for the top, 3 cm for the bottom, 1.5 cm for the right and 2.5 cm for the left (1 cm is a margin for filing sheets). Increasing margins is sometimes used by students to increase the number of sheets, but this practice can lead to trouble, especially if you get really bold and set the settings to 3 - 3 - 3 - 4.
  1. Sheets A4 shape, density – standard for printing by printer, color white.
  1. The text is printed on only one side of the sheet. The back should remain clean. By the way, this is a common mistake among beginners, who often write on both sides, as if in a notebook.
  1. Numbering (Arabic numerals) is added from the third sheet (from the introduction). The 1st and 2nd sheets (title and contents), according to GOST, are not numbered, but are taken into account in the calculation. Simply put, on the first two sheets there are no numbers at the bottom, on the sheet with the introduction there are already “3”. Applications are not numbered.
  1. The title page consists of the following parts:

— A cap with the full name of the educational institution (university, college, school, etc.), the name of the faculty and department, as well as the phrase “Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation” (it is sometimes excluded when preparing the title page of the abstract). Formatting - centered.

— The inscription “ABSTRACT” with the title of the work and an indication of the discipline. Centered formatting. Sometimes the name is indicated simply, without quotes, sometimes it fits into the formula... on the topic “Ν”...(the same with the indication of the discipline; check with the department for specific requirements). Formatting is centered, positioned approximately in the middle of the sheet (or slightly higher).

— Information about the author (full name, course, sometimes group or department) and scientific supervisor (full name, position, scientific degree - either in the format “D.H.S.”, “Ph.D.,” or expanded, please specify in the manual). This block is located 7–9 intervals lower than the previous one. Please note that the block is located on the right, but the first letters of the lines are lined up - you can achieve this arrangement using the Tab key.

— The final block with information about the city in which the educational institution is located and the year the work was written. Located at the very bottom of the sheet, formatted in the center.

The main font size for the title page is 14, but the word “ABSTRACT” and the title of the topic are usually typed in a larger size.

Sample title page for an abstract:

  1. The content is located on the 2nd sheet and includes the names of all parts (introduction, chapters and paragraphs of the main part, conclusion, bibliography (sometimes highlighting the list of sources), appendices).

For each element, except applications, a page number is indicated. Applications are not numbered, since they can be not only sheets, but also folders with materials, disks, etc.

At the top of the sheet is written: “CONTENTS” (without quotes, in upper case). The following is information about work items with left-aligned formatting, but the pages are listed opposite, with left-aligned formatting (use the TAB key).

Sample content design:

  1. The introduction begins. As a rule, all educational essays contain this part, similar to coursework and diplomas.
  1. The main part of the abstract is divided (with rare exceptions) into chapters. Sometimes paragraphs (or points) are highlighted within chapters.
  1. Chapters begin on a new leaf. Sometimes paragraphs begin on a new sheet of paper (check this point in the manual).

An unspoken rule: the final part of the chapter should take up at least a quarter of the page. For cunning students who inflate the volume, the ends of chapters “hang” in a few lines on an almost blank sheet of paper, which causes great irritation among teachers: they feel that they, how to put it this way... are considered fools.

  1. The conclusion also begins on a separate sheet.
  1. The headings of the structural elements of the abstract (introduction, conclusion, list of references, titles of chapters) are formatted uniformly. Formatting - centered. Usually in upper case. Additional use of bold (fat) is possible.

It is not allowed to format the name of one element in upper case and another in lower case.

Exception: Paragraphs and clauses, if they do not begin on separate sheets, can be formatted in lower case and bold when chapter titles are formatted in upper case. In this case, they are considered an integral part of the chapters. It is better to clarify this nuance with the teacher.

  1. The titles of chapters, paragraphs, paragraphs and other elements of the work are written WITHOUT QUOTATIONS.
  1. Attention! After the chapter titles, the words “Introduction”, “Conclusion”, “Appendix” and the phrase “Bibliography” THERE IS NO PERIOD! NOT PUT!!! NOT PUT!!! A very common mistake. Drives teachers to hysterics
  1. The list of references is drawn up on a separate sheet. In abstracts, the number of materials used is small, so groups in the list of references, as a rule, are not highlighted (however, this depends on the requirements of the department and the supervisor). But if the list of references contains sources, and not just scientific research, the identification of groups is necessary. This is relevant for historians, lawyers, philosophers and several other specialties.
  1. The bibliography is arranged alphabetically. Works in foreign languages, if any, educational works usually follow after Russian ones.
  1. Preparation of the list of used literature is in accordance with GOST, that is, in accordance with the rules of bibliographic design of sources.

Two design options are allowed: with and without a dash between the areas of the bibliographic description. The number of pages in a work may be omitted.

Sample bibliography format:

Ivanov I. I. Intergalactic hyperdrives. – M.: Polytech, 2010. – 421 p.

Ivanov I. I. Intergalactic hyperdrives. M.: Polytech, 2010.

Attention: initials are separated from each other not only by periods, but also by spaces.

  1. Links are an optional requirement. Some abstracts (for example, school ones) are written without references. If links are needed, they are formatted according to standard rules. Usually - on a separate sheet, after the list of references. Sometimes - page by page (in this case, continuous numbering of links is recommended). How to create links - at the end of the work or page by page, check with your teacher.

Ivanov I. I. Intergalactic hyperdrives. M.: Polytech, 2010. pp. 35 – 37.

If you cite the same source twice or more times, the following formula is used:

Ivanov I.I. Decree. op. pp. 35 – 37.

If you refer to this source twice or several times in a row, it is simply written:

  1. The application exits. Its pages are not numbered. If there are several applications, they are numbered in Latin numerals: I, II, III, etc.
  1. The sheets of the finished abstract are fastened with a spiral or punched with a hole punch and placed in a folder with a transparent top sheet.
