Shanghai Grand Theater. Shanghai theaters. Shanghai Theater Center
The Shanghai Grand Theater is one of the largest theaters in the world. It opened in August 1998, and since then more than 6,000 performances have been staged here.
On the stages of this theater operas, musicals, ballets are staged, symphonies and concerts of classical music are performed.
The theater consists of 10 floors, 2 of which are underground, and three stages. The hall of the main stage can accommodate 1,800 spectators, the middle stage - 600 spectators, the small stage - 200 spectators. All stages are equipped with modern technical devices and lighting equipment.
The theater lobby is very beautifully and elegantly decorated - white marble walls, a floor with a picture of a piano keyboard, and a hanging crystal chandelier from the ceiling.
Lanxin Theater
Lanxin Theater is a pioneering theater of the first half of the 20th century and a luxurious entertainment venue in Shanghai. In 1952, the theater was renamed the Shanghai Art Theater. In 1991, the building was rebuilt, renovated and restored to its original name Lanxin.
Today the three-story theater building has the shape of a regular hexagon. The façade of the building is painted gray and white. The central windows of the second floor have an arch shape.
Currently, the theater has 446 seats, 250 of which are located on the lower tier. Concerts, circus and dance programs, and theatrical performances of various genres are held here. The theater works closely with many foreign theaters.
Shanghai Theater Center
Shanghai Theater Center is a complex for holding events and attending concerts.
Shanghai Theater Center was built in 1990. This is an eight-story building with three towers, the total area of which is more than 30,000 square meters.
In addition to the theater hall, there is a hotel, shops and cafes. The theater hall seats just over one and a half thousand people.
On the roof of the center there is an open terrace with green spaces and breathtaking views of the city.
The Shanghai Theater Center offers jazz concerts, chamber music concerts, operas and acrobatic shows. Acrobatic performances here take place three times a week and last about an hour and a half.
Yifu Theater
Yifu Theater is a famous opera house. It was opened in 1925. Initially, the theater was called Tian Chan and was the largest opera house in the Far East.
In the period from 1990 to 1994, the theater was reconstructed. Industrialist Shao Yifu allocated large funds for repair work, after whom the theater was named. Currently, the two-story theater building, equipped with modern equipment, can accommodate about 1,000 spectators.
The repertoire is dominated by Peking opera, but opera troupes from all over China are also frequent guests on the theater stage.
The Shanghai Grand Theater is located in the center of Shanghai, on People's Square. The cultural institution was opened in 1998. Since that time, more than a thousand different performances have been organized here. On the stage of the Shanghai Grand Theater they stage:
- musicals,
- ballets,
- operas.
Chamber and symphonic music concerts are also held here. You can buy a ticket to a classical Chinese opera or drama performance.
Be prepared for the performances to be in Chinese. If you don’t know the language, you won’t understand much, but even just watching the action and looking at the actors’ costumes and makeup will be interesting.
History of the Shanghai Grand Theater and its current state
Construction of the theater took 4 years. The current area of the building is more than 11 square kilometers. The theater building has 10 floors. 6 of them belong directly to the cultural institution.
The theater has three stages:
- Main. The auditorium can accommodate 1,800 people. Large performances (opera and ballet performances, symphonic music concerts) are usually staged on the main stage.
- Average. The auditorium seats 600 guests. Chamber music concerts are held here.
- Small. This hall has 200 seats. Fashion shows and other similar events are usually held here.
The theater foyer deserves special attention. It has an area of about 2 thousand square meters and is distinguished by its elegant design. There is a huge chandelier under the ceiling. The floors here are made of rare marble, which is called “crystal white”. The snow-white coating is additionally decorated with images. They resemble piano keys. Similar images can be seen on stairs and columns.

An excerpt characterizing the Shanghai Grand Theater
– That’s when my mother heard about Venice... My father spent hours telling her about the freedom and beauty of this city, about its palaces and canals, about secret gardens and huge libraries, about bridges and gondolas, and much, much more. And my impressionable mother, without even seeing this wonderful city, fell in love with it with all her heart... She couldn’t wait to see this city with her own eyes! And very soon her dream came true... Her father brought her to a magnificent palace, full of faithful and silent servants, from whom there was no need to hide. And, starting from that day, mom could spend hours doing her favorite thing, without fear of being misunderstood or, even worse, insulted. Her life became pleasant and secure. They were a truly happy married couple, who gave birth to a girl exactly one year later. They called her Isidora... It was me.I was a very happy child. And, as far as I can remember, the world has always seemed beautiful to me... I grew up surrounded by warmth and affection, among kind and attentive people who loved me very much. Mom soon noticed that I had a powerful Gift, much stronger than her own. She began to teach me everything that she knew and that her grandmother taught her. And later my father also became involved in my “witch” upbringing.
I am telling you all this, dear ones, not because I want to tell you the story of my happy life, but so that you can better understand what will follow a little later... Otherwise, you will not feel all the horror and pain of what me and my family had to endure .
When I turned seventeen, rumors about me spread far beyond the borders of my hometown, and there was no end to those who wanted to hear their fate. I was very tired. No matter how gifted I was, the daily stress was exhausting, and in the evenings I literally collapsed... My father always objected to such “violence,” but my mother (she herself was once unable to fully use her gift) believed that I am in perfect order, and that I must honestly practice my talent.
Many years passed like this. I have long had my own personal life and my own wonderful, beloved family. My husband was a learned man, his name was Girolamo. I think we were destined for each other, since from the very first meeting that took place in our house, we almost never parted again... He came to us for some book recommended by my father. That morning I was sitting in the library and, as was my custom, studying someone else’s work. Girolamo entered suddenly, and when he saw me there, he was completely taken aback... His embarrassment was so sincere and sweet that it made me laugh. He was a tall and strong brown-eyed brunette, who at that moment blushed like a girl who met her fiancé for the first time... And I immediately realized that this was my destiny. We soon got married and were never apart again. He was a wonderful husband, affectionate and gentle, and very kind. And when our little daughter was born, he became the same loving and caring father. So ten very happy and cloudless years passed. Our sweet daughter Anna grew up cheerful, lively, and very smart. And already in her early ten years, she, too, like me, began to slowly manifest her Gift... Shanghai Grand Theater poster, Shanghai Grand Theater buy
