Especially for my blog, she shared instructions for a newcomer to the cultural life of the capital. How not to get lost in one hundred Moscow theaters? Which performances are best to start getting acquainted with? How to buy a ticket and choose the best seat?

Deciding on a theater

Are you new?, do you go to the theater on holidays and special dates? Start with those theaters whose repertoire is very wide and consists of classics and modern productions. Do you want Chekhov, Ostrovsky, Pushkin? Or is it more interesting for you to have the theater speak to you in modern language? You can choose according to your taste.

Best classic/contemporary production ratio:

  1. Theater named after E. Vakhtangov (3 stages - main stage, new scene, Studio. Everything is located nearby)
  2. Moscow Art Theater named after A.P. Chekhov (3 stages - main stage, small stage, new scene. They are also nearby)
  3. Theater named after A.S. Pushkin (2 stages - the main stage and a branch. Located at a distance of 350 meters from each other)
  4. Theater named after M.N. Ermolova (2 stages - the main stage and the new stage. Located at a distance of 100 meters from each other)
  5. Theater named after V.V. Mayakovsky (2 sites - main site - Tverskaya/Pushkinskaya metro station. Branch on Sretenka - Sukharevskaya metro station, Sretensky Boulevard)

If You progressive youth and you want a “brain explosion” and fashionable productions, then you will be surprised and attracted:

  1. Theater Praktika
  2. Gogol Center
  3. Meyerhold Center
  4. Theater.doc

Do you want to spend the evening in an atmospheric place, which looks more like a home than a classical theater? Then my choice:

  1. School of Dramatic Art
  2. Workshop of Peter Fomenko
  3. Theater Arts Studio. Here you will be fed green apples or treated to pickles, sprat and vodka before the performance “Moscow-Petushki”.

live not in the center and returning after the theater is far, dark and scary for you? Catch the list interesting theaters in districts:

  1. Theater in the South-West (metro station Yugo-Zapadnaya)

Where and how to buy tickets?

In the 21st century it's time to box office becomes something archaic. Of course, people stand on the first day of sales (just look at the photos on Instagram from Kamergersky Lane and Moscow Art Theater) and waiting for tickets to top premieres.

There are also queues at Grand Theatre, and to Vakhtangovsky, and to the Workshop of Pyotr Fomenko. But I sincerely advise you not to give in to the hype and calmly buy tickets online.

  1. Services for purchasing tickets - Ticketland, Bigbilet. They charge a minimal service fee (5-10%). And for some theaters they don’t charge at all (Ticketland does not charge fees for performances by the Mayakovsky Theater, Pushkin Theater, Theater of Nations, Moscow Art Theater named after A.P. Chekhov and many others). It is better to print tickets or save them in Wallet. You can accumulate points and then use them to pay for part of the ticket.
  2. Don’t be lazy - go to the theaters’ websites. They sell tickets well without intermediaries. Subscribe to our newsletter. The Vakhtangov Theater will notify you a week in advance about the poster and the start of sales. The Pushkin Theater and the Tabakov Theater will tell you about upcoming premieres, Sovremennik will remind you about next week’s performances, Lenkom will send information about the sale of tickets with discounts.
  3. Follow the theaters on Instagram. My favorite atmospheric and informative ones:

How to choose a convenient place?

My personal life hack for up to 2000 rubles per ticket.

  1. Vakhtangov Theater (main stage): strong back — choose side reclining seats. They are very convenient and budget-friendly. Good vision — sit on the mezzanine (rows 1–3). From there you can clearly see the large-scale scenery and the plastic productions look great. I don’t recommend a balcony (there are often noisy schoolchildren and students there). The amphitheater is cold (and they even provide blankets), and the sound is often more muffled. Vakhtangov Theater (new stage) — you can buy absolutely any seat, even the last row (rows with a lift). Vakhtangov Theater (studio) is a very small space. Take row 1 or 4. Row 1 for complete immersion, row 4 — on the rise so that the heads in front do not interfere.
  2. Pushkin Theater — buy the mezzanine and mezzanine boxes. Everything is seen and heard perfectly.
  3. Mayakovsky Theater (stage on Sretenka) - transforming hall. In most productions, the rows are arranged in a sharp amphitheater. Seen and heard from everywhere.
  4. Workshop of Pyotr Fomenko. Feel free to take the balcony. The only inconvenience is the lack of legroom. But tickets are 500 rubles and no heads in front get in the way :)
  5. Theater Praktika. Due to the intimacy, the effect of presence is achieved. But I don't recommend taking the last 3 rows because of the low ceiling.
  6. Theater doc. A theater that speaks to the audience on sensitive and relevant topics. If you want to be inside the discussion (without direct participation) — choose rows 1–2.
  7. CIM. It has several spaces. More often performances are performed in great hall. Rows of sharp amphitheater. Sit comfortably everywhere. I often choose the penultimate and last row so that I can take in the entire scene.
  8. Theater at the Nikitsky Gate (new stage), Tabakerka (stage on Sukharevskaya), Theater on Serpukhovka (part of the Satyricon productions are staged at this site). I wholeheartedly recommend folding ones. They have a backrest and are very comfortable.
  9. Theater of Satire. Since childhood, this hall reminds me of a circus because of its semicircular shape. Due to this, almost all seats are comfortable, but far from the stage.
  10. The Moscow Art Theater is one of the most comfortable halls. But I will choose the side seats of the balcony only as a last resort.

There were no theatergoers among my friends yesterday, but I was hoping to find an extra ticket at the theater. Naive. At the fountain with Turandot such a show was performed that in general there was no need to go to the theater. There is an organized ticket mafia working there. At first, this homely old lady and the cute student seemed to me to be independent characters, and if about the old lady it was immediately clear that she was working - she had a lot of tickets and she very actively offered them to everyone she met, then about the student I sincerely believed that, well, it didn’t work out evening, the girl didn't come there. Well, they turned out to be from the same gang, they massively attacked those who hesitated at the entrance to the ticket office, and their boss was also present there, offering tickets to the first seats in the stalls. At some point I was distracted, and then I saw something flying and crashing on the asphalt - the phone of a competitor who, as it turned out, dared to try to lure a promising couple from the gang with tickets to the director's box. I thought that there would be a fight, but the competitor turned out to be a clumsy person and did not take revenge for the damage to his phone, he just called someone and complained about his bad guy, but what kind of swearing was there! How they circled around these couples! And all this in front of an astonished public, including potential buyers. expensive tickets! In general, where am I, a teapot, with one unfortunate ticket!

It was my first time at the Vakhtangov Theater, and I admit that it is not the most successful hall if you are not sitting in the most advantageous places. We had the last row of the amphitheater, it was very difficult to see - the slope of the hall was very small. Apparently, it should be quite visible in the first row of the amphitheater or the first rows of the dress circle. Well, there are such halls where you can clearly see from everywhere? There are also terribly uncomfortable chairs; during the most dramatic monologues, the creaking of the chairs around did not subside - because it is very difficult to sit on them without moving. And it was also so cold there that before the intermission the men were stripped of their clothes by their companions, and after that people went to the cloakroom and sat in street jackets.

The performance is beautiful. As a visual artist, the external aesthetics of everything is very important to me, including theatrical productions. It’s there – an almost empty stage with modest corners of furniture on the sides, a huge mirrored backdrop that further expands the space, a ballet barre across the entire stage, laconicism women's suits, choreographic inserts, dramatic music, in general, the framing of the performance itself is wonderful.

I really liked the first half of the performance. Tuminas's production is modern and, accordingly, far from textbook - Onegin and Lensky, 2 pieces each, Olga does not part with the button accordion and plays it even while lying down, Tatyana keeps dragging furniture around with her - now a bed, now a garden bench, there they sing and dance, then they speak French. This may sound strange, but during the week, if you, in principle, do not perceive academic theater, it is fresh, light and unconventional, and Pushkin’s plot and text are preserved and not distorted by these unusual things.

But the second part, which finally begins after a half-hour intermission, is so long, overly detailed, oversaturated with insert numbers that all charm and lightness are lost. There are too many unnecessary characters, in my opinion, huddling in the corners, too many moments to make the audience laugh, that the initially extremely stylish production descends to the level of a theatrical skit. Spectators clap so often that it is more reminiscent of ballet, where it is customary to reward every spectacular jump or spectacular lift with applause. And how many different old women are brought on stage in cameo roles! No, they are all beautiful, including 98-year-old Galina Konovalova, but they are completely unnecessary for the outline of the performance. I’m physically tired of perceiving beauty, and the point is not that it lasts almost 4 hours (at the 4-hour War and Peace at the Fomenko Theater, I couldn’t believe that so much time had really passed, and it was incredibly sad that the performance had already ended!), but the fact is that the action turns out to be very choppy and unable to hold the audience’s interest all this time. If we were sitting in the outer seats, I would seriously think about leaving, although I repeat, initially I really, really liked the performance.

Story Academic Theater named after Evgeny Vakhtangov began with the Student Drama Studio, organized in 1913 under the leadership of the outstanding actor and director Evgeny Bagrationovich Vakhtangov.

The theater’s birthday was the premiere of the play “The Miracle of St. Anthony” on November 13, 1921, and “Princess Turandot” staged in 1922 is considered a landmark performance. The theater lives by the behests left by Yevgeny Vakhtangov, turning the performance into a holiday.

The first site of the new theater was the mansion of V.P. Berg on Arbat. During the Great Patriotic War the building was destroyed and the theater was evacuated to Omsk.

Currently artistic director The Vakhtangov Theater is the owner of many theater awards Rimas Tuminas.

The theater regularly participates in many festivals at the Russian and international levels.
