Maya's friend, the future famous opera singer Galina Kareva, suggested that she leave the institute and devote herself to singing, but Maya could not decide on such a radical step.

In 1955, Maya Kristalinskaya graduated from the institute. Together with their friend Valya Kotelkina, they were assigned to Novosibirsk, to the Chkalov plant. The girls found themselves in completely unfamiliar conditions, for ten to twelve hours a day they had to work in a dirty workshop, "giving out" parts. They could not stand it for a long time and after a while they decided to flee to Moscow. It was a crime in those days. The Novosibirsk plant sent a petition to Moscow to prosecute them for unauthorized abandonment of their place of work. It was only through connections that they managed to avoid trouble. On an acquaintance, they got a job at the Yakovlev Aviation Design Bureau.

Maya continued to take part in amateur performances in the pop ensemble of the Central House of Artists. In 1957, the World Festival of Youth and Students was held in Moscow. Kristalinskaya was invited to the jazz ensemble of the First Step studio at the Central House of Arts. As part of the ensemble, Maya took part in many performances, concerts and shows. Soon the newspaper "Soviet Culture" published a devastating article "Musical dudes" criticizing the youth orchestra "First Step". The customer of the article was the country's main jazzman A. Tsfasman, who saw his competitors in the youth orchestra. Soon there were "organizational conclusions", and the studio "First Step" ceased to exist.

Kristalinskaya toured the country a lot with jazz orchestras, released many records with songs that were instantly sold out. She received wide recognition after the release of the film "Thirst", in which Maya sang the song "You and I are two shores." The record with this song has sold seven million copies throughout the country. The singer was the first to perform Bulat Okudzhava's song "Ah, Arbat", which had previously only been heard on tape recordings. In 1966, Maya Kristalinskaya was recognized as the best pop singer of the year.

Later, luck turned away from her. In the 70th year, Sergei Georgievich Lapin, who was a personal friend of Brezhnev, became the chairman of the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company. After that, the persecution of many famous singers began, including Kristalinskaya. After the performance of the song “Rain in Our City” at the New Year's “Blue Light”, the TV management accused the performer of promoting sadness. She practically ceased to be shown on television, her tour continued, but she was allowed to perform only in rural clubs and regional centers of the Ryazan, Tula and Oryol regions.

In the last years of her life, Kristalinskaya was engaged in the translation of the book "Reflections" by Marlene Dietrich from German. The book was published after the death of the singer.

Personal life of Maya Kristalinskaya

The first husband of Kristalinskaya was the writer Arkady Arkanov in 1958. They signed in secret from their parents, and then simply presented them with a fact. The marriage did not last long, a year later Arkanov and Kristalinskaya parted. They divorced officially only in 1962.

The second husband was the famous architect Eduard Barclay, whom she met at a dinner party at the house of the famous doctor A. Vishnevsky. At the table they sat side by side and Eduard Maksimovich politely courted Maya all evening. After a few months, they began to live together.

The marriage of Barclay and Kristalinskaya lasted almost twenty years. In June 1984, the couple threw a feast to mark their departure for the next day's vacation. In the morning Eduard Maksimovich felt unwell, he suffered from diabetes mellitus. He passed out. Maya called an ambulance, the arriving doctors gave Eduard an injection, but it was too late, he died. He was buried on June 19. Maya experienced the loss of her husband hard, lost interest in life and stopped being seen by a doctor.

After the institute, Maya left for Novosibirsk for distribution, then returned, began to work in a design bureau. And in the evenings she sang in an amateur ensemble that performed at Moscow venues.

Kristalinskaya was noticed and began to be recognized. And in 1957 she became a laureate of the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow as a member of the amateur ensemble "First Steps" under the direction of Yuri Seulsky. The singer was incredibly happy, but she didn't even think about making the song her profession.

Everything was decided by chance: the soloist left the orchestra of the famous jazz player Eddie Rosner, and that same evening he saw Maya on the stage. She could not refuse his offer, and from that moment on, the life of the designer Kristalinskaya changed dramatically. Instead of monotonous everyday life in the design bureau - constant performances, tours, traveling. This was what she had long wanted and what she was afraid to admit, even to herself.

At first, Maya flew like on wings, and then she became very tired. She could not understand what was happening to her: she just woke up, but she was no longer strong. Returning from a tour to Moscow, Kristalinskaya fell ill. The temperature was about forty, the district doctor said: atypical angina, we must see the specialists. The singer just waved her hand, she has no time to go to hospitals. She recovered, but after a couple of weeks, small nodules appeared on her neck. Then the orchestra leader sounded the alarm - he himself took her to the doctor.

The doctors had no doubts about the diagnosis: a malignant tumor of the lymph glands. In front of Maya, they never said the word "cancer", but she quickly guessed everything. I found a medical encyclopedia, read that the prognosis for this disease is unfavorable ... In the presence of doctors and colleagues, she strengthened herself, but, being alone, she could not refrain from sobbing. She is only twenty-eight years old, she has just found her calling, and now she must die! It was so ridiculous, so unfair!

Doctors reassured the young singer: there are modern methods of treatment, the disease can recede. She has a chance to live for many more years if she observes all the instructions.

The singer underwent a course of radiation, which left burns on her neck. Later this course had to be repeated several times. It never occurred to anyone that an elegant scarf around the singer's neck was not a tribute to elegance and style, but a way to hide the traces of a fatal illness.

Medicines also needed to be taken constantly, many of them had side effects: nausea, heaviness in the whole body, apathy. But the singer endured. I made myself rejoice, communicate with loved ones, go on tour, and most importantly - sing. Kristalinskaya was lucky with the doctors: they extended the singer's life by a quarter of a century.

The woman, who sang so much about love, did not develop her personal life for a very long time. At twenty-five, Maya married Arkady Arkanov, then an unknown medical student. It was a swift romance: they met on April 30, and on June 1 they already left the registry office as husband and wife. Their union broke up just as quickly: ten months later, Arkady left, slamming the door. Both were worried, but could not calmly discuss what had happened. It seemed that the breakup was the only way out of the endless series of quarrels.

After that, the singer was left alone for a long time. She was busy with music, and when she found out that she was sick and could not have children, she completely gave up on herself. She was surrounded by fans and many of them were ready for anything, but she closed herself in her shell and did not let anyone near her.

And yet fate gave her a parting gift - Kristalinskaya met a man with whom she found real happiness. Moscow architect Eduard Barclay took care of her for a long time. He came to every concert with a huge bouquet of red roses, but did not impose his company on Maya, modestly kept aloof. She felt that she was increasingly drawn to him.

And in the end I made up my mind: I told him everything on the very first date. This did not stop him. Edward wanted to be with his beloved until the end, as long as she had left. He became everything to her: an advisor, a friend, a nurse. He made sure that Maya took her medications on time, supported her during painful procedures.

The shadow of tragedy hanging over them gave special value to every day they spent together. Maya thought that she would leave first, worried about how he would be without her. Everything turned out differently: Eduard Barclay died suddenly from a stroke caused by diabetes. The singer was left alone. She was a strong woman, used to fighting for her life, but now her strength has left her. Everything around seemed empty and meaningless without a loved one.

Doctors diagnosed angina. However, this verdict turned out to be erroneous. Soon, while on tour in Leningrad, Kristalinskaya noticed small nodules on her neck. The singer decided that this is a common complication after a sore throat. But Rosner persuaded her to see a doctor. Maya took this advice. Returning to Moscow, she went to the district clinic. The local doctor immediately referred her to an oncologist. He made a diagnosis - a tumor of the lymph glands. Maya was prescribed chemotherapy. She was irradiated here, in the hospital. The treatment helped: the disease was “conserved” and transferred from acute to chronic. But from now on, medicines, pills, medical procedures have entered the singer's life. As a result of periodic medical irradiation, Kristalinskaya's entire neck was burned, so she began to perform only in closed dresses and with an invariable kerchief around her neck.

Meanwhile, from that moment on, rumors about the singer's untimely death began to be born among the people: she was dying of cancer, then she laid hands on herself. On this occasion, the magazine "Youth" even published a humoresque by Grigory Gorin entitled "Is it true?" I quote:

“No, tell me, is it true that Maya Kristalinskaya got poisoned? Do not know? Well, of course! Here I got a call the other day. They say so, so and so. Poisoned! I got excited, I call one, I call another - no one knows. I am even more worried, I call Mosestrada. They tell me: a lie. But, you know, they speak somehow uncertainly. In a hoarse voice. It alarmed me. He raised all the acquaintances to their feet, rushed around the city to find out. By the evening from all the acquaintances you can only hear: she was poisoned! And here the posters are hanging. Kristalinskaya has a concert today at the Variety Theater. I'm flying to the theater. I see there is a crowd. I thought I was going to the funeral, and this is for tickets! .. I broke into the theater, I sit in the hall, I see: Kristalinskaya is entering the stage. Alive !!! My heart relieved ... I left the concert. Why listen to a concert when nothing happened ?! "

They say that when Kristalinskaya herself was told about rumors about her death, she ... was sincerely happy. Being a superstitious woman, she believed that since she was buried during her lifetime, it means that fate would measure her for many years. Alas, it will not measure ...

Apparently, the death of Kristalinskaya from life hastened the death of her husband Edward Barclay. The singer's husband died suddenly. The night before, they had a small feast to celebrate their departure tomorrow on vacation, and on the morning of the next day, just before leaving, Barclay passed out. He was taken to a hospital, where he died five days later. On June 19, 1984, Edward Barclay was buried.

The singer's friends tried to somehow help Kristalinskaya. With their help, she managed to record a whole disc on Melodiya, which included more than ten songs. Among them: "Let's Talk", "Dear Land", "It's Raining", "If You Can't Sleep at Night", "Summer is Over", etc.

In early 1985, Kristalinskaya was admitted to the hospital. There she was given radiation, but it did not help much. The singer's speech worsened, her right leg and arm began to move poorly. As I. Kobzon recalls:

“Once we met after the death of Edik Barclay at Chermen Kasayev’s birthday party, and I realized that she was leaving us. She quietly, modestly approached me, I saw her punctured hands, they did not hold. Then I insisted that she perform at the author's evening of Lev Oshanin in the Hall of Columns, together with me she sang the song “I'll wait for you” from our “Courtyard cycle”. This was our last date with her on stage. Soon she fell ill, I came to her hospital. It was scary, of course, to look at her. She really wanted to inscribe me her new disc, which had just been released, but it was difficult for her. I said: “Mayushka, why are you suffering? I believe in you, the whole country is waiting for you. " She cried and only said: "No, Joseph."

Kristalinskaya was discharged from the hospital closer to spring. Since her condition was poor, she was constantly with one of her relatives or friends - her sister Anna or Maria Borisovna. In May, Kristalinskaya lost her speech. She could still call on the phone, but she didn’t speak anymore and only cried into the receiver. She was again admitted to the Botkin hospital. There she died. June 19, 1985 was on the calendar. On this day, exactly a year ago, Eduard Barclay was buried.

Maya Kristalinskaya found her last refuge at the Donskoy cemetery. On a marble stele on her grave, the words are carved:
