The Donetsk Drama Theater was founded in 1961, next to Lenin Square, in the city center near popular hotels in Donetsk. The first performance of the newly created Theater of Musical Comedy and Drama named after Artyom was shown on October 11, 1941. Donetsk now has its own Melpomene Height - 3.5 meters (the height was calculated based on the proportions of the entire architectural ensemble of the theater), weight - about a ton. In 2005, the reconstruction of the theater building and the arrangement of the adjacent territory were completed, which was carried out without interrupting the creative activity of the collective, as a result of which a theater complex with five stages appeared in the Donbass. The theater reconstruction project was carried out by the Donbassrekonstruktsiya PPP, the chief architect of the project is Vladimir Buchek, and the chief engineer of the project is Yury Vladimirovich Krasnokutskiy. In May 2017, a commemorative granite slab depicting the facade of the theater was installed on the porch of the main entrance to the building. The memorial was donated to the theater staff on the occasion of the theater's 90th anniversary.

Today the Donetsk National Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater is one of the authoritative theater groups not only in the southeastern region, but throughout Ukraine.
