But, being a man of a restless, acutely critical, searching mind, he soon became disillusioned with everything that had been close and dear to him since childhood, became fed up with social life, and began to read, in addition to fiction, Russian and foreign literature, socio-political and even economic literature. This led the “young rake” to dissatisfaction with the surrounding reality and determined his opposition to the then prevailing social order and life of high society.

The image of Onegin is complex and contradictory, containing positive signs of progressiveness, humaneness, enlightenment, and sharply negative traits a clearly expressed individualist, practical inactivity, became the founder of the so-called “superfluous people” in Russian literature. Onegin is horrified by this senseless crime. The murder of Lensky turned the hero’s whole life upside down. He is no longer able to live in those places where everything reminded him of what he had done, which is why he sets off to wander.
