Pop vocal is a collective term that includes a huge variety of genres and styles, mainly song styles from blues and rock and roll to the current Chaotic and TranceCore. Often pop music was called "light" (even in the case of hard-n-heavy), but in our case it is not so. Stevie Wonder's vocals and his music cannot be called easy.

There are significant differences between pop vocals and classical (academic):

  • Firstly, pop vocal includes not only the technical techniques of classical and folk vocals, but also specific techniques that are unique to him;
  • Secondly, the goals and objectives of a pop vocalist are the search for "his" unique sound, the disclosure of a unique personal vocal, the definition of an original, perhaps even a unique manner of singing in order to most effectively convey the main idea of the song to the listener;
  • Thirdly, this type of vocal requires a clear diction that can convey the meaning of the words of the song, as well as the ability to quickly change the rhythm of breathing and “sing out” complex phrases;

The main techniques of pop vocals:

  • Split;
  • Drive (growling, roaring, hoarse voice, death vocals, etc.);
  • Overtone ("throat") singing;
  • subtone;
  • Glissando ("slide");
  • Falsetto;
  • Jodl ("Tyrolean singing");
  • Strobas;

Each technique has its own characteristics, and to comprehend them, specific exercises are needed that only a professional can give.

pop vocal

Pop vocal is a well-known type of pop singing, which includes a huge number of varieties of songs: folk singing, jazz, author's song, rock music. This direction includes a whole range of vocal skills. This type of vocal, first of all, is intended for singing on the stage, and the name pop vocal is often associated with public and light music.

Pop vocals, in comparison with classical vocals, are more inherent in such sound qualities as naturalness and accessibility.

jazz vocals

Great demands are made on a jazz vocalist - this is an ideal sense of proportion and rhythm, as well as excellent maneuverability of the vocal apparatus and skills for instant improvisation.

Jazz singing is impossible without penetration into the form and essence of the work. When performing, you need the ability to convey your perception of the theme and melody, the ability to change it, while not depriving the original harmony. Joint partnership with musicians is also important here.

rock vocals

Rock vocals are usually the work of a vocalist in a rock band. Rock vocals, unlike jazz singing, have a more emotional message. The main task of the performer is rather the semantic load of the work, and the vocal one goes somewhat into the background. However, despite this, a rock vocalist must have sufficient singing skills. It requires additional emotional enthusiasm, and absolute freedom with a share of musical swagger.

academic vocals

These regulations usually do not allow an academic performer to sing in other vocal genres. With experience, such a singer develops a specific vocal position, the voice acquires considerable strength and significant volume. However, with rare exceptions, academic vocalists can sing in other vocal genres if they make delivery easier.

Voice training is the use of vocal technique in practical life. The first thing with which the voice setting begins in vocal courses http://muz-school.ru/courses/kursy-vokala-peniya.html is with the student's breath setting. Mastering the breathing technique is necessary for any singer. First of all, the correct operation of the diaphragm is important, as this affects the correct vocal breathing and sound delivery. Then there is work with resonators. The vocalist must be aware of what instructions to follow in order to achieve the perfect sound. Singing should be easy.

Songs of this direction have a secular character and certain laws of performance. The goal of any pop singer is to find his own sound and create an original stage image.

Pop singing training includes a number of techniques and techniques:

  • splitting - another sound is added to a pure sound, for example, noise;

Every music lover invariably encounters the concept of vocals. Most assume that vocals are just singing. In part, this is true. But let's look at the question of what vocals are more broadly. Among other things, we will try to consider its main types.

What is vocal: definition

In general, if we turn to many explanatory dictionaries, there are quite a few interpretations of what vocal is. What does such a concept mean from the point of view, so to speak, of a musical scientific approach? In a general sense - the ability to sing, voice control, the art of singing, the ability to express certain emotions with a voice at a musical level, etc.

You can often come across an interpretation of understanding the essence of the question of what vocals are in music. Many musicologists, composers and even performers themselves call it the most sophisticated musical instrument capable of touching deep feelings and soul strings. Agree, it is the human voice that is capable of conveying an unimaginable number of emotional shades, which is not available to any of the known musical instruments.

Vocal types

So let's take a look at the vocals. What is the ability to master the voice musically in relation to different types of music, we will now see. Let's take a look at the most common classification.

The basis for the entire vocal school is the so-called classical vocal, which is sometimes called academic. There is no need to think that this is only an operatic voice, because classical music, like any other direction, implies different genres. As a rule, such a voice is characterized by incredible volume and depth, and in most cases does not involve singing into a microphone, since its use can cause severe distortion of the voice sounding in the speakers.

It was from academic vocals that the division of voices into corresponding groups began, differing in voice height, that is, the possibility of singing notes in a certain range and with a certain timbre. Here you have a soprano, a mezzo-soprano, a tenor, an alto, a baritone, and much more.

One of the most common can be called pop vocals. It is probably not necessary to explain what pop or pop music is. Here, the framework for staging the voice, corresponding to the classical one, is completely absent, although there are some requirements.

Unfortunately, today there are so many pop singers that many of them consider themselves vocalists, even without being able to sing, and all vocal parts are “levelled” using computer programs like Melodyne, which allows you to pull up any false note to the desired sound level. However, vocals are not so important for the stage, here the first place is rather given to music and rhythm. It is not surprising that pop vocals imply, so to speak, at least the ability to sing at least somehow. But there are many professional performers who still focus on the vocal perception of any composition.

One of the most difficult manifestations of voice control is jazz vocals. the voice of the singer and the singer? This is a very subtle possession of the voice in a very wide range, the ability to very accurately take dissonant notes with a transition, say, through an octave or more, but the main thing here is the ability to improvise. Actually, jazz music itself basically implies improvisation.

Now consider another type called rock vocals. Everyone knows what rock is - music is often very expressive. It is clear that "rock" vocals primarily imply expression and incredible dynamics. Without it, rock music itself looks "dry".

Vocals here are prevalent along with rhythm guitar. It is he who carries the charge of energy for which its fans love rock music. But here, too, there are caveats. It's no secret that rock ballads are recognized as the most melodic in the world. So a rock vocalist should not only be able to “turn on” the audience when rhythmic compositions are performed, but also convey all the notes of the mood of the ballad.

By the way, academic vocals have been used very often in rock lately. This is most often seen in Scandinavian bands and performers. Take at least the former vocalist of the famous Finnish named Tarja Turunen. Her voice, by almost all definitions, fits the classical production.

Vocalise

Separately, it is worth considering vocalization, since it is also a kind of vocals. In principle, the performance technique implies the use of only vowels such as “a”, “o”, “u”, “e”, etc. in singing. However, the seemingly simple performance technique is in many ways much more complicated than when using text.

One of the most striking examples is Pink Floyd's Great Gig In The Sky from the album Dark Side Of The Moon, which has become a classic of the genre. Even in the concert version, one can feel the skill and professionalism of the vocalists performing the main part. By the way, the group usually invites black women, because they have very specific voices, somewhat in common with the jazz school and the soul style.

Conclusion

Of course, this is not all that can be said about vocals. It remains to be added that if a person wants to learn how to sing and control his voice as flexibly as possible, more than one year should be devoted to classes, with everyday chants designed to develop the technique of performance, as well as significantly expand the boundaries of the range of sounds reproduced by the voice.
