The origin of the names of punches in boxing

The loudest names are always heard, but not everyone knows the order of their application and what they mean, although in reality everything turns out to be not so difficult:

Uppercut - the name comes from the English uppercut, which can be translated as "chopping from below" and means a backhand attack with a fist along the inner trajectory, with the fist turned towards itself. This blow, like its name, also comes from traditional English.

Swing is a side blow, the name comes from the English verb swing, that is, a blow from the side and from a long distance. It also belongs to the traditional, but it is mainly used there.

Jeb - the name comes from the English word jab, a sudden blow, jab, is one of the main blows used in the modern.

Hook - the name comes from the English hook, meaning hook, since it is applied with a hand bent at the elbow, sometimes the Russian name can also be used.

In addition to these basic ones, there are also a lot of auxiliary techniques that can be characteristic of individual athletes, they make boxing even more vivid and spectacular.

Dempsey's strike, which is also called "the sun", looks like a rotation of the body along the trajectory of the number 8, its meaning is the simultaneous protection from enemy attacks and attacks. Its author is boxer Jack Dempsey.

What is impact force and how to determine it? To date, an objective assessment of the force with which a blow is delivered has been set only in professional boxing. For this, a variety of measurement parameters for speed, power and efficiency are applied.

In professional leagues, in order to measure the strongest impact, a special electronic rating system "CompuBox" is used. If we talk about non-professional boxing, then the most powerful blow is the "Cross". This translates as "cross".

Types of punches in boxing

  1. Hook (hook) - short side kick, which is applied with the right or left hand, bent at the elbow. Such blows are directed to the head or body of the enemy. The main goal of this technique is to win ahead of time. By themselves, single hooks are not effective. A competent combination of blows is necessary. There are only three main punches in boxing - straight, bottom, side. They are applied with both the left and right hand:

  1. The left straight is a jab. The longest shot in boxing, in which the boxer remains as protected as possible and creates space for himself for further attack. A good attacking streak always starts with a jab.
  2. The right straight line is a cross. A properly placed working hand is a formidable weapon. Less frequently applied than a jab. But it is so powerful that it is used to knock out an enemy with one blow.

Any workout should start with a warm-up. Work out all muscle groups. Boxing training is often done from top to bottom. Starting with the hands and ending with the feet. Before practicing blows, hands must be wrapped in bandages to fix the joints.

When punches are practiced, the hand itself should be relaxed, while the fist should be clenched as much as possible at the moment it touches the opponent's body. With direct and side impacts, the fist must be tucked so that at the moment of the attack the palm is turned down. For each blow, a step is taken and the body is tucked to give inertia. A direct hit in boxing is carried out constantly. It helps to keep the right distance and to pull the opponent apart. It is necessary to beat a side kick in boxing when the opponent lowers his hand or, conversely, raises it, opening the body. Lower blows are carried out in counterattacks when approaching.
