History of Muay Thai (Thai boxing). Muay Thai training: the light and dark side of Muay Thai

The content of the article

(muay thai), the martial art of Thailand. One of the meanings of the word "Thai" is free, therefore the name of this martial art can be translated as "free fight". Fights in Muay Thai are conducted in full contact according to very strict rules. The basis of Muay Thai is the percussion technique. Strikes are applied at all levels: to the head and to the body, arms and legs, elbows and knees. Grabs and throws play a secondary role. Applied techniques are also cultivated in Muay Thai: working with piercing and cutting weapons, various types of daggers, sticks, throwing knives, etc. The Thai government in every possible way contributes to the development of Muay Thai and allocates considerable funds for this. Nowadays, Thai fighting is popular far beyond the borders of the country.

History reference.

Already in the 13th century. on the territory of modern Thailand there was an art of fighting with bare hands and feet - mai si sok. Later, with the formation of the state of Ayutthaya (Siam), a new martial art appeared - plow (literally "multilateral combat"), which over time also became known as "Muay Thai". Muay Thai is widespread in Ayutthaya. Outstanding fighters were enlisted in the royal guard and awarded them the title of nobility. Princes of the blood and aristocrats were required to study Muay Thai. For a long time, it developed as a system of tough hand-to-hand combat. A warrior who mastered the techniques of Muay Thai could successfully continue the fight, even having lost his weapon.

The legendary warrior Nai Khan Tom is considered the “patron saint” of Muay Thai. During the war with Burma in 1774, he was captured. The Burmese had their own martial art - parmu. The King of Burma Mangra decided to arrange a duel between Thai boxers and Parmu masters to find out which art is stronger. Nai Kham Tom alone fought ten Burmese masters in turn without interruption. Having won all ten fights, he was freed and returned home as a national hero. Until now, the "boxing night" is celebrated annually on March 17 in Thailand: fights are held throughout the country in honor of the legendary warrior.

In 1788, representatives of Muay Thai first met in the ring with Europeans. Two French boxing masters who traveled to Thailand asked the Thai king for permission to fight with local fighters. The senior instructor of the Thai Ministry of Defense, Master Muen Plan, took up the challenge and defeated both rivals.

Thailand took part in the First World War on the side of the Entente. It was during this time that information about Muay Thai began to spread widely to Europe. The poorly armed Thais impressed the European allies with their physical fitness and superior hand-to-hand combat skills.

In 1921, during the reign of King Rama VI, Muay Thai began to develop as a sport. General Phraya Nonsen Surendra Pandey, on behalf of the king, organized a Muay Thai study center on the territory of one of the colleges in Bangkok. In 1929, "modernized" rules were adopted. (Muay Thai is still considered one of the toughest martial arts, and in those days the death or serious injuries of a fighter during a fight were common.) The earthen pads were replaced by a ring measuring 6ґ 6 meters, fenced with ropes. The time of the fight was limited to 5 rounds of 3 minutes each with one minute breaks (before the fight lasted until one of the opponents lost the ability to continue the fight). Instead of traditional leather belts, which the fighters used to bandage their hands, boxing gloves were introduced. Leg protection was not provided, but the rules allowed to bandage the shin and instep. 7 weight categories were introduced (before the division into weight categories did not exist in Muay Thai).

In the mid-1960s, a real boom in Muay Thai began in Europe and the United States. It was then that the representatives of Muay Thai invited the representatives of other martial arts to fight with them. The challenge was accepted by the Kekushinkai Karate masters. The historic match took place on February 17, 1966 in Bangkok. Each side was attended by 3 athletes. The match ended with a score of 2: 1 in favor of the Kekushinkai karate masters. Nevertheless, they appreciated Muay Thai and adopted some of its elements.

In 1984, the International Amateur Thai Boxing Federation (IAMTF) was created. Today, it includes regional organizations in more than 70 countries, it is the largest of the amateur Muay Thai associations. In parallel, there are organizations conducting professional fights. With the rise in popularity of Muay Thai around the world, many professional kickboxing leagues have switched to Muay Thai and its European counterpart, Thai kickboxing.

Seven-time full-contact world champion and famous actor Chuck Norris calls Muay Thai "the sport of the 21st century." Steps are currently being taken to be recognized as an Olympic sport.

Technique, preparation and fights in muay thai.

Muay Thai is considered one of the toughest martial arts. His technique allows him to fight equally well at long, medium and close range. But the most dangerous are Muay Thai fighters at medium distance and in close combat. “The elbow beats the fist, and the knee beats the leg” is one of the basic principles of Muay Thai. It is in close combat that the knees and elbows pose the greatest danger to the enemy. Another "signature" Muay Thai technique is a lowkik (a circular kick with the shin on the thighs). In general, the use of the lower leg as a striking surface is not the instep of the foot (as in most other martial arts), but the lower leg is one of the characteristic features of Muay Thai. For "stuffing" the lower leg, special exercises have been developed: blows on the trunks of palm trees, on sandbags, "rolling" with a faceted stick - followed by treatment of the lower leg with special ointments. After such "stuffing" a Muay Thai fighter can kick a baseball bat with a kick. The opponent's low-kicks are also blocked with the help of the shin. Much attention in Thai boxing is also paid to the "stuffing" of the body, stretching, and the development of endurance.

The technique of hands in Muay Thai outwardly resembles the technique of "European" boxing, but differs in great variety.

Unlike other oriental martial arts, in Thai boxing there are no formal complexes (like, for example, kata in karate), but there are so-called "movements of three steps" (yang saam khum) - short ligaments, consisting of basic movements, which in the process of training are brought to automatism. Most of the combinations and techniques used in Thai boxing have been known since the time when this art was called "plow". In total, there are 30 such basic combinations: 15 basic (mae may) and 15 additional (onion may).

There are two styles in Muay Thai. Muay lacquer (literally "hard fight") is now rare. Previously, this style was common in the villages. Muay lacquer is a firm, stable position of a fighter, powerful defense, slow movements. Actions are based on counterattacks, the battle is mainly conducted at close range. Muay Kieu (literally "smart fight") is built on feints, escapes, deceptive movements, the fighter is constantly moving. At the same time, the specificity of Muay Keu is not reflected in the severity of the battle.

The art of working with weapons in Muay Thai is called "crab-krabong" (swords and sticks) and was formed, first of all, on the basis of Indian, Chinese and Japanese methods of warfare. The first crab school, krabong, opened back in the 14th century - buddhai-savan - still functions. The traditional weapon of the Thais - daab - is a heavy two-handed sword of medium length and is used as a single and double weapon. Also in the combat arsenal of Muay Thai includes: the Ngou halberd, the Thuan spear, many sticks and daggers, as well as throwing knives, the Thanu bow and the Naa May crossbow.

The muay thai fight is preceded by the ram muay dance. This is not only a tribute to the ancient tradition, but also a kind of physical warm-up, as well as the psychological preparation of the fighter before the fight. (By the performance of ram-muay, one can determine which school he belongs to and which technique he prefers). Before the fight, the opponents meditate. The fight takes place to the traditional wy-cru music, which sets the rhythm of the fight. It is believed that the sounds of instruments are endowed with magical properties.

In Europe and America, wai kru and ram muay are optional. Eurotiboxing (or Thai kickboxing) differs from classic Muay Thai and the rules: it prohibits elbow strikes to the head, prolonged grabs, and in some cases knee strikes. This adapted version of Muay Thai has become over time one of the seven directions of kickboxing. In addition, in Europe and America, practically no attention is paid to working with weapons.

The uniform of a Thai boxer - sports shorts, a ritual headband (for the duration of the fight, it is given to the trainer) and boxing gloves. Previously, shellfish were used for protection, now they are standard inguinal shells.

Muay Thai in Russia.

The widespread development of Muay Thai in Russia began in 1992, when the professional Russian Muay Thai League (RLMT) was created in Novosibirsk on the initiative of Sergei Zayashnikov. In December 1995, the Russian Thai Boxing Federation (FTBR) was organized on the basis of RLMT. Sergey Zhukov was elected President of the Federation, S. Zayashnikov became vice-president. Muay Thai is currently cultivated in many large cities in Russia. National championships are held regularly. Russian athletes have won world championships and other major international competitions more than once.

Thai boxing one of the toughest, but at the same time not cruel martial arts, which is suitable for someone who wants to master tactics, technique and a number of other qualities that will be needed for successful fighting. Thai boxing one of the closest single combats to a real fight, its distinctive features from kickboxing consist in the presence of some specific blows (elbows, knees), stock grabs and throws.

V muay thai quite effective striking technique different parts of the body, emphasis is also placed on psychological dexterity and the study of vulnerabilities. In the vastness of the CIS countries Muetay appeared only in the 90s, but now it occupies one of the leading positions among martial arts, and every year the number of its fans only grows rapidly. Perhaps we can find an explanation for this fact in the fact that Thai boxing allows you to regularly take part in competitions of various levels, from the city championship to European and World Championships.

Of course, like any other art combat, muetai has its own training system. Warm-up in which several rounds fighter hones all kinds of punches using them. Working with a coach, which is aimed at improving technology. Work on apparatus and strength exercises. In addition to the main referee on the field were also present, side. The changes also affected the prohibition of some combat methods of wrestling, so wrestling throws, head, palm, finger strikes, groin strikes, as well as strikes on a fallen opponent were prohibited. The winner the battle became the one who spent knockout, by points or in the case of a technical knockout, it was also decided to introduce such a concept as surrender. Boxers now boxed on the ring 6x6 meters. It was already something similar to our modern Muetay.

Its popularity Muetay in Europe received approximately from March 12, 1977, when the masters Muay Thai defeated the masters kickboxing, despite the fact that some rules in the ring were neutralized all the distinctive features Muay Thai (blows elbow, knee), it would seem that this is an accident, if not for the fact that after kickboxers were defeated and karate Now the most powerful school is still located in Thailand, and the names of the most famous masters are Surachay Sirisute, Utpad Noy Voravuzhd and Panya Kraytas.

Typical Muay Thai Workout Scheme as follows:

  • warm-up - many three-minute rounds using all types of punches;
  • work on apparatus and technique training with a trainer;
  • strength exercises (especially popular push-ups, strengthening the abdominal muscles, rotating the body) and stretching.

Particular attention is paid to psychological preparation and the study of the most vulnerable places of the human body.

Thai boxing- a harmonious system that allows a person to master technique, tactics, as well as a number of physical and psychological qualities necessary for a successful fight in the shortest possible time.

Or Muay Thai wushu is distinguished by the absence of formal complexes (kata, taolu), they are replaced by basic ligaments of two or three punches, sparring and work on sacks.

Muay Thai is believed to have its origins over 2000 years ago in the Ao Lai Thai people, and this style of hand-to-hand combat was originally known as plow.

Legend claims that the plow was created in a cave near the city of Suwannapum by five great masters: Kru Kun Playai, Kru Lam, Kru Fong, Kru Sri Treirat, and the daughter of Kru Kun Plaai, Kru Me Bua.

For centuries, the Thai army has studied these combat techniques. The soldier studied and trained as long as he was in the army. For the army, it was a means of active close combat, a martial art from the most ancient battlefields.

The first plowing competition at the end of the 10th century was organized by the ruler of the city of Autong - Phra Panza. This spectacle was conceived by him as entertainment and at the same time a gamble for the entire population. The fights were of a friendly nature, the killing of an opponent was not allowed. And the competitions themselves began to be called "muay" ("fight, duel") or "panan muay" ("fight on the result of which bets are made").

So gradually Muay Thai began to move from the battlefield to the ring.

Muay Thai has always been loved by the Thai people, but like any sport, there were times when it was most popular. During the reign of King Rama 5, many Muay Thai matches were organized by the royal government, and the winners received military titles from the King, mostly from the royal guard.

During the time of King Rama 6, Muay Thai began to use a ring surrounded by ropes, and the time was counted by a clock. Until that time, the countdown was carried out on the punctured fruit of the coconut tree floating in the water. When the fruit was sinking, the drum announced the end of the round.

In the days of the Tiger King, the hands and forearms of a Muay Thai fighter were wrapped in strips of horse hide. This was necessary, firstly, to protect the boxer, and secondly, for a stronger blow. Later, hemp ropes or ordinary cotton ribbons were used.

Muay Thai has been a favorite sport for Thais for many centuries. Anyone could study Muay Thai, be it an ordinary person or the king himself. Muay Thai was part of the school curriculum until 1920 when it was canceled. People, however, continued to learn Muay Thai in clubs and gyms as they do today.

In 1930, dramatic changes took place in Muay Thai. Muay Thai's tough nature has been changed to fit international boxing rules. Instead of tying rope around the hands, the fights were fought with gloves. Judo-type throws and punches to the groin were prohibited. This reduced the number of injuries and made Muay Thai less severe. Since that time, the main provisions in the rules and instructions of Muay Thai have been determined, which exist and are used to this day.

In the applied aspect, Muay Thai is distinguished by simplicity and efficiency. Muay Thai is a tough sport, but not at all violent. The basis of the training of a Thai boxer is a duel in various forms: conditional and free fights (sparring), as well as slug work, filling the learned Muay Thai technique with strength and speed. In Muay Thai, protectors are widely used, which, in combination with competent teaching methods, minimize the risk of injury.

A typical Muay Thai workout scheme is as follows: warm-up - many three-minute rounds using all types of punches; work on apparatus and technique training with a trainer; strength exercises (especially popular push-ups, strengthening the abdominal muscles, rotating the body) and stretching. Particular attention is paid to psychological preparation and the study of the most vulnerable places of the human body.

Muay Thai or Muay Thai has been the Kingdom's national sport for over 2000 years. Every year it becomes more popular all over the world. Muay Thai is a martial art without the use of weapons; it differs from ordinary boxing by the ability to use arms, elbows, feet and knees, for which it is sometimes called “the fight of the eight”. In Thailand, Muay Thai has long ceased to be just boxing; it is art, science, discipline, knowledge and respect.

Muay thai workouts

Muay Thai not only keeps the body in good physical shape, but also improves blood circulation, increases body flexibility and forms a stable nervous system. Muay Thai practice is not only about physical fitness, but also about the study of moral values and norms of life. She teaches to be humble, self-confident, speak only the truth and avoid sins. This martial art teaches knowledge about the weak and vulnerable points of the enemy's body. A fighter can easily defeat others if he has an accurate understanding of the weak points.

The process of training a Muay Thai fighter includes not only practicing strikes, but also physical training: running, jumping rope, abdominal exercises and others. The Muay Thai fighter uses his body as a weapon: his hands have become swords and daggers, the legs and forearms have become hardened, becoming shields from blows, the elbows have turned into heavy clubs and hammers, and the legs and knees play the role of axes and clubs. The body works as a whole. Knees and elbows in constant search for open spots of the enemy to knock him to the ground.

Thai boxing. Story

Muay Thai has its roots in the centuries, when a form of melee combat was developed, in which fighters used their entire body as a weapon. Much of the historical record about Muay Thai was lost during another attack by the Burmese, when the capital Ayutthaya was burned to the ground and temples were looted. Everything that has been preserved is currently protected as a national treasure of Thai culture and heritage.

The word “muay” comes from Sanskrit and means “to bind”. Muay Thai is called the “art of the eight limbs” because it allows punches, kicks, elbows and knees. Thus, there are more points of contact in Muay Thai than when using only the hands in regular boxing, arms and legs, as in kickboxing.

Traditional Thai boxing evolved from the ancient martial art "Muay Boran", which is still studied and practiced in the Kingdom in order to preserve the boxing methods. It is believed that Muay Thai as a wrestling style was developed over the centuries by tribes who migrated south from China to the north of modern Thailand. The Siamese, one of the peoples, fought fiercely for survival, moving south, where they clashed with other tribes. During training in military tactics, literally from hand to hand, combat techniques were improved, discarding the unnecessary and using only the necessary elements.

The older warriors taught the younger ones, and the fathers taught their sons, offensive and defensive tactics and combat techniques, correct posture and body position, developed practical skills in order to improve knowledge and skills. So knowledge was passed from generation to generation, and an effective fighting style began to strengthen. Correct technique and punching force were key in the battle. Every move was honed for crushing blows that allowed you to quickly move to the next enemy without fear of re-attack.

Thais were reliably protected from constant attacks from neighboring states, including Burma and Cambodia. The military continued to train soldiers in the art of Muay Thai for centuries based on the tactics and techniques of Burmese, Cambodian and other invaders. Thai men returned from the battlefield and began hosting Muay Thai sports matches for fun in towns and villages. Experienced warriors who survived the battles became teachers. So the love of sports and the need to defend their homeland and people made Muay Thai a part of Thai culture, a heritage passed down from generation to generation.

Over the past century, Muay Thai has become widely known outside Thailand, gaining international recognition. During World War II, Thai soldiers abroad practiced Muay Thai among themselves, which attracted the attention of soldiers from America and Europe. Then “Siamese boxing”, as it was called, took the first confident steps towards world recognition.

Back in the early 20th century, foreigners were so impressed with this martial art that they asked Thais to teach them the basics. With the growth of international interest, the rules of Muay Thai have changed slightly: a ring appeared, ropes wound around the hands were replaced with gloves vaguely reminiscent of boxing gloves, the tradition of dipping hands in sticky resin and broken glass was gone, and means of protection against kicks and knees for the groin area were added.

After the end of World War II, the first official Muay Thai rules were introduced. The battles were divided into 5 rounds, the latter being limited to a certain time, which was now measured in hours, and not a coconut shell placed in a barrel of water. Major stadiums were built all over the country: in Bangkok, Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Muay Thai grew in popularity. Today, Lumpini Stadium is considered a “holy ground” for every boxer. The system of division of fighters by weight, certain rules, championships between cities and countries - all this brought Muay Thai closer in style and organization to ordinary boxing. Thais are keeping their fingers crossed and eagerly awaiting Muay Thai to become the official Olympic sport.

The Muay Thai tradition began to develop during the reign of King Naresuan. Many legends about the struggle for their country and freedom from the Burmese invaders generated great enthusiasm among the Thais. Nai Khan Tom is considered the father of Thai boxing. In 1767, the Burmese army attacked the Siam capital Ayutthaya, plundering its magnificent temples and palaces. Many people were taken prisoner. Among them was the Muay Thai fighter Nai Khanom Tom. In honor of the victory, the Burmese king held a big celebration, during which, to entertain his subjects, Thai prisoners had to fight with the best Burmese fighters. When it was Nai Khanom Tom's turn to participate in the competition, he began it with traditional ritual dances performed by all the fighters, paying tribute to their teachers and the enemy. The Burmese were amazed, they thought that Nai Khanom Tom was trying to appeal to evil spirits for the fastest victory. As soon as the fight began, the Burmese opponent was knocked out in a matter of minutes with a series of hard kicks and elbows. Eyewitnesses of this battle did not doubt for a second that the Thais had won a quick victory due to the help of evil spirits, so nine more battles were fought. Nai Khanom Tom managed to defeat all his opponents without a minute's rest. The Burmese king was impressed by the abilities of the Thai warrior and awarded him the desired freedom. Nai Khanom Tom returned to Thailand as a legend. Although many centuries have passed, there is a tradition of celebrating Muay Thai Day, dedicated to the hero of Siam and held annually on March 17th.

The Thai people are known for their superstition and belief in evil spirits and ghosts. Every boxer wears a special bandage on his head called mongkon. It is believed to bring good luck in battle. Many people wear a bracelet on their forearm (pratyet) for the same purpose. Muay Thai fighters have used special tattoos, amulets and ceremonies for centuries to attract good luck and ward off misfortune and evil spirits that haunted them in the ring. Some of them carry the ashes of their ancestors in the mongkon or pratyet. Among Muay Thai fighters, magical sak yant tattoos are common, which are applied in temples by monks. They protect against defeat in battle, give courage, strength and invulnerability. However, sak yant is popular among all Thai people, in the future I will tell you about this type of tattoos. It happens that fighters use special oils to rub their bodies. It is customary to wear special protective amulets. They may have various protective inscriptions, or they may be figures of Buddha or famous monks. Whatever it was protected: a tattoo, an amulet, oil or the ashes of ancestors - they are all designed for self-confidence and self-confidence.

One of the oldest Muay Thai traditions is wai khru and the ram muay dance performed by every boxer before a fight. They are designed to show respect for the enemy, parents, teachers and other religions. The Ram Muay technique of each fighter is individual, and this is a great opportunity to take a closer look and study the enemy. Some boxers put their deep spiritual convictions into Ram Muay, while for others it's just the perfect warm-up before a fight. During the ram muay, four musicians play. It is used only at matches and never, for example, for background music in a restaurant or hotel. This music helps the boxer to cheer up and gives him self-confidence, makes him ready for physical struggle.

Muay Thai has long and deeply taken root in Thai culture and traditions. This is something grandiose, almost imperceptible, but the eye of a professional cannot fail to recognize its existence. Muay Thai is about more than just getting fit and a gym. Muay Thai is like a living art where fighters are the canvas and the punches are brushes. There is nothing more exciting for the viewer than watching two artists create a masterpiece. Muay Thai is a unique chance for poor boys to become famous. A typical Muay Thai fighter in Thailand trains for several hours every day. Many of them participate in battles 3-4 times a week to earn money for their family. Boys begin their education at the age of 6-8, the first time they enter the ring at the age of 8-10. Thai boxing is not just a fight, it is a whole cultural layer of the Kingdom, in which Nai Khanom Tom served as a catalyst. Great Muay Thai fighters are famous all over the world. Samat Payakarun, recognized as a Thai boxing legend, bears the title of “Tiger with the face of a child”.

Muay Thai is widely popularized in Thai cinema. In 2004, the film "My Beautiful Boxer" was released, which tells the real life story of a Muay Thai fighter who earned money by boxing in order to. For her role in this film, Asani Suwan received an award from the Thai National Film Association. Muay Thai is reflected in Thai and international cinema. Perhaps some of the famous Thai films are Ong Bak and Tom Yam Kung. They showcase some of the techniques of Muay Boran, the Muay Koshasan royal guard style called elephant boxing, and the great Tony Jah is inimitable. In Thailand, there was a popular reality show with fighters from all over the world, which told about the history and techniques of this martial art. Muay Thai is also featured in a variety of video games.
