A reminder for those wishing to receive the sacrament of holy baptism. Memo for godparents, baptized people and their parents Memo for godparents

Memo for godparents, those being baptized and their parents

1. Basic prayers of Christians

Lord's Prayer

Our Father, Who art in Heaven! Hallowed be Thy, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, I am in Heaven and on earth. Wait for us today for our daily bread, and leave it to us until we owe it to our skin and we leave it to our debtor; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the bow.

Prayer of the last Optina elders

Lord, let me meet with peace of mind everything that the coming day will bring me. Let me completely surrender to Your holy will. For every hour of this day, instruct and support me in everything. Whatever news I receive during the day, teach me to accept it with a calm soul and a firm conviction that everything is Your holy will. In all my words and deeds, guide my thoughts and feelings. In all unforeseen cases, do not let me forget that everything was sent down by You. Teach me to act directly and wisely with each member of my family, without confusing or upsetting anyone. Lord, give me strength to endure the fatigue of the coming day and all the events during the day. Guide my will and teach me to pray, believe, hope, endure, forgive and love. Ami=ny.

2. Recipients at the Sacrament of Baptism (godparents)

A). General information about godparents
Since ancient times, the Orthodox Church has had a custom, dating back to apostolic times, of having recipients at Baptism. On the day of the Sacrament of Baptism, the godparent or godparent undertakes before God to take care of the upbringing of the godson (or goddaughter) in faith in Christ, to teach pious life, hard work, meekness, abstinence and love. In the Sacrament of Baptism, a relationship of spiritual kinship is established between the recipient and the godson. According to church rule, only one recipient is considered necessary: a man for a male person to be baptized or a woman for a female person. However, over the past centuries, the custom of having two recipients at Baptism, which continues to this day, has become widespread: the godfather and the godmother.

B). Choice of godparents
When choosing godparents for their children, parents must make sure that the future godfather is truly an Orthodox Christian, living according to the commandments of Christ in communion with the Orthodox Church, and will be able to fulfill the duties of a godfather (which are discussed below). Receivers cannot be non-believers, unbaptized, people of other faiths, ignorant of Orthodoxy, minors and the mentally ill. It is unacceptable for parents to be the successor of their own children or for a husband to be the successor of his wife (or vice versa). Church rules do not prohibit siblings, a father and his daughter, or a mother and her son from being godparents of the same baby if they are from a different family than the one being baptized. It is perfectly acceptable to be a godfather to a grandparent, uncle or aunt, cousin, etc.

G). Participation of godparents in Baptism
When infants are baptized, the recipients hold their godchildren in their arms throughout the entire rite of the sacrament of Baptism. If there are two recipients, then the boy can be held by the godmother, and the girl by the godfather until she is immersed in the font. After being immersed in the font three times, the baby is handed over to a receiver of the same gender as the baby. Being guarantors for their godson, they make vows to God for him:

1st vow- this is a renunciation of the devil and all his works, a promise not to sin, not to follow the suggestions of the enemy of the human race, not to resist the will of God, but to fulfill it in everything;

2nd vow- a promise to believe in Christ and thus be united to Him. To witness this, the godfather reads the “Creed” (see below), which every Orthodox Christian, including godparents, should know by heart.

D). Responsibilities of godparents
The name of a Christian obliges us to always have Christ in our thoughts and hearts, to always have His spirit in our entire lives, imitating His life, fulfilling His Holy Commandments. And from this day on, we also took upon ourselves the responsibility, to the best of our ability, to engage in the Orthodox education of our godson (or goddaughter) until he reaches adulthood and to pray for him all his life.

Godparents must teach spiritual knowledge to their godchildren: explain to him the basics of the Orthodox faith, take him to Communion, take care of his moral and spiritual condition, pray together and attend divine services, participate with him in the Holy Sacraments of the Church, study the Holy Scriptures in the spirit of the Orthodox patristic tradition, by your own example to help him establish himself in faith, piety, deeds of goodness and love.

Godparents should pray for the confirmation of their godson or goddaughter in the faith, they can give good advice to godchildren, give them icons and spiritual books, bless them for marriage, reinforcing the authority of their parents.

Godparents must remember that on the day of the Last Judgment they will give God an answer about those received from the baptismal font.

Therefore, while confirming in the face of the Orthodox Church our faith in the Orthodox teaching on the salvation of the soul, we are also obliged to replenish our spiritual knowledge:

· Study the Holy Gospel and other books of the New Testament, and their Orthodox interpretation.

· Spend your life in communion with the Orthodox Church and its Holy Sacraments.

· Always remember that “Just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead” (James 2:26).

If we ourselves live as Christians, then our godson(s), listening to us and seeing our deeds, will certainly be drawn to the Light of Christ, and it will be bitter for us if we do things contrary to the Commandments of Christ, thereby distorting them in the eyes of the godson. (tsy) your illustrious title of mentor.

There is no need to be afraid of people who intend to become recipients, but do not fully meet the requirements mentioned above. It is never too late to engage in spiritual self-education, especially if this is done not only for yourself, but also for the sake of another person. Currently, there are many books, magazines, as well as Orthodox Internet sites that present the basics of Orthodoxy in an accessible form. If you have any perplexed questions, you should seek advice from a priest.

3. Preparation for the Sacraments of Repentance and Communion

A). A few days before Communion we begin to fast (fast). We fast from 3 days to a week (as our confessor blesses us). The post implies restrictions:

· in food - we do not eat meat (food of animal origin);

· bodily - marital abstinence;

· spiritual - less entertainment, let's protect ourselves from empty pastime. We read morning and evening prayers.

B). We read the canons (we start 1-3 days in advance, finish on the eve of Communion) from the prayer book:

· "Canon of repentance to the Lord Jesus Christ"

· "Canon of Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos"

· "Canon to the Guardian Angel."

IN). On the eve of Communion:

· We make peace with everyone.

· On a piece of paper we write down all our sins that have not yet been confessed (for memory).

· If there is an evening service (it almost always happens on Saturday), then you need to attend it and confess your recorded sins there, as well as any others you remember. If there is no evening service the day before, then we confess our sins at the morning service on the day of Communion.

· At home we read the beginning of “Following to Holy Communion” up to the verse “Before the Communion of the Terrible Sacrifice, the Life-Giving Body of the Lord...».

· After 12 o'clock at night: we do not eat or drink, and we must abstain from smoking.

G). On the morning of Communion:

· We read the morning prayers and the end of “Following to Holy Communion” (from the verse “Before the Communion of the Terrible Sacrifice, the Life-Giving Body of the Lord...»).

· We come to church at the beginning of the service (or confession, if it starts earlier), having a cross on us.

· We must be present at the entire service and confess (if we were not at Confession the night before). During Confession, we take a blessing from the priest for Communion.

· At the end of the Liturgy, after singing “Our Father...”, we come closer to the altar, folding our right over left hands on our chest. When the priest comes out with the Holy Chalice, we repeat the prayers after him. Next, with fear and trembling, we approach Holy Communion (help us, Lord). Then we go and drink some warmth.

· After Communion, we try to maintain a reverent attitude towards the received shrine, holiness in deeds and thoughts.

D). If you plan to undergo unction, it is necessary before or after the sacrament
Unction to confess and partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ.

Notes .

1). In our church, Liturgy and Communion are celebrated almost every day. Children under 7 years old can receive communion without confession and fasting, and if they are already 3 years old, then on an empty stomach.

2). Don’t forget to give communion to your children, grandchildren and godchildren more often.

3). During Great Lent, Communion is usually celebrated: on Wednesday and Friday - for everyone except for children under 7 years of age (i.e. infants); on Saturday and Sunday - for everyone.

4). Be sure to check the day and time of the Liturgy according to the schedule, as changes are possible.

6. Sacrament of Penance

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Gospel of Matthew, chapter 4, verse 17).

Orthodox Christians of all times cleanse their souls from sin by passing through the special Sacrament of Repentance, established by Jesus Christ himself.

To cleanse the soul in the Sacrament of Repentance it is necessary:

1) Awareness of one's sins and contrition of heart (awareness alone is not enough).

2) Identifying the root causes of your sins.

3) Sincere confession to the priest as the successor of God, with the intention of not sinning again. Only the priest is given the power from God to forgive sins.

Repentant confession helps to begin Holy Communion - to worthily accept the Body and Blood of Christ. Union with Christ brings indescribable peace to the soul, love and reconciliation with everyone. Thus, from time immemorial, the Church of Christ formed the spiritual structure of pious generations, peace, patience, and health.

In order to cleanse the body of dirt, we use water and soap. Corporal uncleanness is hard on us. In order to cleanse the soul of spiritual dirt, that is, to free it from the heaviness and remorse that arise as a result of committed sins (wrong life), the Church offers the SACREMENT OF REPENTANCE. This is the spiritual bathhouse of our spiritual impurity.

The priest is given the power from God to “bind and solve our sins.” “I forgive and absolve your sins...” says the priest to those who come to confession and repent of their sins. Great relief is received by everyone who is honored to wash away their sins in the Sacrament of Repentance and clear their conscience. How one must hurry to cleanse the soul of sin, for no one knows what is in store for him tomorrow and how much earthly journey remains. Will we have time to cleanse ourselves through repentance? Will we have time to realize our sinfulness? Hurry up, Christian. Remember that nothing unclean enters the Kingdom of Heaven.

Approaching confession with faith and hope, check yourself, Christian:

Have you sinned through lack of faith and despondency?

Have you sinned by unworthy Communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ, approaching them without preparation, without contrition, without the fear of God? Forgetting that Holy Communion is a fire that burns our sins. Forgetting that in the Sacrament of Communion we unite with the Lord Himself, who invisibly descended from heaven and transformed bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.

Don't commit the sin of killing your child! Abortion is murder!

Doctors say death is a likely outcome for a woman who has an abortion.

Abortion, in addition, will definitely affect the health of subsequent children. But most importantly, killing an unborn child is a mortal sin, for which parents will be held accountable before God. Therefore, do not be surprised if after termination of pregnancy the family breaks up, a serious illness begins, or another misfortune occurs. Do not be surprised. These are the consequences of infanticide. Material well-being cannot be built on blood. Abortion is always a false step. And if you made this mistake, then repent of it.

Fear God!

The sin of infanticide deprives parents of the grace of God.

In ancient times, for such an act, the mother was excommunicated from the Church for 20 years, along with murderers. Since an unborn person, like an adult, has his own immortal soul, then after death there will be a meeting between parents and the souls of the children they killed.

Beware of "healers"

Beware of “healers”, astrologers, psychics, hypnotists, people involved in removing “damage and the evil eye”, witchcraft, fortune telling, yoga, white and black magic, witchcraft, psychotherapy, auto-training, dianetics, etc. - turning to them for help leads to in-depth communication with fallen spirits (demons), making you guilty of the mortal sin of direct communication with invisible demons.

True healing and insight are the lot of saints and righteous people and are given only to Orthodox ascetics in the feat of humility, fasting, prayer, these are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and only the will of God determines the receipt of such gifts. The cause of all diseases is our sins. Live with God according to His commandments in the bosom of His only Church - the Orthodox Church, participate in the Sacraments of the Church. Healing from sin is healing of the soul, which also contributes to healing from illness.

What is coding?

It operates almost flawlessly and does not require any effort of will on the part of the person being coded. So what is his disagreement with Orthodoxy?

A person gets rid of one or another vice for a certain time under the influence of the psychological influence of a “doctor.” All this can be defined by the concept of fear. As a result, after the set period, the encoded person again becomes susceptible to the previous vice or passions and, thus, does not get rid of the addiction and more often falls into a more severe addiction (which is also fueled by the influence of fallen evil forces - demons).

In a Christian way, a person must himself realize his vice, and direct his free will to correct it, and first of all, internally struggle with sin. In this struggle we cannot do without God’s gracious help.

Man is prone to sin. And if we abstain in word and deed, then it is impossible for us to abstain in thought without God’s help. The depths of mental mud are bottomless. It is mental impurity that pushes us to bad deeds and words. Our thoughts are completely open to the Lord, the saints and the angels. If we do not learn to think purely here on earth, then in heaven our uncleanness will be revealed to everyone.

We constantly condemn, forgetting that the creative court will be held accountable for its deeds with the same degree of severity. Condemning your neighbor “behind your eyes”, do you have the courage to express your dissatisfaction “to your face” and denounce? Will you be right? Do you have the strength to withstand such a test for which you have been condemned? Don't you take other people's sins upon yourself? Remember, condemner, the Lord will ask the same from both. From one he will be asked for the sin committed, and from the other - for the impudence of the assumed powers of the court. If you dare to judge, you only see how your neighbor falls in sin. But you don’t see how his heart cries and laments in repentance.

The doors of repentance are open to everyone, but will we have time to pass through them? It is most difficult for a proud person to realize his impurity. Such people do not see their sin and remain in constant self-delusion and exaltation of the mind. They are satisfied with themselves and rarely look into the depths of their conscience. But conscience is difficult to deceive. This is the voice of God Himself, convicting us.

Every living being is given free will. How will we manage it? Will our actions and intentions bring us closer to God? Our good Deeds - did we do them with a pure heart and love? The Lord always sees your heart, Christian. What is there - humility or proud exaltation, patience or irritation?

Are our actions pleasing to God? No one knows. Nobody knows what the final answer will be. No one knows which angel will come for us to lead us to the Supreme Court. Will there be white or black wings behind his back?

Remember, Christian: the thief who hung next to Christ on the cross repented with humility and entered heaven after the Lord. The Lord forgave and accepted him. Judas Iscariot was a disciple of Christ, but he betrayed his teacher and, without repenting, went to hell out of his pride. God works in mysterious ways.

Believe, Christian, the Lord strengthens everyone who comes to Him with repentance. The Lord helps us to resist sin and not repeat it.

Before Confession and Communion, it is necessary to forgive all those who offend and hate us. And only then can we ask the Lord for forgiveness of our sins.

8. About the responsibilities of husband and wife

The Apostle Paul says about the relationship between husband and wife: “ Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord, because the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the Church. But just as the Church submits to Christ, so do wives to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her... So let each of you love his wife as himself; and the wife is afraid of her husband"(Eph. 5, 22-33).

But the word “afraid” must be understood not in the everyday sense of slavish fear, but in the religious sense, that is, fear of offending, causing trouble, or not doing something. God divided the activities of husband and wife: he entrusted the management of the house to the wife, and left all civil affairs to the husbands. It is very important that each person fulfills his duties first, and does not demand this from the other first. This serves as the basis for peace and harmony in the family.

Interpretation of the Creed

A detailed interpretation of the Creed is given in the catechisms.

The Creed consists of twelve members (parts). Each of them contains the truth of the Orthodox faith.

I believe in one God the Father: I believe that God contains everything in His power and controls everything, that He created heaven and earth, the visible and invisible world. With these words we are saying that we are sure that God exists, that He is one and there is no other besides Him, that everything that exists (both in the visible physical world and in the invisible, spiritual), that is, all the vast universe was created by God. And we accept this faith with all our hearts. Faith is confidence in the real existence of God and trust in Him.

God is one, but not lonely, because God is one in essence, but trinity in Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit - the Trinity is consubstantial and indivisible. The unity of three persons who endlessly love each other.

2 And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only Begotten, Who was born of the Father before all ages, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not created, consubstantial with the Father, and by Him all things were.

2 And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one being with the Father, through whom all things were created.

I believe that our Lord Jesus Christ is the same One and Only God, the second Person of the Holy Trinity. He is the Only Begotten Son of God the Father, born before the beginning of time, that is, when there was no time yet. He, like Light from Light, is also inseparable from the sun. He is the True God, born of the True God. He was born, and not at all created by God the Father, that is, He is one being with the Father, Consubstantial with Him.

I believe that for the salvation of our human race, He appeared on earth, became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became human, that is, took not only the body, but also the human soul and became a perfect man, without ceasing at the same time to be God. Became a God-man.

The Holy Orthodox Church calls the Virgin Mary the Mother of God and honors Her above all created beings, not only people, but also angels, since she is the Mother of the Lord Himself.

I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ during the time of the Roman ruler of Judea - Pontius Pilate - was crucified on the cross for us people, that is, for our sins and for our salvation, because He Himself was sinless. At the same time, He really suffered, died and was buried.

The Savior suffered, of course, not as Divinity, which does not suffer, but as humanity; He suffered not for His sins, which He did not have, but for the sins of the entire human race.

I believe that He rose again on the third day after His death, as foretold in Scripture. The Lord Jesus Christ truly died for us - as the True Immortal God, and therefore He rose again!

Since in the writings of the prophets of the Old Testament it was clearly predicted about the suffering, death, burial of the Savior and His resurrection, that is why it is said: “according to the scriptures.” The words “according to the scriptures” refer not only to the fifth, but also to the fourth member of the Creed.

Jesus Christ died on Good Friday at about three o'clock in the afternoon, and rose again after midnight on Saturday on the first day of the week, called from that time "Sunday". But in those days, even part of a day was taken as a whole day, which is why it is said that He was in the tomb for three days.

6 And ascended into heaven and sat on the right hand Father.

6 And ascended into heaven and sat on the right hand Father.

I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, on the fortieth day after His Resurrection, ascended into heaven with His most pure flesh and sat down at the right hand (on the right side) of God the Father.

The Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven with His humanity (flesh and soul), and with His Divinity He always remained with the Father.

" Who sits at the right hand of the Father" means: on the right side, in the first place, in glory. These words express that the human soul and body of Jesus Christ received the same glory that Christ has according to His Divinity.

By His ascension, our Lord Jesus Christ united the earthly with the heavenly and glorified our human nature, exalting it to the throne of God; and showed us that our fatherland is in heaven, in the Kingdom of God, which is now open to all who truly believe in Him.

I believe that Jesus Christ will come to earth again to judge all people, both living and dead, who will then be resurrected; and that after this Last Judgment the Kingdom of Christ will come, which will never end.

This judgment is called terrible because the conscience of every person will open before everyone, and not only the good and evil deeds that someone has done throughout his life on earth will be revealed, but also all the words spoken, secret desires and thoughts.

According to this judgment, the righteous will go into eternal life, and the sinners into eternal torment - because they did evil deeds, which they did not repent of and which they did not atone for with good deeds and correction of life.

Who proceeds from the Father - Who proceeds from the Father; Who is worshiped and glorified with the Father and the Son - Who should be worshiped and Who should be glorified equally with the Father and the Son. The prophets spoke - the one who spoke through the prophets.

I believe that the third Person of the Holy Trinity is the Holy Spirit, as true the Lord God as the Father and the Son. I believe that the Holy Spirit is the Life-Giving Spirit, He, together with God the Father and God the Son, gives life to everything, especially spiritual life to people. He is the same Creator of the world, along with the Father and the Son, and He should also be worshiped and glorified. I also believe that the Holy Spirit spoke through the prophets and apostles and through His inspiration all the holy books were written.

The Holy Spirit revealed itself to people in a visible way: at the baptism of the Lord in the form of a dove, and on the day of Pentecost He descended on the apostles in the form of tongues of fire.

I believe in one, Holy, Catholic Church (in which all believers participate), founded by the apostles.

Here we are talking about the Church of Christ, which Jesus Christ founded on earth for the sanctification of sinful people and their reunification with God. The Church is the totality of all Orthodox Christians, living and dead, united by the faith and love of Christ, the hierarchy and the holy sacraments.

Each individual Orthodox Christian is called a member, or part of the Church. Consequently, when we say that we believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church, then by Church we mean all the people who profess the same Orthodox faith, and not the building where we go to pray to God and which is called a temple God's.

I acknowledge and openly declare that for spiritual rebirth and forgiveness of sins one only needs to be baptized once.

The Creed only mentions baptism, because it is, as it were, the door to the Church of Christ. Only those who have been baptized can use other sacraments.

A sacrament is such a sacred action through which the grace of the Holy Spirit, or the saving power of God, is secretly, invisibly given to a person.

The Holy Orthodox Church contains seven sacraments; baptism, confirmation, repentance, communion, marriage, priesthood and consecration of oil.

11 Tea of the resurrection of the dead.

11 I look forward to the resurrection of the dead.

I expect (tea) with hope and confidence that a time will come when the souls of dead people will again unite with their bodies and all the dead will come to life.

The resurrection of the dead will follow simultaneously with the second and glorious coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the moment of the general resurrection, the bodies of dead people will change, in essence the bodies will be the same as those we now have, but in quality they will be different from the current bodies - they will be spiritual - incorruptible and immortal. The bodies of those people who will still be alive at the second coming of the Savior will also change. According to the change of man himself, the entire visible world will change, namely, from the corruptible to the imperishable.

12 [Tea] and the life of the next century. Amen.

12 and the life of the next century. Amen.

I expect that after the resurrection of the dead, the judgment of Christ will be completed, and for the righteous there will come the endless joy of union with God. The word Amen means confirmation - truly so! Only in this way can the truth of our faith be expressed and cannot be changed by anyone.

10. Ten Commandments of God's Law

1. I am the Lord your God: let there be no gods for you except Me.

2. Do not make for yourself an idol or any likeness, eating in heaven, and eating on earth below, and eating in the waters under the earth: do not bow down to them, nor serve them.

This commandment condemns idolaters, that is, those who worship any creature as the True God. Besides gross idolatry, there are still more subtle sins against the second commandment; these are: covetousness, gluttony, pride, which also includes vanity.

3. You did not accept the Lord your God with everything.

This commandment forbids us to use the name of God in vain, that is, unnecessarily, in empty and vain conversations, and even more so to use it to confirm any lie.

4. Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy: six days thou shalt work, and in them thou shalt do all thy works: and the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.

This commandment commands us, both on Sunday and on all holidays, to visit the temples of God to render to God the honor that creation is obliged to render to the Creator, without delaying this for any reason other than serious illness. Those who, due to laziness or other reasons, do not visit the temples of God, as well as those who visit temples without reverence, sin against this commandment. Those who allow themselves immodest spectacles and entertainment on holidays greatly insult the sanctity of the holidays.

5. Honor your father and your mother, may it be good, and may you live long on earth.

This commandment teaches us to sincerely and unhypocritically love and honor our parents, to obey them in everything, to nourish and give them peace during illness and old age. The name of parents should also be understood as everyone who in different respects stands in place of parents for us: state power and the Fatherland, shepherds and spiritual teachers, elders, benefactors, and rulers.

6. Thou shalt not kill.

This commandment prohibits killing or taking the life of a neighbor in any way. In addition to physical murder, there is spiritual murder. A kind of spiritual murder is temptation when someone seduces a neighbor into unbelief or draws him into lawlessness and thereby exposes his soul to spiritual death. When it is forbidden to harm the life of a neighbor, it is thereby commanded to protect his life and well-being as much as possible. In this regard, we must do the following: help the poor, serve the sick, console the sad, alleviate the situation of the unfortunate, be merciful, treat everyone meekly, lovingly and edifyingly. Those who, indulging in passions, ruin their health or recklessly take their own lives sin against this commandment.

7. Don't commit adultery.

8. Don't steal.

This commandment prohibits stealing or appropriating in any way what belongs to others. There are special sins prohibited by this commandment: robbery, or taking someone else's property by force; theft, or stealing someone else's thing secretly, appropriating something of someone else's by cunning, deceit; sacrilege, or appropriation of what is dedicated to God and what belongs to the Church; bribery (bribery). When these sins are prohibited, the following virtues are prescribed through this: unselfishness, fidelity, justice, mercy towards the poor.

9. Do not listen to your friend's false testimony.

This commandment prohibits false testimony against one's neighbor and also any other lie. It is prohibited under the name of false evidence: false judicial evidence; false testimony, except in court, when someone is slandered in absentia or someone is unfairly blamed to his face.

10. Thou shalt not covet thy true wife, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, nor his village, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor any of his livestock, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.

In the previous commandments it was forbidden to harm a neighbor by deed or word, and the tenth commandment prohibits any unclean thought against the honor and property of a neighbor. Envy in all forms is the main sin against this commandment. The tenth commandment imposes on us the following duties: to keep a pure heart, to be satisfied with everything.Blessed are the peacemakers, for these shall be called the sons of God.

8. Blessed is the exile of truth for the sake of them, for those are the Kingdom of Heaven.

9. Blessed are you, when they revile you and condemn you, and say all sorts of evil things against you who lie to Me for my sake. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is abundant in Heaven.

(Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5, verses 3 - 12).

Interpretation of the Beatitudes

1. Those who desire bliss must be poor in spirit. To be poor in spirit means to have a spiritual conviction: everything we have is given by God, and we cannot do anything good without God’s help and grace; and thus, consider that we are nothing and resort to God’s mercy in everything. Briefly, spiritual poverty is humility.

2. Those who desire bliss must be weepers. Those who mourn are those who lament and weep in repentance for their sins, that is, they lament that they serve unworthily before God and with their sins offend His greatness and deserve His wrath. Those who mourn will be comforted, that is, they will receive forgiveness of sins and peace of conscience.

3. Those who desire bliss must be meek. Meek people are people who try not to irritate anyone and not to be irritated by anything. These are gentle people who are patient with each other and do not murmur against God. The meek will inherit the earth, that is, the Kingdom of Heaven.

4. Those who desire bliss must be hungry and thirsty for righteousness. Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are those who, like food and drink for the body, desire salvation for the soul - justification through faith in Jesus Christ. Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be satisfied, that is, they will receive the justification and salvation they desire.

5. Those who desire bliss must be merciful. The merciful are those who show mercy and compassion to their neighbors, or, in other words, who do deeds of mercy. The works of bodily mercy are as follows: to feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked or lacking in necessary and decent clothing, to visit someone in prison, to visit the sick, to serve him and help him recover or Christian preparation for death, to welcome a stranger into a home and provide rest, bury the dead in squalor (in poverty, misery). The works of spiritual mercy are as follows: by exhortation to convert a sinner from the wrong path, who does not know how to teach truth and goodness, to give good and timely advice to one’s neighbor in difficulty or in case of danger unnoticed by him, to pray to God for him, to comfort the sad person, not to repay the evil that others have done to us , forgive offenses with all your heart. The Lord promises the merciful that they will receive mercy. This implies pardon from eternal condemnation for sins at the Judgment of God.

6. Those who desire bliss must be pure in heart. Purity of heart is not quite the same as sincerity. Candor, or sincerity, according to which a person does not hypocritically show good dispositions without having them in his heart, but shows good dispositions of the heart in good deeds, is only the lowest degree of purity of heart. A person achieves a high degree of purity by the constant and unrelenting feat of vigilance over himself, expelling from his heart every unlawful desire and thought and every attachment to earthly objects and constantly preserving in his heart the remembrance of God and the Lord Jesus Christ with faith and love for Him. Those who are pure in heart will see God, that is, they will receive the highest degree of Eternal Bliss.

7. Those who desire bliss must be peacemakers. Peacemakers are those people who live with everyone in peace and harmony, forgive everyone’s offenses and try, if possible, to reconcile others who quarrel with each other, and if impossible, pray to God for their reconciliation. Peacemakers are promised the gracious name of the sons of God, since by their deed they imitate the Only Begotten Son of God, who came to earth to reconcile sinners with the justice of God.

8. Those who desire blessedness must be ready to suffer persecution for the sake of righteousness. This commandment requires the following qualities: love of truth, constancy and firmness in virtue, courage and patience. For patiently and resignedly enduring persecution, they are promised the Kingdom of Heaven.

9. Those who desire bliss must be ready to endure all kinds of reproach, disasters, even death itself for the name of Christ. The feat, according to this commandment, is called the feat of martyrdom. The Lord promises a great reward in Heaven for this feat, that is, a preferential and high degree of bliss.

12. Orthodox literature about family and raising children

1. Nun Nina (Krygina) (professor in the world, candidate of psychological sciences). Series of lectures and programs on family topics.

2. Priest Ilya Shugaev: “Once and for a lifetime”, as well as sermons, conversations, lectures about the family. 15.Catechist's phone number: 8-908-165-85-68 (Oleg).

According to the Trebnik, only one recipient is considered necessary - a man for a male person being baptized or a woman for a female person. But according to an unwritten tradition, there can be two recipients: a man and a woman.

During the Baptism of infants, the godparents bring and hold their godchildren in their arms throughout the entire rite, and if there are two godparents, then the boy can be held by the godmother, and the girl by the godfather until immersion in the font. After immersing the baby in the font three times, he returns to the arms of his recipient (of the same gender as the baby), who must have a clean diaper or towel in his hands to dry the baby's body. The recipient must know the Creed and read it at the appropriate moment; in addition, he gives answers to the priest’s questions about renunciation of Satan and union with Christ. Subsequently, when the child reaches conscious age, the recipient must explain to him the basics of the Orthodox faith. These responsibilities presuppose, of course, that the recipient himself is a baptized and Orthodox believer, familiar with the content of the Holy Scriptures, knowing the basic prayers, and attending church services.

Monks and nuns are not allowed to be ordained; Likewise, parents cannot be the successors of their own children. In general, spouses cannot be the successors at the baptism of one baby, but at the same time, a husband and wife are allowed to be the successors of different children of the same parents, but at different times.

As a last resort, Baptism is allowed without recipients, then the priest himself is considered the godfather.

Godparents have 3 main responsibilities towards their godchildren:

1. Prayer room. The godfather is obliged to pray for his godson, and also, as he grows up, to teach prayer so that the godson himself can communicate with God and ask Him for help in all his life circumstances.

2. Moral. Using your own example, you must show your child human virtues - love, kindness, mercy, etc., so that the child grows up to be a truly good Christian.

3. Doctrinal. Teach your godson the basics of the Christian religion, and if you yourself are not knowledgeable enough, then first fill in the gaps yourself.

You promised God that you would bring this baby to him. Remember this.

Who can be the recipient?

According to the ancient church rule, during the Baptism of infants, only one recipient was considered necessary - a man for a male person being baptized or a woman for a female person (Great Trebnik, Chapter 5, “see”). The rule about “being one recipient at Baptism” belonged to the first centuries of Christianity and was strictly observed in the Eastern and Western Churches until the 9th century. In our time, the custom of having two godparents at Baptism has become widespread: the godfather and the godmother.

The very rite of the Sacrament of Baptism presupposes the presence of recipients in person during its celebration. As an exception, a foster parent for a boy and a foster parent for a girl can be elected in absentia. In case of extreme need, Baptism can be performed without a recipient, or the priest himself who performs Baptism can replace him. Recipients can be Orthodox people who know the Orthodox doctrine or, at least, its foundations. The recipient is required to know the Creed and read it at Baptism. Only Orthodox recipients or recipients have ecclesiastical significance. Their names are remembered in prayers and included in certificates of Baptism. The recipient “represents the face of the person being baptized and makes vows to God for him, makes, confesses the symbol and is obliged to instruct the adopted son in the faith and law of God, which neither an ignoramus in the faith nor a non-believer can do.” According to the practice of the ancient Church, just as non-Christians are never allowed to adopt children, it is also indecent for an Orthodox Christian to be the foster child of non-Christian parents, except in those cases when the children are baptized into the Orthodox faith.

The insane, completely ignorant of the faith, as well as criminals and obvious sinners cannot be recipients (Peter Mohyla's Breviary). For example, those who, due to negligence, have not attended confession and Holy Communion for 5–10 years cannot give guidance and edification in life to their godchildren. Minors cannot be recipients, since they are still incapable of teaching and are not firm in their understanding of the faith and power of the Sacrament (except in those cases when it is completely impossible to have an adult recipient).

The Ancient Russian Church did not know such a rule that would eliminate monks from succession. It is known that the godfathers of our Russian grand ducal and royal children were mostly monks. Only later were monks prohibited from succession because it involves the monk in communication with the world (Nomocanon at the Great Trebnik). Parents cannot be recipients of their own children from the baptismal font. It is inconvenient for a woman who is in normal purification to be a recipient. In such cases, you can postpone Baptism or invite another recipient.

Church rules do not prohibit siblings, father and daughter, or mother and son from being the adoptive parents of the same baby. Currently, priests do not allow a husband and wife to jointly foster the same baby, especially since among the majority of the laity such adoption is considered impermissible. In order to prevent violations of existing rules regarding godparents, the priest usually learns in advance from parents who they want to have as godparents for their children.

What is baptism? Why is it called a sacrament?

Baptism is one of the seven sacraments of the Orthodox Church, in which the believer, by immersing the body three times in water with the invocation of the name of the Holy Trinity - the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, dies to a life of sin, and is reborn by the Holy Spirit to Eternal Life. Of course, this action has a basis in Holy Scripture: “Whoever is not born of water and the Spirit cannot enter the Kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Christ says in the Gospel: “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; and whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16).

So, baptism is necessary for a person to be saved. Baptism is a new birth for spiritual life in which a person can achieve the Kingdom of Heaven. And it is called a sacrament because through it, in a mysterious, incomprehensible way for us, the invisible saving power of God - grace - acts on the person being baptized. Like other sacraments, baptism is divinely ordained. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself, sending the apostles to preach the Gospel, taught them to baptize people: “Go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). Having been baptized, a person becomes a member of the Church of Christ and can now begin the rest of the church sacraments.

How many godparents should a child have?

Church rules require that the child have a recipient of the same gender as the person being baptized. That is, for a boy it is a man, and for a girl it is a woman. In tradition, both godparents are usually chosen for the child: father and mother. This does not contradict the canons in any way. It will also not be a contradiction if, if necessary, the child has a recipient of a different gender than the person being baptized. The main thing is that this is a truly religious person who would subsequently conscientiously fulfill his duties in raising a child in the Orthodox faith. Thus, the person being baptized can have one or, at most, two recipients.

What are the requirements for godparents?

The first and main requirement is the undoubted Orthodox faith of the recipients. Godparents must be churchgoers, living a church life. After all, they will have to teach their godson or goddaughter the basics of the Orthodox faith and give spiritual instructions. If they themselves are ignorant in these matters, then what can they teach the child? Godparents are entrusted with the enormous responsibility of spiritual education of their godchildren, for they, together with their parents, are responsible for it before God. This responsibility begins with the renunciation of “Satan and all his works, and all his angels, and all his service, and all his pride.” Thus, the godparents, being responsible for their godson, make a promise that their godchild will be a Christian.

If the godson is already an adult and himself utters the words of renunciation, then the godparents present at the same time become guarantors before the Church of the fidelity of his words. Godparents are obliged to teach their godchildren to resort to the saving Sacraments of the Church, mainly confession and communion, they must give them knowledge about the meaning of worship, the features of the church calendar, the grace-filled power of miraculous icons and other shrines. Godparents must teach those received from the font to attend church services, fast, pray and observe other provisions of the church charter. But the main thing is that godparents should always pray for their godson. Obviously, strangers cannot be godparents, for example, some compassionate grandmother from the church, whom the parents persuaded to “hold” the baby at baptism.

But you should also not take simply close people or relatives as godparents who do not meet the spiritual requirements that were set out above.

Godparents should not become an object of personal gain for the parents of the person being baptized. The desire to become related to an advantageous person, for example, a boss, often guides parents when choosing godparents for a child. At the same time, forgetting about the true purpose of baptism, parents can deprive the child of a real godfather, and impose on him one who subsequently will not care at all about the spiritual education of the child, for which he himself will also answer before God. Unrepentant sinners and people leading an immoral lifestyle cannot become godparents.

How many times can a person become a godfather?

In the Orthodox Church there is no clear canonical definition regarding how many times a person can become a godfather during his life. The main thing that a person agreeing to become a successor must remember is that this is a great responsibility for which he will have to answer before God. The measure of this responsibility determines how many times a person can take on succession. This measure is different for each person and, sooner or later, a person may have to abandon the new adoption.

Catechesis: MEMO FOR GODPARENTS (ADEPOSCENTS).

Duties and responsibilities of godparents
in relation to godchildren

Baptism is the most important event in a person’s life. Baptism opens the only path to salvation, to eternal life, gives great gifts, and together, imposes a person’s great responsibility for his soul and life given by the Creator . Know that the true purpose of Baptism is union with God in eternal life, and a person’s remission of his sins . Anyone who accepts the Sacrament of Baptism outside of these purposes (by custom or superstition), and does not become a full member of the Church, is comparable to a seed without a root that withers in the sun (Mark 4:5).

To perform the Sacrament of Baptism, the person being baptized must have receiver(i.e. godparent, godparent). It is difficult to imagine that a child raised on his own, without proper direction, training and spiritual help, will confidently become a real Christian.

Dear godparents! You must not only love and care for your spiritual child, but, with God’s help, create a true Christian in him. Remember that you promise to bring your godson to God.

If you feel that you are not yet internally ready for the role of godfather, it is better to refuse to be a godfather. At least this will be fairer to the godson than taking responsibility for his spiritual education and not fulfilling his promise.

To teach their godchildren the basics of the Christian faith, godparents themselves must have faith and certain knowledge. Whether to be a real Christian depends on a person’s desire and determination.

Communicate confidentially with your godson; if he is a child, monitor his behavior at home and at school. Help him create a spiritual library, which will include the Gospel, Orthodox prayer book, Psalter and other books. For young children, an illustrated children's Bible and an Orthodox audio and video library would be a good gift. Bring your infant godchildren to Communion more often (and help parents in this): there is a lot of evil in today’s world, and only spiritual weapons protect against spiritual danger. You can bring children to church outside of office hours. There is no need to explain how important it is for a child from childhood, like a young plant, to take root and strengthen itself in a church - a house of prayer, to be in it as in a familiar and familiar home!

So, godparents have the following responsibilities:

1. Prayer room. The godfather is obliged to pray for his godson, and also, as the godson grows up, teach him prayer so that he himself can communicate with God and ask Him for help in all his life circumstances.
2. Doctrinal. Teach the godson the basics of the Christian faith.

3. Moral. Using your own and personal example, show your godson human virtues - love, kindness, mercy, hard work, honesty, etc., so that he grows and becomes a real Christian. We must not forget that Christian commandments begin with generally accepted human values.

About godparents (fathers)

Parents should look for a godfather and godmother carefully, not frivolously. The first condition is that the godfather must be a baptized Orthodox person, a believer, preferably a member of the church.

Godparents can also be:

1. Grandparents, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts - in exceptional cases. 2. Brother and sister, father and daughter, mother and son can be godparents of the same child. 3. You can become godfather to different members of the same family.

Godparents cannot be:

1. Minors. 2. Parents of the person being baptized. 3. Monks and nuns. 4. Husband and wife (or bride and groom) cannot be the recipients of the same baby; they can be the adoptive parents of different children in the same family.

Pregnancy of the godmother is an acceptable condition for participation in the Sacrament of Baptism.

It should be remembered that during the period of monthly purification a woman cannot participate in Christenings (as well as in other Sacraments of the Church).

Conducting public conversations for recipients and baptized people

During the Sacrament of Baptism, the person being baptized must consciously answer the priest’s question whether he is renouncing Satan and uniting with Christ, and also read the Creed himself - a short text-prayer setting out the main dogmas of the Church. A child, especially a newborn baby, cannot say anything about his faith. Therefore, all the vows for him, as well as the Creed, are pronounced by his godfather.

However, today many future godparents themselves have a vague idea of Christianity, have never confessed or received communion, which puts them outside of life with God and the Church, and indicates their unpreparedness for the role of godparents. Even if an adult who has consciously come to Christ wants to be baptized, he will need preparation for entering the Church.

With the blessing of the ruling bishop, in the parishes of the Orthodox Church, catechetical (educational) conversations are held for recipients, as well as for those baptized over 12 years of age. During the conversation, the necessary aids are given and various issues are agreed upon.

If the future godparents have never taken part in the Sacraments of Confession and Communion, or have participated in them for a long time (up to several years), they confess and receive communion.Godparents who regularly attend services and participate in the Sacraments are free from these requirements.

After Communion, godparents MUST inform the catechist about this.

The Sacrament of Baptism is performed ONLY after an entry in the Baptism Register and after a conversation with the catechist.

The christening donation is made on the day of the christening.

Conversations are conducted by the catechist on Saturdays and Sundays during church opening hours, or by agreement

The Sacrament of Baptism is taking place in our church

ON SATURDAYS AT 10.30,

or on weekdays by agreement with the priest

Prepare in advance everything you need for Baptism: pectoral cross, rope (or chain), clean light towel, which should not then be used on the farm, And clean, light-colored clothes for changing without inscriptions or drawings.

All those present at the Sacrament of Baptism must be neatly dressed and wear a cross on their body. Women must wear a headscarf and be modest in their use of cosmetics (lipstick is not acceptable).

It is advisable for the newly baptized to confess and receive communion at the Liturgy as soon as possible. Children go to confession starting at the age of 7.

    REMINDER

    preparing for Holy Baptism

Holy Baptism is a Sacrament in which the spiritual birth of a person takes place for eternal life with God.

It is advisable to perform baptism when the child is between 8 and 40 days old, but if he is dangerously ill, he should be baptized as early as possible. Those who were not baptized in childhood should be baptized at a conscious age. This requires faith in God and the Savior of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ, repentance from a previous sinful life, familiarity with the basics of Christian doctrine and the desire to become a member of the Church of Christ.

At baptism, a promise is made to God to live according to His will, according to His commandments and to avoid all evil, all sin, all communication with evil spirits.

The adult being baptized makes this promise himself, but when an infant is baptized, this is done on his behalf by the recipients, i.e. godfather and mother. They thereby take responsibility for the spiritual development of the child, for his upbringing in the Christian faith and inclusion in the Holy Church. Godparents must be Orthodox and pious people who regularly go to confession, and if married, then married in the Church. If a godmother has children, then all of them must be churchgoers

(the rite of churching must be performed over them). Godparents of one child should not be married to each other.

In preparation for baptism, it is necessary to undergo an interview with a priest. Adults preparing for baptism must appear for an interview themselves, but if a child is preparing for baptism, then parents and adoptive parents come to the interview.

Adults and recipients preparing for baptism must remember the prayers: “Our Father,” “Heavenly King,” “It is worthy to eat,” “Virgin Mother of God, Rejoice,” and meaningfully read the Creed.

Without two preliminary interviews, baptism is not performed. If the recipients, parents or adults being baptized are ready for the Sacrament of Baptism, have confessed and received communion, and have demonstrated knowledge of prayers, the priest either blesses them to perform baptism in the near future and issues an appropriate certificate to be presented at the Candle Shop during registration, or gives instructions for their further preparation.
