Before starting to study A.I. Kuprin’s story “The Garnet Bracelet,” we got acquainted with the work itself. The Russian writer took a real story as the basis for the story. A telegraph official, hopelessly in love with the wife of a governor, once presented her with a gift - a gilded chain with a pendant. The main character of the story, Princess Sheina, also receives a gift from a secret admirer - a garnet bracelet. This admirer turns out to be a petty official, Zheltkov. He has been experiencing his feelings for the princess for many years now. The note that the fan attached to the decoration says that such a green garnet can bring the gift of foresight to its owner. Vera Nikolaevna tells her husband about an unexpected gift, and also shows him a note from a secret admirer. Zheltkov’s love for the main character turns out to be unrequited and tragic. As a result, Zheltkov decides to commit suicide in order to free his beloved from shame. The story ends with the heroine realizing how much the already deceased official loved her. And this strong, bright feeling that was sent to Vera Nikolaevna disappears with the death of Zheltkov.

Having analyzed the ideological and artistic content of the story, it was revealed that “The Garnet Bracelet” is a story about love, which receives a philosophical and tragic sound from A.I. Kuprin. The author’s position is expressed in the words of General Anosov: “Love must be a tragedy. The greatest secret in the world! No life conveniences, calculations or compromises should concern her.” Vera Nikolaevna has a happy family and a rich house. Her husband, Vasily Lvovich Shein, loves and respects her. Vera Nikolaevna’s own feeling of love has long turned into a feeling of lasting and faithful friendship. And suddenly the calm, measured life was disrupted by Zheltkov’s confessions: “It’s not my fault, Vera Nikolaevna, that God wanted to send me love for you as a great happiness.” Zheltkov does not ask for anything and does not hope for anything. He believes that his fate, given by God, is an insane unrequited love for Vera Nikolaevna. Zheltkov’s pure love is tragic because it is unrequited. In the name of love, the hero is capable of anything. Only after Zheltkov’s death did Vera Nikolaevna understand that true holy love is extremely rare in nature and is accessible to few.

The problem of unrequited love in A.I. Kuprin is solved tragically: the main character prefers death rather than unrequited love. “Be silent and perish” - this is the spiritual vow of a telegraph operator in love. His love is passionate, sizzling, he is ready to take it with him to the other world. Death does not frighten the hero. Love is stronger than death. Instead of anger and envy, the hero experiences a feeling of gratitude to the one who gave him hope for love. The little man was defeated by death. But what about this problem in modern society? Unrequited love is a fairly common occurrence in our lives. Many people around the world suffer from a lack of reciprocity. In general, love has always been a mystery and now it also defies explanation. Therefore, it is impossible to answer the question we posed unambiguously. It all depends specifically on each person and on the specific situation. And in our time there are “Zheltkovs”.

As a result of project activities, we found out that there is no clear answer to the question “What is love?” No. We analyzed the images of the heroes, the ideological and thematic content of the work, and tried to compare the views of different eras on a problematic issue. We came to the conclusion that in A.I. Kuprin’s story “The Garnet Bracelet” love is shown as divine providence. Despite the sad ending, the princess feels truly happy, because she received what her heart had long dreamed of, and Zheltkov’s feelings will always remain in her memory. “Garnet Bracelet” is not only a work of art, but also an eternal sad prayer for love.

- Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin (1st year) is one of the most popular writers of pre-revolutionary Russia. His prose was noted with approval. And for Kuprin, these great masters of words remained the ideal of an artist for the rest of his life.

The only joy and meaning in Zheltkov’s life was his love for Vera. He did not have any goals in life, he was no longer interested in anything.

As a result, he decides to commit suicide and fulfills Vera’s will by leaving her. Zheltkova’s love will remain unrequited...

She will realize late that it was true love, the one that many can only dream of, passed her by. Later, looking at the dead Zheltkov, Vera will compare him with the greatest people.

The story “The Garnet Bracelet” colorfully shows us all the torment and tender feelings that are contrasted with the lack of spirituality in this world, where a lover is ready to do anything for the sake of his beloved.

A person who has managed to love so reverently has some special concept of life. And even though Zheltkov was just an ordinary person, he turned out to be above all established norms and standards.

Kuprin portrays love as an unattainable mystery, but for such love there is no doubt. “The Garnet Bracelet” is a very interesting and at the same time sad work, in which Kuprin tried to teach us to appreciate something in life in a timely manner...

Therefore, when the realization of the hopelessness of his love and life came to him, he decides to give the woman he loves a gift with which, although not on his own, he will be able to touch her. This bracelet was the most expensive item our poor hero had.

Love at a distance was very difficult for him, but he cherished it in his heart for a long time. In parting, before his death, he wrote her one last letter, in which he said that he was leaving this life at the behest of God, and that he was blessing her and wishing her further happiness. But one can understand that Vera, who realized her chance too late, will no longer be able to live calmly and happily; perhaps this was the only true and sincere love that was waiting for her in life, and she missed it.

In this story by Kuprin, love has a tragic connotation, because it remained an unopened flower in the lives of two people. At first she was unresponsive for a very long time, but when she began to sprout into the second heart, the first, already exhausted from waiting, stopped beating.

The work “Garnet Bracelet” can be perceived not only as an “ode” to love, but also as a prayer for love. Zheltkov in his letter used the expression “hallowed be thy name,” which is a reference to the scriptures of God. He deified his chosen one, which, unfortunately, still could not bring his life to a joyful end. But he did not suffer, he loved, and this feeling was a gift, because not everyone is given the opportunity to experience such a strong feeling at least once in their life, for which our hero remained grateful to his chosen one. She gave him, albeit unrequited, but true love!

Over the many centuries of human existence, countless works have been written on the topic of love. And this is not without reason. After all, love occupies a huge place in the life of every person, giving it a special meaning. Among all these works, one can single out very few that describe as strong a feeling of love as Kuprin’s work “Garnet Bracelet”.

The main character, official Zheltkov, as he himself describes his feeling, has the happiness of experiencing real, boundless love. His feeling is so strong that in some places he can be mistaken for an unhealthy, mentally ill person. He knows about the impossibility of his further coexistence with this feeling of love. That is why the best way out for him is suicide. Before this act, he assures everyone in a letter that he has lived a happy life.
