The medal was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on October 28, 1974. The regulation on the medal was amended by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of July 18, 1980.

Medal regulations

Medal "For Distinction in military service" servicemen are awarded Soviet army, Navy, border and internal troops:

  • for excellent performance in combat and political training;
  • for special distinctions in exercises and maneuvers, during combat service and combat duty;
  • for courage, dedication and other merits shown during the period of military service.

The medal "For Distinction in Military Service" is awarded on behalf of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR by the Minister of Defense of the USSR, Minister of Internal Affairs of the USSR, Chairman of the Committee state security THE USSR.

The Medal "For Distinction in Military Service" consists of two degrees:

  • medal "For Distinction in Military Service" I degree;
  • Medal "For Distinction in Military Service" II degree

The highest degree of the medal is I degree.
Medal "For Distinction in Military Service" is worn on right side chest below the orders of the USSR. The ribbon for the medal on the common bar is placed after the ribbon for the medal "For the difference in protection state border THE USSR".

Medal description

Medal "For Distinction in Military Service" I degree is made of brass and has the shape of a convex five pointed star, in the intervals between the ends of which there are five shields with the emblems of the main types of troops. In the center of the medal is a profile image of a soldier, sailor and pilot, framed by a ring with the inscription "For Distinction in Military Service" and two laurel branches below. All images on the medal are convex. The reverse side of the medal has no images, only in the lower part of the reverse (at 6 o'clock on the dial) there is a small relief stamp of the Moscow mint in the form of three stylized letters "MMD".

The size of the medal between the opposite ends of the star is 38 mm.

The medal is connected with a brass shoe 29.5 mm wide and 27.5 mm high using an eyelet and a ring. The shoe is covered with a red silk moire ribbon with two longitudinal green stripes along the edges. The width of the tape is 24 mm, the strips are 3 mm, the distance of the strip from the edge is 3 mm. A brass five-pointed star is placed in the center of the block on the band. The shoe has a threaded pin with a nut on the reverse side for attaching the medal to clothing. The clamping nut with a diameter of 19 mm is stamped "MOSCOW MONETNY YARD" in embossed letters.

Medal "For Distinction in Military Service" II degree, its block and asterisk on the tape are made of cupronickel.

Medal history


The first awarded medal Private Anatoly Vasilyevich Spirin became "for distinction in military service" I degree. By order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR of March 24, 1975, he was awarded this award for courage and courage shown in the arrest of armed criminals. By order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR of March 3, 1976, the medal "For Distinction in Military Service" I degree was awarded to private Aiglov Pyotr Savelyevich for courage and dedication shown in the rescue of state material values from the fire.

The first mass awards with the medal "For Distinction in Military Service" II degree were made on the eve of the celebration of the Day of the Soviet Army in 1975. The Medal "For Distinction in Military Service" quickly became an award for warrant officers and warrant officers. Cases of awarding this medal to officers, and even more so to private and non-commissioned officers, occurred less frequently.

By the beginning of 1981, more than 3 thousand servicemen were awarded the medal "For Distinction in Military Service" I degree, and about 25 thousand servicemen were awarded the medal of the II degree. In 1985, medals of I and II degrees were awarded to about 5 thousand and about 40 thousand servicemen, respectively.

There are known cases of re-awarding a medal. For example, senior warrant officer Skrementov Valery Afanasyevich, who served in the railway troops, was awarded this medal three times. He was first awarded a medal of the second degree in accordance with the order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR No. 287 of December 23, 1982. In 1990, by order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR No. 9 of February 9, Skrementov was awarded the first degree of the medal. The last, third award, took place with another first degree of the medal, but after the collapse Soviet Union- by order of the Minister of Defense Russian Federation No. 11 dated January 17, 1995.

One of the last awards in the history of the USSR with this medal took place in accordance with the order of the Minister of Internal Affairs of the USSR No. 687ls of December 18, 1991. This order, among others, was awarded to Yuri Vasilievich Letunovsky. The medal was presented to him on April 2, 1992 in military unit 7427.

As of January 1, 1995, the medal "For Distinction in Military Service" of the 1st degree was awarded about 20 thousand awards, the medal of the II degree - about 120 thousand awards.

Based on the 1995 position, a medal could be received for a good and long work for the benefit of the state. The military service distinction has 3 grades:

  • 1st degree;
  • 2nd degree;
  • 3rd degree.

The 1st degree medal is awarded to military personnel who have served the state in good faith for 20 years.

The 2nd degree medal is awarded to servicemen who have faithfully served the state for 15 years.

The medal of the 3rd degree is awarded to military personnel who honestly served the state for 10 years.

The most important and important award for distinction in military service is the 1st degree. Commendation for conscientious work in military service is carried out from the third to the first. According to the rules, a soldier cannot be awarded the highest degree if he does not have a previous one.

Based on the 1995 position, the medal must be worn on the left side of the chest and placed in front of awards for impeccable service in the USSR Armed Forces. The new regulation did not say anything about where to wear the award.

What does a medal for distinction look like in military service?

According to the rules of the 2009 statute, a medal of the 1st degree must be silver and made of aluminum, the 2nd degree - gold from aluminum, and the 3rd degree - bronze in aluminum. Also, the award has a round shape, the width is 32 mm, there are convex sides on both sides. According to the rules of the 1995 regulation, awards were to be made of nickel silver, brass and brass with an enamel coating. The front part of the award, in 2009, as well as in 1995, is the same, that is, there is a relief shield in the center, and in the back there are two diagonally crossed arms, wings, as well as an anchor, around which a cable is twisted. In the center of the shield there is a figure that indicates the degree of the award. Below there is a relief engraving "For Distinction in Military Service". Behind the award, according to the rules of the 2009 regulation, in the center there is an embossed image of the coat of arms of the Armed Forces of Russia, along the edges there is a convex engraving. In the upper part - "Ministry of Defense", in the lower part - "Russian Federation". According to the rules of the 1995 regulation, there was an engraving in the center, which fit on 3 lines: "The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation." The top was filled with a raised ribbon design, and the bottom was filled with laurel leaves.

Each element of an award in military service for good service has its own meaning, some kind of symbolism:

3. The medal "For Distinction in Military Service" is awarded by order of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation in accordance with the procedure established by the Ministry of Defense.

Nominations for awarding the medal "For Distinction in Military Service" are sent to the Main Directorate of Personnel of the Ministry of Defense with a list of servicemen nominated for awarding the medal of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation "For Distinction in Military Service" (Appendix No. 1 to these Regulations), and a certificate of the number servicemen nominated for the medal of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation "For Distinction in Military Service" (Appendix No. 2 to these Regulations).
