Subjective selection of the best programs for the mobile Internet
Internet addiction, which is written about with enviable regularity in newspapers, fortunately, is not an official diagnosis. Moreover, the vast majority of psychologists prefer this topic once again don’t touch it - because there seems to be an addiction, but there seems to be no harm from it.

In fact, ask any person who seems to be “always on the Internet” how many sites they are constantly on. The answer is surprising: just a few services, mail, ICQ and a couple of news sites - that’s all, this is where the daily ritual of visiting the Internet ends. The main thing for them is a constantly connected ICQ, the ability to check their email at any time, write a few words on Twitter or a couple of paragraphs on LiveJournal. Well, exchange a few words with your VKontakte friends.

It’s good that nowadays you don’t need to constantly sit at a table in front of a computer to do this - you just need to configure your smartphone correctly. But usually things don’t go beyond mobile ICQ for some reason. Well, mail, at the most.

And, by the way, in vain. All modern blogs, social media, news aggregators and other services provide direct and easy access to their content. Some - using lightweight versions of web pages, some - using special programs. The second method, moreover, is much preferable - it allows you to significantly save traffic, because it only loads content, and not beautiful icons and other things of little use on the screen mobile phone graphics.

As an example, let's take a few of the most necessary services. Let them be, of course, the usual ICQ, blogs on LiveJournal, microblogs on Twitter, the most convenient RSS reader in the world, Google Reader, photo storage services Flickr, Picasa and Yandex.Photos, social networks Odnoklassniki, Vkontakte and Facebook.

Important Note

Please note that the article is based solely on the personal subjective preferences of a fastidious author who has tried all existing mobile platforms.

MICROBLOGING: TWITTER

Popularity of the service in Russia - 1/5

Difficulty of use -2/5

Traffic costs per session are less than 100 KB

Twitter is a relatively new thing, only a couple of years old. This is a blog consisting of short messages- no more than 140 characters long. Its fundamental difference from LiveJournal and others is the telegraph-note format. Usually these are short situational notes - where someone saw, thought, did, etc. Well, mobile photos - of course. Due to the format, most of messages and photos are sent from mobile devices- using special programs or even regular SMS.

Symbian S60

To work with Twitter on Symbian, you can use a standard browser - at m.twitter.com there is a lightweight mobile version of the message feed. But it is much more convenient to use a special program - Gravity. The program is unique in that it actually costs the three hundred rubles that are asked for it. From an interface point of view, it’s as simple as five kopecks, but it contains all the features that Twitter has: from searching by keywords to downloading just photos taken in Internet. Moreover, in my subjective opinion, this is generally best program for Symbian - in terms of interface quality.

It's funny that there are simply no real alternatives to this program. The closest competitor is the Java midlet Twibble.

iPhone/iPod

There are a lot of programs for working with Twitter on the iPhone. With a simple search on the AppStore, I counted seven, and these were clearly not all. They differ very little - in the color of the interface and the location of the menu. Their functionality is approximately the same. A more fundamental difference between paid and free versions of the same programs: free ones show banners, while paid ones, accordingly, do not.

Windows Mobile

Amazing - out of thousands and millions of the most different programs I couldn't find a single decent client for working with Twitter for Windows Mobile. The only software you can use is the free Twikini. But the spartan interface and half-screen-sized avatars did not cause me to feel bouts of emotion and joy. However, you will have to be content with this. Thus, we have to admit that the Microsoft platform is categorically unsuitable for microblogging. I am disappointed.

Google Android

For the youngest platform in the review, Twitter on Android is doing very, very well. There is a simple one, but more than convenient free program Twidroid. In principle, nothing else is needed besides it. However, HTC Hero, the most correct Google phone on domestic market, equipped with a special widget for sending messages to Twitter. And pictures can be downloaded directly from the camera interface.

BLOGS: LIVEJOURNAL

Popularity of the service in Russia - 3/5

Difficulty of use - 4/5

Traffic costs per session - 500 KB - 1 MB

It’s worth saying right away that LiveJournal is not the most “mobile” service. It only has a mobile version of m.livejournal.com - there you can read and comment on your friend’s feed. There are several other services - for example, you can write a blog by sending messages via e-mail, - but they are either low-functional and complex, or are available only to owners of paid accounts.

Maybe you will laugh - but Symbian and LiveJournal are practically incompatible. In addition to the already mentioned mobile version of the blog, there is only one program, LJ2ME, and it is written in Java. This makes it almost impossible to use. Another MobiTile program - it looks tempting, but it just doesn't work yet.

Windows Mobile

For reasons already stated, WM programs for LiveJournal can only send posts - it is impossible to read a friend’s feed through them. The best option here would be LJ Mobile - a simple program with which you can send blog posts and upload pictures there - but only if you have a paid or upgraded account. Not much - but thanks for that.

iPhone/iPod

The most functional program for working with LiveJournal, naturally, lives on the Apple platform. It's called LiveJournal, and in addition to sending posts and pictures, it can also read personal messages. Fortunately, the program is free, but it doesn’t show ads, why? thanks a lot developer. Who, by the way, is our compatriot.

Google Android

The situation is identical - you cannot read LJ through the program, but you can send posts. The free program SK-Livejournal is used for this. Also, by the way, made in Russia. In addition to her, there is a nice client ElJay, whose development plans include a function for reading friend feeds. Whether it appears or not, we'll see, but the news itself is very encouraging. Both programs can be installed through the Android Market.

PICTURES: FLICKR, PICASA, YANDEX.PHOTOS

Popularity of services in Russia - 3/5

Difficulty of use - 2/5

Traffic costs for a photo - from 300 KB to 1 MB

Millions of people upload tons of photos to the Internet every day. I probably won’t be too far wrong if I say that almost everyone does this, like sex. The main services are Google Picasa, Flickr and domestic Yandex.Photos.

Symbian, for some time, is ahead of the curve - the built-in Share Online client allows you to upload photos directly from the camera interface. True, only in Flicker and Ovi by Nokia. For the rest, additional software is required - for example, the universal Shozu client. If you use the more familiar Yandex, grab a special program for uploading photos to Yandex.Photos. In addition to batch uploading files to the server, it can change their sizes and set geotags. Naturally, everything is completely free.

Windows Mobile

WM is not particularly diverse in this area. Standard options for uploading photos to operating system no, so you need to install special software. Probably one of the most simple ways will become the Shozu program. It allows you to upload photos to Flickr and Picasa. Also for Windows Mobile there is the Yandex.Photos program - similar to Symbian and iPhone.

iPhone/iPod

There are many paid programs for working with photos in the AppStore. But there are only two free ones - PixUp works with Flickr, Picasa and Facebook, Yandex.Fotki - naturally, with Yandex.Fotki. The list of features is standard - changing sizes, setting names and geotags. Everything works easily and naturally - and I don’t see much point in paying for complex software.

Google Android

In Android, almost all services for working with images are included initially. Directly from the camera, you can upload pictures to Flickr or Picasa, send them to Twitter or email. In principle, nothing more is needed. And Yandex fans, this time, are less fortunate - all that remains is to upload photos via mobile version sitem.fotki.yandex.ru.

INSTANT MESSAGES: ICQ/MSN/JABBER

Popularity of the service in Russia - 5/5

Difficulty of use - 1/5

Traffic costs per session - from 50 KB

The most popular instant messaging network in Russia is ICQ. People abroad don’t know about ICQ and use MSN Messenger. Many people use both and also keep a backup Jabber account. Accordingly, everyone’s needs are different. For the first, a regular JIMM will suffice; for the second, give a multi-network client that will work with one network and connect another.

If you need just ICQ, it's simple. There is a free domestic client with the strange name BayanICQ, which works stably and quickly - but it is not recommended to install alpha versions. In the near future, the developer promises to add support for other protocols - Jabber and others. The second option is Mobile Agent, a new creation after Smapera, which has a bunch of features, clients, maps, informers and much more. Although some functions do not yet work at the moment ( all-seeing eye), and some are still missing (global search), but the program does not stand still and is developing very quickly. It has a very beautiful and more or less user-friendly interface. The third option is QIP, a program with a strange interface but decent functionality. Choose what suits your taste best.

But if you connect Jabber and MSN, everything becomes much more complicated. Free fancy software like Palringo or Nimbuzz either has a strange interface - in the first case, or does not save history - in both. The only acceptable option is IM+, but the program is paid. And not the cheapest - it costs almost $30. On the other hand, you have to pay for convenience.

Windows Mobile

ICQ on Windows Mobile probably exists in fifty different incarnations. This, for example, is one of the few platforms for which there is an official client from the developer of ICQ itself. True, no one uses it, but that doesn’t even matter.

The most correct ICQ on Windows Mobile, in my opinion, is the domestic free client Pigeon. In addition to ICQ itself, it can also use Jabber. The program is very well controlled with your fingers, supports skins and other nice little things. In my opinion - the best option.

As an alternative, we can offer, again, the ubiquitous QIP, or the bourgeois BeejiveIM. The latter is in beta version and is therefore completely free. In addition to ICQ, the program can work with the Google Talk and MSN networks.

iPhone/iPod

Surprisingly, everything is not particularly good with ICQ here. There is the already mentioned Palringo, which does not save history and displays advertising, there is Nimbuzz, which does not always work correctly with the Russian language and also does not save history - and there are two versions of IM+. The free one shows banners, and only works in the background for an hour. The paid version lacks these conventions, but costs $10. In my opinion, the choice is between Palringo and IM+. The rest is not worth your attention.

Google Android

But here everything is very simple. There is a wonderful thing - Meebo. This is a completely free program that supports all existing instant messaging networks, stores message history on the server (sic!), works in the background, and is generally convenient and useful in every way. The only drawback is the overly simple interface and the inability to view contact profiles. Otherwise, everything is perfect.

Windows Mobile

iPhone/iPod

There are an awful lot of news readers on the iPhone, but most of them are paid. Or they show banners - which is annoying. One of the few free and ad-free options is NetNewsWire, which syncs with Google Reader but doesn't allow you to manually add feeds. Another option is Free RSS Reader, which can add news feeds from Google Reader, and can itself find them on sites. True, in the free version you can automatically add only three feeds, the rest will have to be completed manually. But this, in my opinion, is not scary.

Google Android

Reading RSS feeds on Android is not easy, but very simple. You only need one free program - NewsRob, which will download all feeds from Google Reader and put them on a memory card. Strictly speaking, that's all - the settings are completed, you can read.

INTERNET IN JAVA

Reached an unprecedented level and that's it large quantity people use a tablet or smartphone to access World Wide Web. Today, mobile operators provide their subscribers with Internet at a speed comparable to wired access. Tariffs are becoming cheaper and unlimited Internet costs several hundred rubles a month.

There are no hopeless situations

But sometimes, often at a very inopportune moment, when you urgently need access to the network, the money in your account runs out. Or, for example, you went to another region or country where roaming tariffs apply and it’s worth accessing the Internet big money. What to do? Is it possible to use the Internet for free? Read how you can do this on Android without having a penny in your account.

Ask a friend

The first thing you can do is ask friends who have money in their accounts to share their traffic. How? If they own smartphones, then they can use the wireless access point mode. On our website we published articles on how to distribute Wi-Fi from Android and iPad, you can find all the details in them.

Let us briefly recall the essence of the process. On Android, turn on Settings - Wireless networks - More - Modem mode - Wi-Fi hotspot. On iOS - Settings - cellular- Cellular data - Modem mode. Ask for your password and connect to . If your friends don’t have a smartphone, you can borrow a SIM card for a while. Don't forget to thank your saviors later.

Public hotspot

In many in public places(for example, in shops, train stations, squares, cafes, restaurants and bars) a free hotspot is installed. For the sake of decency, you can make a small order, for example, a cup of coffee or tea, and at the same time surf the Internet via your tablet. In some cases, the network is password-protected to prevent people from using it on the street. You can ask the waiter or bartender for the access code. Some owners don't bother setting a password and everything is left open to everyone. In this case, it is not even necessary to place an order; you can use the free network on the street. Well, if you are somewhere near the station, just come in and use it.

Applications for finding free hotspots

If you are in unfamiliar city and you don’t know where you can find an access point or don’t want to run around looking for the coveted sign, you can use programs that contain a database of public hotspots.

One of the best of its kind is osmino Wi-Fi. The application contains a database of more than 20 million points in 50 countries. All access points are plotted on a map, so you'll know exactly where they are located. The database, which was created by the users themselves, can be downloaded to the device’s memory. The Augmented Reality feature allows you to instantly find hotspots around you. You can make notes on the map. The program does not require internet to operate.

After entering the program menu, the Android tablet will scan the airwaves for the presence of Wi-Fi networks. If an access point is detected nearby, the device will connect to it automatically.

Hack a neighbor

The last option is not the most reliable and honest, but it has a right to exist. You can try with special program to a Wi-Fi network. This can be done if the owner does not bother to come up with a complex password. One of the most popular Android programs that hack wireless Internet networks is WIBR. The database of the most popular passwords is sorted through the program's memory, and if one of them matches, you can connect. But, again, we urge you to be prudent.

Conclusion

As you can see, it is quite possible to use free internet on Android. The most reliable option in an unfamiliar place is using the osmino Wi-Fi program. Unless you go to a deserted island, you can find a place to access the global network for free in almost any city in the world.

Introduction Today, the Internet is used on various devices, from phones to televisions. Most people have a high-speed connection at home and a Wi-Fi router that can distribute the Internet to all devices in the house. But sometimes it happens that the signal disappears somewhere, the router breaks down, the line breaks, or they simply forgot to pay. And here you also urgently need to use the information in

A modern smartphone can theoretically be used without an Internet connection. But in this case, in terms of functionality, it will not be far from the simplest push-button mobile phone. Therefore, we recommend that you connect to the Internet using our guide. And you don't have to deposit money into your account - in the article you will find instructions on connecting to public Wi-Fi networks.

If you are just going to buy a smartphone, be sure to pay attention to its characteristics. The fact is that different models have at different speeds data transmission. It is rarely written in numbers - instead, the supported communication standards are indicated in the characteristics. Here is a list of them in order of increasing speed:

  • GPRS;
  • EDGE;
  • 3G;
  • 4G (LTE);
  • LTE Advance.

Focus on this point in the specifications if access to the Internet is very important for you. Also remember that not all operators have 4G equipment in absolutely every big city our country. And there’s nothing to say about towns and villages - a 3G smartphone will do just fine in them.

You can also pay attention to the supported Wi-Fi standard. In the vast majority of cases, we transfer data via WiFi 802.11n. But in Lately Routers that support the standard are becoming increasingly popular 802.11ac, providing a very high speed of receiving and transmitting information. If you plan to install such a router in the near future, then it is advisable to purchase a device that is capable of working with the above-mentioned Wi-Fi standard. However, this is not at all necessary.

Setting up a Wi-Fi network

But enough talk about theory. It's time to talk about how to set up the Internet on Android. You should start by setting up Wi-Fi. This is usually where novice users have problems, since this process is almost not automated. Note that the easiest way is to connect to your own router. It’s a little more difficult to do this with friends, at work, or somewhere else. So, you should do the following:

Step 1. Go to " Settings" If the corresponding icon is not in the notification panel, then find it in the menu.

Step 2. Go to the section " WiFi" On some devices there is a switch next to it. It needs to be switched to the on position.

Step 3. If there is a checkbox in this section, then activate it.

Step 4. Now click on the name of the one Wi-Fi networks, with which you want to turn on the Internet on Android.

Step 5. If the network is protected, then enter the password for it. For greater convenience, you can check the box next to “ Show password" When you are finished entering your password, click on the “ To plug».

That's all. Now your smartphone has remembered this network and will connect to it automatically. It’s the same with public networks - if you’ve already connected to one, then in the future this place your device will connect to it independently. Although there are exceptions.

Using WPS

You can connect to your friends' Wi-Fi using another method. It consists of pressing the WPS button on the router. This allows you not to enter a password and network name. But first, you also need to press the WPS button on your smartphone or tablet - in in this case not physical, but virtual. This is done as follows:

Step 1. Go to " Settings».

Step 2. Go to the section we have already mentioned “ WiFi».

Step 3. Activate the switch if necessary. Then click on the button Options" On many devices it is made in the form of a vertical ellipsis and is located in the upper right corner.

Step 4. Click on the item " Additional functions" On some gadgets this step is skipped, since the item “ WPS» is located directly in the context menu.

Step 5. Click on the item " WPS button».

After this, the smartphone will connect to the network distributed by the router, as a result of which you will be able to access the Internet.

Setting up GPRS, EDGE, 3G and 4G

Setting up mobile Internet makes everything easier and more difficult at the same time. Usually, the user does not need to delve into the settings at all - telecom operators send a special file that automatically enters all the parameters. This does not happen only in the most extreme cases - when your model of smartphone or tablet is not in the operator’s database. But believe me, these databases are so extensive that all sorts of Chinese nonnames can’t be found there. If you are unlucky, you will have to configure Internet access manually. This is done on Android as follows:

Step 1. Go to " Settings", as you did earlier.

Step 2. Go to the section " Other networks" On some smartphones and tablets it may be called " Other networks" or " More“- it all depends on the translation.

Step 3. Here you need to click on the item “ Mobile networks».

Step 4. Then everything depends on the specific implementation. software. On some devices you will be taken to a menu like the one shown in the screenshot below. In this case, you need to open the item “ Access Points (APN)" In other models, the corresponding settings may immediately open.

Step 5. Be that as it may, you need to add your operator's access point if these parameters did not arrive after you inserted the SIM card. In our case, this is done by pressing the button with a plus sign.

Step 6. After clicking the corresponding button, you will see many fields. First of all, pay attention to the points “ Authentication type" (may also be called " authentication type") And " APN type"(on older devices it is called " Access point type»).

Step 7 In the first paragraph, you must select “PAP”. This type of authentication is used by the vast majority of cellular operators around the world.

Step 8 In the second field we enter manually “ default, supl" - without quotes and spaces, as in the following screenshot. Click the button OK».

Step 10 Finally, click on the item " APN" or " Access point" Enter your operator's specific Internet address here:

  • MTS - internet.mts.ru
  • MegaFon - internet
  • Beeline - internet.beeline.ru
  • TELE2 - internet.tele2.ru

  • MTS - mts and mts
  • MegaFon - gdata and gdata
  • Beeline - beeline and beeline
  • TELE2 - both fields are empty

If you use the services of some smaller telecom operator, then you can find out its settings by visiting the official website. You can also call the call center - they will definitely dictate your APN, username, and password.

Summarizing

As you understand, configure Mobile Internet possible without any difficulty. This is done almost easier than on old push-button phones. Fortunately, with current technologies you need to bother with this in very rare cases.
