It is known that many people sooner or later have a desire to create something: make or draw. If you feel the desire to do this, go for it! For example, anyone can create a painting on their own, even if you did not study at an art school or take special drawing courses. Don’t doubt your abilities, maybe not the first time, but you will probably succeed interesting job, which will delight you and give you confidence in your creative abilities. After all, nothing brings us creative satisfaction more than the creative process and its results.

I, like many of you, for a long time I was nurturing the thought “shouldn’t I paint a picture,” especially since I already had oil paints and a pre-prepared canvas (in fact, fiberboard). Finally, I found time for this. Next, I will tell you how you can draw a picture from a photograph yourself.

First, decide on the plot. Personally, I chose one of the photographs from my mother’s garden: a tulip photographed from above. This angle seemed interesting to me and I decided to capture it. Also, this photo is not very detailed, so it is not very difficult to copy it.

In general, paintings with flowers, in my opinion, are universal; they can decorate almost any room. That is, this is a win-win option for decorating a living space. Here are some examples of paintings depicting flowers:

Keep in mind that you can paint in oils not only on canvas, but also on wood, plywood or cardboard. I had a small piece of fiberboard that I coated several times with a special white primer I bought at an art supply store. Brushes can be either natural or synthetic. For oil, stiffer brushes are used than for watercolor paints. Ideally, you need to have brushes of different sizes: a large brush for the background, a medium one for the main work and a small thin one for drawing details.

In Photoshop, I cropped the edges of the tulip photo to fit my fiberboard (26 x 33 cm). To avoid redrawing the image, I printed it on two sheets, since my fiberboard canvas was larger than a landscape sheet.

Then I traced the contours of the tulip with a simple pencil, then, on the window, I outlined these contours on the other side of the paper, so that I could then transfer them to the surface of the fiberboard. In fact, if you have tracing paper, the job of transferring the image onto the surface of the canvas will go much faster.

So, after I transferred the outline of the image from the printed photo onto my base, I began painting my painting. Until this moment, I had never tried to paint in oils, but I had some skills in working with gouache from the time art school, which I completed as a child. The texture of the oil is very similar to gouache - it has the same thick consistency. I used linseed oil to thin my oil paints. You will need a palette - a piece of cardboard, plywood or wood. Squeeze paints onto the palette, if necessary, mix them and then transfer them to the canvas.

I didn’t have an easel, I organized myself workplace, covering the table with newspapers. I held my canvas at an angle - that is, so that it was maximally turned towards my view. I opened the original photograph on the full screen of my laptop and, periodically looking at it, began to draw. I painted my picture according to the principle of developing photography, first filling in the brightest and darkest areas of the image, then the lighter ones, and so on. To determine dark and light areas, periodically squint your eyes while looking at the original image. Keep in mind that the white canvas cannot be left. Even if your image has White color, as it was for me, these white areas need to be covered with white paint. When you radically change the color of the paint you are working with, for example, you painted greens using blue-green shades and now move on to painting the flowers themselves in yellow-red, use a thick napkin or piece of cloth to wipe the brush.

Painting the picture, including transferring the image onto the base, took me no more than one day. That is, I did all this in one sitting. Once you have completed the painting, allow it to dry. How long your work will take to dry will depend on the thickness of the oil layer, paints, thinner, temperature and humidity of the room. In general, this takes about a week. After working with paints, thoroughly dry your brushes with a cloth containing solvent and then rinse them.

When you are sure that the painting has dried, you can think about how to decorate it. If the painting is made on a stretcher covered with canvas, its ends can also be painted over and hung directly on the wall, without a frame. In my case, I used fiberboard - in this case, to make the picture look better, it is better to decorate it with a baguette. Ready-made frames can be found in stores such as IKEA. A custom-made frame will cost significantly more. In addition, you can include a passe-partout in the design of the painting - a plain field between the painting and the frame. Passepartout makes the picture more elegant and visually enlarges it. I made a photo montage to show how the painting could be framed.

Don’t despair if your first pancake turns out lumpy and your first picture doesn’t really satisfy you. Drawing is a skill and this skill can be developed. The more you draw, the better you will get at it. Perhaps one day you will paint a series of paintings and decorate your living space with it. Having a unique, one-of-a-kind image in your home, made with your own hands, is a great pleasure. Having made such a picture as a gift to your loved ones, it will sincerely please them.
