Do-it-yourself paintings for drawing by numbers. Painting by numbers on canvas and cardboard: an overview of manufacturers, practical advice for beginners. Preparation of materials and tools

Man created the very first paintings in the Stone Age. The ancient people believed that their drawings would bring them good luck on the hunt, and maybe they were not so wrong, because today there are plots that we embroider or color in, we hope (and maybe not just like that, because there are special techniques for visualizing desires ) that the image of a couple in love will make family life even happier, and a landscape with a house on a hill will speed up the purchase of your own apartment or summer cottage.

And, even if, the omen suddenly does not come true, calm, cozy hours spent alone with art, and a picture created by your own hands, will remain with you forever. Moreover, your work can be a wonderful exclusive gift for friends or family.

In retail and online stores, you can find many varieties of paintings that are intended for coloring. However, in fact there are only 2 of them:

  • paintings by numbers - a drawing is applied to the base, divided into numbered small or large fragments, and the smaller these fragments are, the more vivid and realistic the image will be.
  • paintings for painting along the contours are more complex, only the contours of the drawing are applied to the base, and you are invited to choose colors, create transitions of light and shadow, and detail the image.

Both there and there, complete with the base - cardboard, canvas, wood or (for a stained-glass picture) glass, there are paints, brushes, as well as a special sheet of cheat sheet - a copy of the contours applied to the base with or without numbers.

Advice: start working on the picture from the upper left corner, so as not to touch the already painted areas, paint colors from light to dark - even if suddenly light paint "creeps out" to the adjacent dark fragment, you can easily paint over it with dark paint

How do paintings by numbers differ from each other?

1. The base on which the contours are applied

  • cardboard is perhaps the most common option. Paints easily and evenly fall on cardboard, it keeps its shape and does not absorb excess paint, ideal for beginners and children, you can arrange a picture on cardboard in a frame yourself, without going to a framing workshop;
  • canvas - due to its porous surface, even on a primed canvas, smears of paint fall non-uniformly, which gives the picture a more interesting, professional look and the feeling of creating a picture on canvas, believe me, they are radically different from working on cardboard;
  • wood - paintings by numbers based on wood appeared relatively recently, and are still very rare, they look very impressive and unusual, but the paintings themselves, of course, will be heavier than those made on canvas or cardboard.

2. Type of packaging for paints

Acrylic paints are used in all kits for painting by numbers - they are bright, safe, lightfast enough and odorless, dry quickly, they are very convenient to use: the thickness of the paint can be easily adjusted with water. Due to the peculiarities of the composition, non-dried paints can be easily washed off from hands, brushes and various surfaces.

In the overwhelming majority of cases, small plastic jars with tight lids are used to pack paints.

Advice: keep open only the colors you are using right now, after completing the work, close the jar tightly to prevent the paints from drying out.

The paint by number manufacturer HOBBART differs from the rest in terms of paint packaging, Hobbart kits use paints in tubes. Due to such packaging, paints are stored longer and do not change their structure both before use and when opened. Tightly screw-on cap prevents drying out. The empty jars in the HOBBART kits are included, and they can hold exactly the amount of paint from the tube that you need today and now.

3. Possibility of mixing paints or lack thereof

For those who want to feel like a real artist, restore their former skills in working with brushes and paints, or practice additionally, the creators of paintings by numbers offer sets with mixing paints.

If in the sets: Schipper, Plaid, HOBBART there are all ready-to-use jars of colors that will be required to create a masterpiece, then the Dimensions and Sonnet brands make it possible to independently create new colors for some areas of the picture, while they only advise which paint numbers to mix for a given area, the final decision to take the recommended proportions of paints or to make the area darker and lighter is yours!

Advice: if the picture is made in light colors, and the numbers on the basis shine through them, you can paint over them

  • use the Uni Click Correct pen-corrector with a fine tip - do not paint over too many numbers at a time, if something distracts from work, you will have to spend time later to find on the special sheet included in the kit - copies of the base which numbers were painted over on these sites
  • apply a second coat of paint, after the first has dried

4. The degree of detail of the image, it is the same degree of complexity

A high degree of detail makes the picture more realistic, lively, however, it must be borne in mind that it involves painting over very small elements and the numbers on them will also be small. Therefore, such pictures are suitable for people with good eyesight or require special tools, for example, magnifying lamps.

You will find the most highly detailed pictures at Plaid.

For the rest of the producers, you need to look at the plot itself; for beginners and children, something that is painted over with rather large areas is suitable - plots in which there is a lot of greenery, a lot of sea, sky or large figures.

5. Dimensions

Sizes come in all sizes, from postcard-sized paint-by-number to truly imposing canvases. The optimal and most popular size is considered to be 40 × 50 cm. In some cases, manufacturers release paintings that are slightly larger than the standard size, for example, not 40 × 50, but 41 × 51, in this case it must be remembered that in order to place the picture in a frame for a size of 40 × 50, you will have to cut its edges.

Advice: rinse tools that come into contact with paint, wash your hands and wipe the work surface as soon as you decide to take a break from working on a painting

6. Number of parts

Do not be surprised at the number of parts. Of course, the most familiar to our eyes are paintings consisting of one base (part) framed in a frame.

However, the more interesting and unusual the paintings look, with one, as it were, divided into parts of the plot and being a continuation of each other or with similar, similar plots.

Exists:

  • diptychs (two paintings side by side);
  • triptychs (three paintings side by side);
  • polyptychs (more than three paintings located next to each other) you see just such a coffee-theme polyptych above.

7. Plots

Do you like delicate cherry blossoms or a lush bouquet of peonies, a colorful view of the Eiffel Tower or the picturesque canals of Venice, are you closer to independent cats, loyal dogs or proud eagles? There are a great many plots for every taste.

When choosing a plot, it is worth thinking about how the colors of the picture will look in the interior, in which room and where exactly you want to hang it.

Advice: After completing the picture, look at it, perhaps in the windows of the house you do not have enough more carefully traced frames, and on the flower petals - dew drops? Maybe the graceful scarf on the girl's neck will sparkle with new colors, if a little sparkle of a suitable color is poured onto a still wet layer of paint, or the background should be shaded to highlight individual elements of the picture? Experiment!

Whatever painting by numbers you choose, we can say for sure: creating a painting with your own hands will help you escape from everyday worries and will delight you with the magical transformation of a white base with black outlines into a multi-colored masterpiece.

Pictures - Color by Number

This is a very exciting activity .. drawing ..

You can paint a picture of a famous artist yourself!

It is called - paintings-coloring pages on numbers..

Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted On the Terrace in 1881,

it is painted in oil on canvas. The painting depicts how, on a beautiful spring day, mother and daughter are sitting on the terrace and enjoying the fresh air. They are dressed in colorful outfits to be as beautiful as the nature around them.

How to draw pictures

  • It is very easy to start drawing by numbers. All that is required from a novice artist is to paint over areas in the picture with paint with the corresponding number on the jar.
  • In addition, you can apply the paint in 2-3 coats, letting the previous coat dry. In this case, the colors will be more saturated. If you need to find out the number of the area that you have already painted over, you should refer to the check sheet.
  • Also note that too small details in such colorings are indicated by numbers with extension lines, since the numbers may not always fit in the designated field.
  • For ease of drawing, use an easel.

Painting technique by numbers

Of course, the first time you paint, a lot of questions will arise: with which numbers to start, from which corner of the picture should you start painting, with which tones (light or dark), how to make brush strokes and which brush. Unfortunately, and maybe for someone and fortunately, there is no definite answer to all these questions. Coloring, like drawing, is an individual process., everyone finds their own only correct path.

This is the special charm of creativity: you have to find your own style of drawing on your own, getting the maximum of positive emotions from this creative process. We have done all the preparatory work for you: canvases, stretchers, cardboards, contours, brushes, mixing paints. Everything else is the very process from which you should get satisfaction.

Difficulty level selection

The difficulty level of coloring is indicated by numbers-stars - from one to four (five stars for triple pictures of the same triptych plot). Accordingly, the more stars there are, the more contours (details) and numbers with extension lines the coloring contains, the more time it will take to color it.

Use of paints

Acrylic paints used for painting dry quickly enough, but it still takes some time (1-2 minutes) for the previous layer to dry. Such paints can be stored in a closed container for several months or even years. But if you open the can and use paint, the shelf life, of course, is significantly reduced. In addition, it is worth paying attention: dried acrylic paint should not be diluted with anything.

To prevent drying, close the paint can tightly after each use. It is also worth cleaning the edges of the jar and lids every time if traces of dried paint appear on them: they can break the tightness of the package. If possible, you should paint over all areas with one number before moving on to others. Thus, you do not have to frequently open all the paints, which will prevent them from drying out prematurely.

Brush selection

Use round brushes to draw details, and use flat brushes to paint over large areas of the background or varnish an already finished picture. When changing from one color of paint to another, rinse the brush well in water and blot it with a paper or cloth to prevent water droplets from getting into the paint. If you have been painting with one color for a long time, it is also recommended to rinse the brush every 5 minutes so that the paint does not dry at the base of the brush. Do not leave the brush unwashed if you take a break from painting - dried paint will make the brush unusable. In this case, the brushes will serve you as long as possible.

What to choose? Canvas or cardboard

There is no definite answer in choosing between canvas and cardboard. Cardboard is cheaper, canvas is much more interesting in terms of creativity. It is easier for beginners to draw on cardboard - paints fit better due to less graininess. In addition, cardboard-based paintings can easily fit into a standard thin photo frame from a store, while canvas requires a more voluminous and expensive frame.

Without a frame on the wall, the painting (based on cardboard) looks somewhat unfinished and may buckle over time due to changes in humidity. In contrast to the canvas, which is already taut on a stretcher, therefore it is less susceptible to the influence of fluctuations in humidity. A picture on canvas without a frame is more voluminous due to the thickness of the stretcher, it can be hung like that. But most importantly, when painting on a real canvas, you get a distinct feeling that you are a Real Artist with a capital letter!

Varnishing

As a rule, you do not need to varnish an acrylic painting. Therefore, it is not included in the set, and is purchased as an additional accessory. However, matte acrylic varnish will help keep the colors of the painting vivid for longer, especially if it is in a brightly lit area or in direct sunlight. However, it will not shine. Glossy acrylic varnish, on the other hand, will add shine to the picture, if you need it and suits the illumination of the place in the interior.

Frame selection

Do you want to feel like a real artist, but you don't have a natural talent in this area? Buy inexpensive paintings (coloring) by numbers on canvas in our online store: they will allow you to paint real masterpieces, having any level of artistic background. The catalog contains a huge selection of goods for creativity in the size 40x50 cm.

Coloring is as follows: on each numbered area of the picture, a certain color is applied according to the number. Typically, permanent acrylic paints are used in canvas painting kits. In this case, mixing different shades is not required, so the work is not particularly difficult.

Images printed on canvas look the most effective. In the finished version, they represent a complete picture, which, thanks to the stretcher and fasteners, can be hung on the wall. It can also be presented as a handmade gift.
