Monitor for photography. Choosing the best designer monitor

The courier called me and said that the BenQ SW2700PT monitor had been delivered. Frankly, I was waiting with interest for this monitor for the test. The monitor has been declared by the manufacturer as a “photographer's monitor”. This is just for me! When people ask me what I do, I answer: "I am a professional photographer."

And I explain that "professional" means what I earn with this profession, that is, this is my main occupation. And of course, I try to work with tools created specifically for my profession. It is generally accepted that for a photographer it is a camera and lenses. Then there was lighting equipment and other equipment. Computer and monitor are on this list, but not in the first place. But here's what I'll tell you if you evaluate
the time spent on the set, behind the camera, in the studio and in front of the monitor, the time spent processing photographs, almost more.

Professional work requires comfortable working conditions, any problems affect the result and, ultimately, income. You guess that the monitor is a tool with which the photographer works as much and as carefully as with the camera.

So, the box with the BenQ SW2700PT is in front of me, and I'm unpacking it.
The first thing I find in the box is a report on the factory calibration of the monitor.

Having read in advance about the BenQ SW2700PT, about the configuration and characteristics, the reviews about the model, I knew that this monitor is calibrated at the factory and you can start working right away. On paper, the results of the calibration of this particular monitor, which is confirmed by its serial number. Immediately I look at the DeltaE value, 1.9344 is indicated. This value guarantees me accurate color reproduction. In addition, BenQ SW2700PT supports 99% coverage of the AdobeRGB color space. I must say that I chose my work monitor with similar characteristics. The point is that my professional specialization is jewelry photography. It is important for me to see the slightest deviations in the color of precious stones and metals. The camera settings are also set to the color space AdobeRGB.

I continue to remove the monitor components from the box. I know there must be a protective visor. Here it is!

Assembled in three parts. It is wonderful that the inner side is covered with velvet material. I've always made my monitors' visors out of black studio backdrops. I take out the stand and the monitor itself.

In addition to a set of standard connecting cables, I also find an external controller in the kit - such a round thing that looks like a wired computer mouse.

The rack has a hole for parking the controller. When I collect it, let's see what kind of gadget it is!
Assembling the monitor took a few minutes. My MAC mini has two HDMI and DisplayPort video inputs. The monitor comes with DisplayPort and DVI cables. The connection to my work monitor is also assembled from a DVI cable and an adapter to HDMI. I do not waste time and connect with a ready-made cable to the output of the DVI monitor. The set includes a USB 3.0 cable, type A plug to type B. This connection to the monitor allows the BenQ SW2700PT to operate two USB inputs and an SD card reader. I put the visor on the assembled monitor not without difficulty, something went wrong, I could not get into the installation
slots on the monitor. Everything is now set.
Turn on!
The indicator on the bottom right changes from red to white, which means the monitor is successfully connected to the computer. The screen lit up, and I start working through the password. I can't wait to see the picture on a 27-inch monitor. The first picture will be a photo of a piece of jewelry from my beloved
customer. I open a photo of a colorful brooch made of gold, hot enamel, diamonds and colored stones in the editor.

I understand that the resolution does not correspond to the one declared by BenQ SW2700PT - 2560x1440 pixels.
In the system settings of the MAC OS, the list of screen resolutions does not contain the expected value 2560x1440. I recall that I read in the BenQ SW2700PT monitor review that the maximum data transfer rates from the computer to the monitor are provided when connected via a DisplayPort cable, in particular, output in 10-bit per color mode!
This, of course, has nothing to do with resolution, but I'm not ready to deal with the intricacies now. I'll just change the connection type. A miracle happened! The resolution is now 2560x1440 pixels.

I was very pleased with the fact that at 200% magnification the picture slightly loses its clarity. This is due to the density of 109 ppi.

Now I start testing the monitor!
First, the tinctures.
Out of habit, I press the buttons on the monitor at the bottom right. I am mastering control by typing. The menu call and settings are clear, the transition to Russian. There is a common understanding. I take with interest the controller connected with a relatively short wire to the monitor. I press the "1" key. BenQ SW2700PT responds with “AdobeRGB” in the lower right corner of the screen. I press the key "2" - the message "sRGB" appears. It's clear. There is also a "3" key, it is responsible for switching the monitor to B / W mode. Everything is logical! The controller also has a center button and a joystick-type circular key. Having pressed both that and another several times, I understand that I knocked down some settings. Read the instructions, friends! Instructions for cameras, monitors, microwave ovens and even cars!

Of course, I was in a hurry, without opening the instructions, hoping on my experience and intuitive ease of assembling the monitor. The instruction was already waiting for me on the site. I read: everything is very simple. In fact, the controller is very convenient for quick transitions from one setting to another. For example, I wondered if I would see a difference when going from AdobeRGB to sRGB in the display of the color of gems and gold in a photo of jewelry. I see!

The BenQ SW2700PT monitor provides self-calibration of the monitor, the program for this can be downloaded from the website. But I prefer to entrust this operation to specialists. One of the best lives and works in our city, and I always turn to him. Now directly work with the monitor. I was told that a few days would be enough for the test. So I will continue to describe my impressions of the BenQ SW2700PT monitor in a couple of days.

I'm lucky. I enjoyed working with the BenQ SW2700PT monitor. For two days we worked with him on retouching photos of jewelry by artist Mikhail Shemyakin.

By the way, it turned out to be very convenient to quickly switch to B / W mode on the controller. This is when you want to evaluate the contrast in a picture or see how a photo looks in black and white.
The matte screen does not tire the eyes. There are quite a few reviews and reviews of the BenQ SW2700PT monitor on the Internet. There are, of course, negative opinions. Naturally, when choosing a product, any person will pay attention to the shortcomings. From similar reviews, I learned about color unevenness across the screen field and dead pixels. I did not find anything of the kind and did not observe it during my work. But what I lacked was the built-in speakers. There were times when we wondered why a mobile phone needed a camera. Now we don't even think about it and are waiting for new models of smartphones with supercams. Who knows, maybe professional monitors will be equipped with decent acoustics ?! After all, there is simply no room for speakers on the desktop. It's more pleasant to work with good music!)
I agree with the manufacturer - BenQ SW2700PT monitor for photographers!

P. S. I don’t want to return the BenQ SW2700PT monitor to the editor!)

Review author: Oleg Vaydner is a professional photographer specializing in advertising photography of objects, glass, jewelry, antiques, bronze. Member of the Russian Guild of Advertising Photographers, certified by the Federation of European Professional Photographers (FEP).

With the advent of the digital age, the world of photography has changed dramatically. Just a few years ago, we were all actively photographing and ran to the darkroom to print our photographs. A little later, we started printing pictures at home using inkjet or dye-sublimation printers. And now? Can you remember the last time you printed your photos? I caught myself thinking that I hadn’t printed anything for five years. The need has disappeared. Our photographs are now completely digital. We watch them on the monitors of our computers, put them on the network and thus share them with our friends.

That is why the second most important tool for a modern photographer, whether he is a professional or a simple amateur, after a digital camera is a monitor. But not all monitors are created equal. And the point here is not at all in the size, although they, of course, matter. Have you paid attention to the fact that the same images on different monitors look completely different? Somewhere the picture looks juicy, somewhere faded, somewhere warmer, and somewhere in cold colors. In such a situation, it is practically impossible to draw a conclusion about how the image looks like. Moreover, if you process photos on an inappropriate monitor, then there is a great chance that your work will be beautiful only on your monitor. The rest will see oversaturated or vice versa images with a color balance shifted in one direction or another. There is only one way out of this situation - using the correct monitor. To date, the best monitors for working with color have been and still are monitors with cathode ray tubes. But their era has passed. The time for laser monitors has not come yet, so we have to choose monitors with an LCD matrix.

So what are the characteristics of such a monitor?

1. Matrix type. There are several types of LCDs that differ in manufacturing technology and, as a result, in image reproduction quality. Today there are four types of matrices on the market: TN, PVA, MVA and IPS. For working with color, IPS matrices are best suited. This type of LCD matrix has the most correct color reproduction, but also the highest cost. Monitors with PVA and MVA matrices are less suitable for image processing. The most common cheap TN matrices do not fit at all.

2. Viewing angle. It should be as wide as possible. In cheap matrices, the viewing angle is very narrow and even with a slight change in the viewing angle, the image begins to darken and the colors are distorted. The ISP LCD has the best viewing angle parameters.

3. The surface of the matrix. Despite the fashionable modern trend in the manufacture of glossy screens, this type of coating is not suitable for a monitor designed for working with images. The surface must be matt.

4. Backlight. For correct image processing, an important factor is the uniformity of the backlight. It should be perfectly flat over the entire surface, without bleeding around the edges. LED backlighting will be preferred. In this case, the monitor must reproduce a deep black color through which the matrix backlight shines through.

5. Size. Despite the fact that size is of secondary importance, its role in image processing, and especially retouching, should not be underestimated. The most user-friendly range is 22-26 inches diagonally. The most popular is the 24-inch diagonal.

6. Color gamut. The ability of the monitor to display a wider range of colors. Images on these monitors look richer than on conventional models. But there is a potential problem with this feature. If the main goal of a photographer is to process photographs and then upload them, for example, to the network or transfer them to someone on a digital medium, then the resulting beautiful juicy picture, when viewed on another monitor, will look sluggish and lifeless. Therefore, calibration of monitors with wide color gamut is mandatory.

Now that we have sorted out the requirements for a photographer's monitor, let's move on to an overview of the modern models on the market. We will deliberately omit the models of the expensive professional segment, the prices for which are beyond 1000 euros. Let's dwell on budget models of monitors, which, nevertheless, have very good characteristics and are popular with advanced photographers.

I hope this article will at least partially help in this choice.

Stay in touch!

For a long time, a huge number of photographers have taken many pictures of the area, nature and people. As a rule, in addition to the photos themselves, people also do their processing on a PC. It is worth saying that the photographer's computer must have certain technical parameters.

A lot of photographers do in order to get a high-quality picture of this or that object, terrain, and the like. In general, the final photo work should be successful. Several aspects immediately influence all this.

What affects the quality of the created photo during processing

It is worth paying attention, first of all, to the fact that the quality of the photo after processing will depend directly on the work of the processor in the PC that the person uses. For the photographer, processors that are ready to handle 3D are great. The second aspect that has an impact is the RAM of the gadget. It needs quite a lot of volume. However, the most important and necessary parameter in a device is the screen itself.

It is better to buy a monitor with a diagonal of 26 inches. A photographer on a large monitor can easily see any small details. As for the colors, they should be bright, rich and natural at the same time. Pay attention to the resolution of the monitor. As a rule, it cannot be lower than 1920 x 1080 pixels.

NEC MultiSync EA231WMi

As you already know, the monitor is of great importance for the photographer. After all, it is thanks to him that the user carries out the processing. Nowadays, NEC is considered one of the largest screen manufacturers. Only the prices of the company are quite high. But for your price, you get excellent color reproduction and stable performance.

Speaking specifically about the price of screens, they can range from $ 700 to $ 1,500. It all depends on the size of the diagonal. NEC MultiSync EA231WMi is considered to be the most affordable model in our time. Its diagonal is 23 inches. The resolution is 1920 by 1080 pixels. The monitor is ready to become indispensable at work. Plus, it can be used for other purposes as well.

Apple Thunderbolt Display A1407

The Apple company has recently been able to take a big step in the use of certain IPS matrices. Among all the screens that the company offers, the Apple Thunderbolt Display A1407 can be distinguished. Its diagonal is 27 inches. This size is great for working with photographs. And the monitor resolution is quite high.

We must also pay attention to the fact that it is our model that is ready to display 16 million colors. I must also say that the vertical and horizontal viewing angle of the screen is 178 degrees. Apple monitors have recently been very popular among a huge number of buyers.

Dell U2212HM

But if your budget is limited, then you will have to opt for a more budgetary monitor model. And the Dell U2212HM is directly related here. The display can be a wonderful combination of decent quality and low cost. The company used an E-IPS matrix during its creation. The user can buy this monitor today for $ 400.

The screen has a diagonal of 21.5 inches. Do not forget that the color rendition in our screen is slightly worse than in the models described above. A large number of photographers nowadays use another model from LG for processing. It costs $ 300. Only here there is one small drawback. It consists in the poor display quality of dark shades.

Matrix type and other parameters

The matrix plays a big role here. The most common matrices include TN, PVA, MVA, IPS. For working with color, it is better to take the latter. It is this type of screen that is ready to present the best color reproduction, wonderful viewing angles and much more. But the first option can only be suitable for watching movies, it also costs much less.

During photo processing, the very uniformity of the backlight is also important. There should also be no glare at the edges of the monitor. It is best to see black and deep color. In this regard, the best option would be LED-backlit devices. Don't forget about color gamut. This parameter characterizes the number of displayed colors. And the more, the better. Remember that you still need to pay attention to screen calibration and the presence of several presets for different tasks.

If we talk about the display surface, then it all depends on the user's preferences. The glossy surface is ready to give a more contrasting image, however, it also gives out glare. But the screen with a matte surface will give more convenience in work, although it is not ready to convey all the subtleties of colors. In the end, it should be added that when buying a monitor for a photographer, buyers should give preference to models with digital connectors for DVI or HDMI. After all, a high-quality photo also depends on the interface.

Video: the best monitor for a photographer 2017

The availability of professional design equipment is an important condition for creating quality products, so in this article we will pay attention to the issue of choosing a monitor.

What are the differences from conventional monitors

A monitor is an indispensable tool for creating high-quality images, in particular, it is indispensable for designers.

What should this device be like if you need to work with Photoshop every day?

Of course, functional, it is normal to convey colors, their depth, and most importantly - to display well the natural look of the picture.

Thanks to this device, it is possible to make retouching and color correction, develop a menu and a template for a particular portal.

Simply put, your screen is responsible for creating each visual element.

It is very important to choose a multifunctional model that meets all your requirements.

At the same time, of course, it should not be fabulously expensive.

True, you should not rush to the old models with an electro-ray tube.

They have insufficient light transmission, so the image may differ significantly from the intended one.

This fact is the main disadvantage.

Among the main cautions when buying - a monitor for designers should not tire the eyes, because a specialist will spend a lot of time at it.

Let's try to understand the complex world of computer technology and determine which monitor is the best fit.

General rules for choosing a quality monitor

When looking through the catalog, it is important to take into account all the nuances.

The monitor affects not only the process of completing tasks, but also the state of your body, including the health of the organs of vision.

What to consider when choosing in the first place:

  • LCD or CRT. Some people believe that the quality of all LCD screens is an order of magnitude higher than that of CRTs. Don't be so categorical! In fact, some CRTs reproduce color saturation very well and have a high viewing angle. There is no need to blindly follow the trend and buy the first LCD that comes across, giving it preference over CRT.
  • Gloss or dullness. It is best to polish photos in graphic editors on matte monitors. Glossy ones in most cases will do you a disservice - instead of an image, you will look into a kind of mirror
  • Size - this parameter plays an important role, but this in no way means that you need the largest display. Working on huge screens is like editing in a cinema, sitting in the front row - there is no way to capture the whole picture. It is better to visit a computer hardware store, find out basic information from consultants, carefully examine the devices and choose the optimal size for yourself. A smart purchase will last you longer.
  • Matrix type. If your choice fell on an LCD display, it is worth considering that they are divided by type, there are several types. Basically, they differ from each other only in some features.

These points are very important when purchasing a monitor for a designer.

LCD Screen Matrix Types:

  • TN is perhaps the most common type. Pros: Cheap, quick transition from white to black. There are also disadvantages: incorrect color rendering when changing the viewing angle, 6-bit color scheme.
  • MVA - like the previous one, is a fairly budgetary type. The advantages are: short response time, wider viewing angle, excellent contrast. Among the minuses is a rather low level of color rendering.
  • PVA is a modification of the previous type from Samsung. The pluses remain the same, but the price has decreased significantly.
  • IPS are the leaders of the collection. They stand out for their large viewing angle and smooth color changes. It is they who are considered one of the most profitable for design work.

Let's move on from theory to an overview of specific examples that will help you choose the ideal device for your ongoing work with editorial programs. Below are the popular models and their main characteristics.

As it is already clear, the Eizo ColorEdge CS2420 in terms of parameters is rather much inferior to the previous sample from Samsung.

The main advantage of this model is the accurate color reproduction and really stunning image reproduction that most designers will appreciate.

The Eizo ColorEdge CS2420 monitor is adjustable in height, tilt, and, of course, swivels. It's just the same pretty comfortable in everyday use.

Appearance

Eizo ColorEdge CS2420 is made in a simple style. However, it will be a good addition to the decor of any office.

Peculiarities

The model is good for its low energy consumption. From the negative - the lack of speakers.

As a result, the Eizo ColorEdge CS2420 can be called a rather suitable acquisition in its price segment.

However, you should not expect something supernatural, since the characteristics of the device are inferior to more powerful new developments.

To carry out projects of high complexity, it is worth choosing a different option.

A large number of photographers have been making a huge number of photographs of the area and nature for a long time. But besides this, as a rule, photographers process the captured frames on a computer. But it is worth paying attention to the fact that the photographer's computer must have certain technical parameters. Photographers do a lot in order to get a high-quality picture of a particular object, area, and so on. But in spite of everything, the final work with the photo should end quite successfully. This can be influenced by a number of aspects.

Aspects affecting the quality of the created photo during processing

First of all, it is worth paying attention to the fact that the weaving of the photo after processing will directly depend on the work of the processor in the computer that the photographer uses. It is worth noting that processors that can handle 3D are suitable for the photographer. The second aspect that can have an impact is the computer's RAM itself. It must have a large enough volume. But the most important thing in a computer that processes photos is the monitor itself. We recommend purchasing a monitor that is 26 "diagonal. On such a large monitor, the photographer will be able to see any small details. But the colors that the monitor reproduces should be as saturated, bright and at the same time natural. It is worth paying attention to the resolution of the screen itself. As a rule, it should be no lower than 1920 × 1080.

Monitors for the photographer

As a rule, the monitor is of great importance for the photographer. After all, it is with its help that the user processes photographs. Currently, the largest manufacturer of monitors is NEC. Monitors from this manufacturer are expensive. But they have excellent color reproduction and stable performance. The cost of such monitors currently ranges from $ 700 to $ 1,500.
