Teacher: Guys, what did you hear in the suite? What is the nature of the work?

Students: The voice of a young narrator, tenderness, a picture of nature, magic Arabian night, mystery.

Teacher: That's right guys. And now I want to tell you a brief summary of the symphonic suite.
The symphonic suite “Scheherazade” was composed in 1888 based on the Arabian fairy tales “A Thousand and One Nights”. The oriental theme, so beloved by Russian composers since Glinka, was perfectly embodied in this work. The suite has four parts, which are united by a common artistic concept, fabulous character and musical images. Rimsky-Korsakov prefaced the work short program: “Sultan Shahriar, convinced of the treachery and infidelity of women, vowed to execute each of his wives after the first night; but Sultana Scheherazade saved her life by managing to keep him busy with fairy tales, telling them to him for 1001 nights, so that, prompted by curiosity, Shahriar constantly postponed her execution and finally completely abandoned his intention. Scheherazade told him many miracles, quoting poems from poets and words of songs, weaving a fairy tale into a fairy tale and a story into a story.” Initially, each part of the suite had its own name, but then the composer abandoned them: he did not want his work to be perceived only as a musical illustration of each of the plots, wanting the listener to feel the colorfulness of the oriental narrative with a kaleidoscope fairy tale images and miracles.

Besides Rimsky-Korsakov, there are many composers who turned to fairy tales. And today we will introduce you to the fabulous song by Yu. Chichkov to the words of M. Plyatskovsky “The Magic Flower”. Listen carefully, determine the character, and then we will learn everything together.

Great musical storyteller

“Wonderful miracle, wondrous wonder” - these words of one of the opera heroes perfectly characterize amazing person, composer, good WIZARD - Nikolai Alexandrovich Rimsky-Korsakov, who turns 180 this year.

Great musical storyteller

“A wonderful miracle, a wondrous wonder” - these words of one of the opera heroes perfectly characterize the amazing person, composer, good WIZARD - Nikolai Alexandrovich Rimsky-Korsakov, who turns 180 this year.

The images of a fairy tale accompany a person from the very beginning. early childhood, from the first lullabies and tales. Its emotional impact throughout life lays in the child’s soul the first concept of truth and falsehood, about Good fellows and Beautiful maidens, that good always triumphs over evil. The fairy tale combines ordinary life and a miracle. Good wizards become animals, birds, trees, any household items and, of course, fantastic creatures - all of them help the heroes go through various trials, defeat evil and achieve their desired goal. Next to the fairy tale live epics, legends, tales, rituals, songs - the whole diverse and beautiful, unreal and so close to us world, which stimulates our imagination, allows us to become an accomplice in these actions, and therefore a kind of co-creator of them, and perhaps the creator of new ones. this unheard of work.

This is how the formation of the future composer happened, who was born into an ordinary noble family, but grew up as an unusual, impressionable, sensitive and dreamy child. Everything around struck his imagination: nature, with its endless fields and meadows, rivers and lakes; and traces of ancient Novgorod architecture, “remains of antiquities in the form of numerous wall towers, church buildings, traces of archaic wall painting, dark faces of icons, the shine of jewelry, traditional earnest monastic singing, processions of the cross, bell ringing, many poetic stories of reality and creative fiction” and , of course, songs, games, rituals, which “were necessarily observed by many patriarchal families and their courtyard people”; and stories about the sea travels of his older brother, a naval officer - all this left its mark on the romantically minded young man, was absorbed, imprinted for years in the depths of his soul, in order to later pour out in the sounds of his works.

Not yet knowing his true purpose, Rimsky-Korsakov constantly improves himself in various fields of knowledge, philosophy, art, attends lectures, concerts, exhibitions, gets acquainted with outstanding people of its time. And he understands that he is devoting more and more time and energy to studying music, for which he had an attraction, “disposition and desire” from early childhood. After graduating from the St. Petersburg Naval Corps, Rimsky-Korsakov even committed trip around the world as a military officer, but after meeting the musicians of the New Russian School - “ Mighty bunch", he already feels a powerful need not just to make music, but the need to devote his entire life to HER - MUSIC. “There is something more that I can serve my Motherland.” And this is the “more” of his work.

From the biography of the composer “Chronicle of My Life” we learn that after the young composer tried himself in several genres and became known to the public, he compiled two collections of Russian folk songs, after which he finally settled on the desire to write music using Russian folklore. Like many “kuchkists,” he turned to historical topics, but the composer’s talent was looking for new ways, developing only his own, only his inherent understanding of history and culture. He was not alone in his desire. Many artists of the 19th century looked carefully and intently at folk art, searched and found wisdom and beauty in him. This is how the ballads of V.A. Zhukovsky, fairy tales and poems by A.S. Pushkin, paintings by V.M. Vasnetsov, M.A. Vrubel, N.K. Roerich, music by M.I. Glinka, A.P. Borodin and N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. And this is where the theme of FAIRY TALES arises in his work - it’s like an echo of the inner, so pure and fair spiritual world person. Two sides of it human life: one is ordinary, full of worries, joys, bright colors and drama, the other is a world of spiritualized nature, a world of an ideal, fabulous, unsteady, otherworldly, but also existing principle. And both of these sides of life are inseparably close to a person, only, having matured, a person does not want to notice either nature or a fairy tale, impoverishing his spiritual essence, reducing it to the level material needs. And what a blessing that there are people who remain true to the ideals of youth! Rimsky-Korsakov is one of them - a storyteller, a musical wizard, a sorcerer, whose sounds brought into our lives unforgettable moments of happiness in contact with a MIRACLE.

Fairy tales, epics, tales, legends - this is what he was always attracted to. In them (in fairy tales) not only space, but also time was animated, “humanized.” Spring-Red comes after Frost-Winter, but in due time it too will give way to Summer. From year to year this cycle takes place in nature, over which reigns the Yarilo-Sun, the source of life, heat and light. All our labor and rest distant ancestors was filled with the joy of being, involvement with each other and nature. “Pictures of ancient pagan times and its spirit seemed to me... with great clarity and attracted me with the charm of antiquity.” The famous opera "The Snow Maiden", written based on the play by A.N. Ostrovsky, is, as it were, complete picture life and everyday life pagan Rus', where a person coexists next to another sphere of life. And the operas “May Night” and “The Night Before Christmas,” created based on the works of N.V. Gogol, are full of “witchcraft, enchantment and at the same time deep human feelings that resist these forces, forcing them to submit to man.” And all the main arias characters, and the orchestral numbers, depicting the life and customs of that time, are imbued with such precise musical characteristics and folk melodies that you feel not like a listener and spectator, but a direct participant in all these actions, “a distant resident of those distant times.” Nikolai Alexandrovich turns to both epics and legends. One of them is an epic about the Novgorod singer-storyteller, guslar Sadko, who won the hearts of not only people, but also fantastic creatures- Princess Volkhova, King of the Sea. Brave, resourceful, but at the same time loyal, loving and reliable, he attracts both the townspeople and fairy tale characters, and they all happily serve him and “make friends with him.” The composer is so immersed in the world of legends that his entire opera is imbued with exactly the flavor that the epic tells about. He finds ancient chants to characterize Sadko, writes himself such melodic turns that are indistinguishable by ear from original Russian folk songs, and of course, the most bright moments, like a person who knows the sea very well, sound in his orchestral parts, depicting either the Sea King in his underwater kingdom, or Princess Volkhova, or goldfish, or a storm at sea. But, the main thing that the composer himself draws attention to is the idea that art, and in particular music, is great power, to which even the forces of nature and mythical creatures. Rimsky-Korsakov has two more operas written on the plot of fairy tales by A.S. Pushkin.

The first of them, “The Tale of Tsar Saltan,” belongs to the most interesting discoveries composer in the field of opera orchestration and interweaving of leitmotifs ( musical characteristics heroes), in orchestral and solo-ensemble scores. And one more very interesting point- only here in this fairy tale-opera, the fairy-tale maiden Swan Princess, having fallen in love with a person, turns into a girl and becomes the wife of her chosen one. This shows the influence of beauty human feeling– Love, fairy-tale characters and “humanization” ideal image to a real image, but at a higher quality level. The second fairy tale based on the plot of A.S. Pushkin is the opera “The Golden Cockerel”, last piece composer, with the subtitle “Fairy Tales in Faces”. It combines a witty plot solution, exquisite musical characteristics, dazzlingly bright orchestration and expressiveness vocal parts, deliberate confusion and confusion of heroes, fabulousness and reality. All this is expressed in the words of the Astrologer: “The fairy tale is a lie - but there is a hint in it, good fellows lesson,” and in the epilogue he says: “Was it only me and the queen who were living faces here, the rest were delirium, a dream, a pale ghost, emptiness.” A lot was written about this opera at that time in the early 20th century. During the period of revolutionary unrest in Russia, of course, it was perceived as “a satire on autocracy and a call for rebellion.” But, it seems to me, like any fairy tale, myth, legend, we need to consider this idea more deeply, at least from the perspective of our time. And the cry of the Cockerel is “Beware, be on the alert!” - this is a call to us, about which one could philosophize, but not on the pages of this article. Nikolai Alexandrovich also had opera-fairy tales: “Kashchei the Immortal”, “The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia”; Symphonic musical fairy tales were also written: the Antar suite and the famous Scheherazade suite based on the tales of the Arabian Nights.

But Rimsky-Korsakov was a real WIZARD not only in his work, but also in life. He worked very hard both as a teacher and as a conductor: at first Free School of Music, “music choirs” of the maritime department, then the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he worked as a professor for 30 years, and the Court Singing Chapel. He tried himself in all musical genres: these are symphonies and symphonic paintings, and romances, and works for piano and other instruments solo and with orchestra, and chamber ensembles, and a cappella choirs, and arrangements of folk songs, and the composer’s most favorite genre – opera. He also sincerely helped his students, colleagues and friends in every way he could. After his musical brothers M.P. Mussorgsky and A.P. Borodin passed away one after another, Rimsky-Korsakov spent 3-4 years working only on their works: finishing, putting in order what had already been written, orchestrating, publishing , performed works by these outstanding composers. You are surprised how, with such intense labor, creative and public life(and also a family, five children) you can maintain this youthful sparkle in your eyes and this sparkling, overflowing imagination and desire to write fairy tales. Remember, in one of the fairy tales the hero says: “I’m not a Wizard, I’m just learning. But Love in life makes real Miracles.” The love of this great man for music, art, for the Motherland, for friends and family, his great burning with true delight and admiration for all the Beautiful Heart - this is the inexhaustible source thanks to which we can enjoy the wonders of his creativity.
