What are cell drawings?

Drawings by cells this is the view visual arts, which uses pixel (dot) graphics. Depending on the complexity of such an image, its area and the number of pixels (in our case, cells) that are painted over increase. The larger the image area, the more realistic the image will be when viewed from a long distance.

Let's look at one example of such work:

As you can see for yourself, if you look at the picture from a distance, we see a clear image, but if you get closer, you see individual filled-in squares. This is a more complex option, which we will look at a little later.

Now let's dive a little into history.

What trace drawings p O notebook cells left in history?

Of course, each of us whose childhood passed in the 80s or 90s will answer this question. And the answer is simple – video games!

We all remember legendary games from our childhood: Mario, tanks, Pacman, Donkey Kong and many others. Our children also know about these games, but do they know that Mario was not always three-dimensional?

In our childhood, games were 8-bit, and even the most colorful landscapes were created using pixel graphics technology. Using the same technology, they draw drawings on notebook cells. And who knows, maybe the legendary Mario or Donkey Kong were also once just drawings in the margins of a school notebook?

Let's try to draw our first drawing using notebook cells, and who knows, maybe it will inspire you to do something that will turn our world upside down, just as the advent of video games once turned it upside down.

What is needed to draw simple drawings using notebook cells?

For drawing simple drawings by cells we will need:

  1. Black helium pen
  2. Markers

How to draw a simple drawing using notebook cells?

In drawing simple drawings on notebook cells there is nothing complicated. All you need is to count the cells, draw an outline and paint over the drawing in accordance with the original. Let's look at this in more detail using the example of a heart.

  1. Take a notebook sheet and a black helium pen, place three crosses as shown in the picture. The crosses will mean that we will paint these squares black.
  1. Next, draw lines that will indicate the boundaries of our drawing in this area.
  1. Let's put 6 more crosses on top, three crosses on each side. Pay attention to the indentations, count the cells that need to be left empty.
  1. Let's draw 2 more lines to mark the boundaries of the drawing.

5. Let’s put another cross on the left and right, and also draw a horizontal line under the upper crosses, marking the boundaries in this place. Do it as shown in the picture.

6. Place 8 crosses vertically, 4 crosses on each side, as shown in the following figure.

7. Let's draw a vertical line on the left, as well as lines on top, as it was done in the figure. With this we will completely mark the upper border of our heart.

9. And do the same with the right half of the heart.

10.Now we just have to mark the boundaries of the heart along its entire perimeter, as this is done in the figures below. Our drawing already resembles a heart, however, that’s not all. Now we need to paint over our heart so that it takes on a finished look.

11. Let's paint over inner part hearts with a red felt-tip pen, but leave three white cells in the upper left corner to indicate a highlight. Do this as shown in the picture.

12. The last thing we need to do is to paint over with a black felt-tip pen those parts that we marked with crosses.

And now, our drawing has acquired its finished form. Now you can draw simple drawings on notebook cells and you can try your hand at drawing other pictures, which can be easily found on the Internet using the keywords “8bit art”.

If you don't want to limit your drawing skills simple drawings, let's look at how they are drawn complex drawings by cells. Initially, the process may seem very complicated to you, but don’t despair ahead of time, you just have to try once and you will understand that drawing such drawings is not only simple, but also very exciting!

What is needed to draw complex drawings on notebook cells?

For drawing complex drawings we will need:

  1. Black helium pen
  2. Markers or pencils
  3. Notebook (or notebook sheet) in a cage
  4. Computer
  5. Photo
  6. Photo editor Adobe Photoshop

In drawing complex drawings, you will also have to calculate the cells that need to be painted over. Difficulty in in this case The only thing is not to make a mistake in the calculation, since we will have more cells than in the previous figure. Our task is also to choose the right shades of felt-tip pens or pencils so that our drawing matches the photograph from which we will draw it.

So, let's get started!

  1. First, let's pick a photo. I chose a photo of a cute puppy that I found on the Internet. Here she is:
  1. Let's open the Adobe Photoshop photo editor and upload our photo:

Now we need to apply a filter to designate the cells in the photo that we will subsequently use to navigate. To do this, select the “Filter” tab at the top and click on the “Filter Gallery” option.

4. In the window that opens, select the “Texture” tab and click once on the “Colored Tile” filter.

5.The parameter sliders on the right should be set as follows:

Square size – 10

Relief – 0

Then click OK.

6. Now our photo is divided into cells. Let's save it on our computer so that later we can open it in full screen or print it.

  1. Now all that remains is to open or print our photo, select pencils or felt-tip pens according to the shades and paint over the cells in accordance with the shades.

That's all!

Drawings by cells- a great way to keep yourself entertained during boredom. Drawing is easy and simple - you just need to follow the ready-made geometry of the notebook - small squares. The sizes of the squares are very convenient - five by five millimeters. Regular school notebooks with a form factor of 205mm*165mm (height - twenty centimeters and five millimeters, width - sixteen centimeters and five millimeters) are perfect for drawing. In such notebooks, 1353 squares (one thousand three hundred fifty three) will be available for your creativity. But that is not all! IN Lately The so-called student notebook formats have become popular - according to the form-fatcore they have larger size which is almost equal album sheet A4. The exact dimensions of such a student notebook are twenty-eight centimeters high and twenty centimeters five millimeters wide! Accordingly, the area of the canvas is five hundred seventy-four centimeters or two thousand two hundred and ninety-six squares for drawing! If this is not enough for you, you can go to professional level. Let me explain what I mean: there are much larger canvases for drawing in cells - these are the so-called graph paper. Graph paper - or as it is also called, “scale-coordinate drawing paper» is a professional profile paper for creating precise graphs, maps, and drawing details. The nominal cross-section of graph paper is one millimeter! There are also lines indicating the sides of a square of five millimeters and one centimeter; they stand out against the general background by the thickness of the line. A small disadvantage of graph paper is that it is usually not white, but greenish or reddish. However, when coloring with colored pens this will not be a problem - everything will be in color anyway. In a word, if you are an avid fan of drawing in cells, graph paper will be a real discovery for you. It's practically drawing by pixels! Having chosen the format of a notebook sheet for drawing, you should also take care of other physical characteristics paper.

Among them, the most important are two indicators - density and whiteness. Density, for example, directly affects whether the pattern will be visible through or not. Agree, gaps are not very good. So - the optimal thickness of paper in a notebook for drawing is fifty-five grams per square meter(not less), if more is only good. Whiteness, that's saying in simple words- shade white. The optimal whiteness of paper is eighty-two to ninety-six percent. Here you should also understand - too white is not good, too dark is also bad. However, you shouldn’t worry about this, because most manufacturers make notebooks in the range of 82-96 percent, as stated in state standards for the production of notebooks.

How to paint the cells? As a rule, they paint with what is at hand - most often it is a simple ballpoint pen of blue color, or pencils - gray. But you must admit, painting with two colors is not very cool! Here a wide range of colored pens, pencils, markers, and crayons comes to our aid. You can buy them in any department of the office; prices are quite different and depend on the manufacturer, number of colors, brand, quality. In any case, the choice is very wide and you will definitely find something for yourself! What colored pens are the best for creativity - regular ballpoint, gel, capillary or oil? It is our firm belief that it is better to use ballpoint or oil-based pens for drawing in squares. Gel ones are of course very bright, but they have a big drawback - they smear on the paper, which can ultimately ruin the entire drawing. Capillary pens are very similar to felt-tip pens - they are also bright, but have another drawback - their ink is very strong and often saturates the sheet of paper. If possible, you should buy oil pens. They do not smudge, do not stain your hands, and glide very smoothly across the paper. Ideal for drawing by cells! If you are a fan of felt-tip pens, then also know that they are divided into two large subtypes: water-based and alcohol-based. Water-based markers are more common - and for good reason, because they are safer. Also, this type of markers has a very large selection of colors. One of the disadvantages is that they can get the paper wet. So this is not the best option for drawing. Another type is alcohol markers. Moving straight to the disadvantages, we note that they can also show through the paper and also have a very pungent alcohol smell. I doubt you'll like it! The third tool for coloring is pencils. Today they are divided into four large type- wooden colored pencils, watercolors, wax and plastic. Wooden pencils familiar to all of us since childhood, they are well suited for drawing in cells, but they have one big drawback - they often break. The other two types do not have this problem - wax and plastic, but their contours are thicker, which is not very good for drawing on graceful squares. And finally, watercolor pencils are the newest trend. Their peculiarity is that you first need to draw with a pencil, and then develop the drawing with a wet brush. With all the advantages watercolor pencils, we do not recommend using them for drawing on cells - there will be blotting and gaps. Thus, we can draw a small conclusion - it is best to draw on squares with oil pens! What brands of pens, pencils and markers are recommended to buy? So, a small rating: Handles - BIC Cristal, BIC Decor, BIC Orange, BIC 4 COLORS FASHION. Pencils - Koh-i-Noor, DERWENT, DALER ROWNEY, Faber Castell. Markers - Crayola, RenArt, Centropen. Crayons - Rowney Perfix, Blair No Odor Spray Fix, Melissa & Doug, Kite, Rainbow.

Happy creativity!
