Almost on every page you can see the author's desire to humiliate the hero at all costs, whom he considered his enemy and therefore heaped all kinds of absurdities on him and in every possible way mocked him, scattering in witticisms and barbs. All this is permissible, appropriate, perhaps even good in some polemical article; and in the novel it is a blatant injustice that destroys its poetic effect.
