How to get a lilac shade. Painter himself: how to make a purple color with your own hands from gouache and other types of dyes

Every person has ever thought about how this or that color is obtained from the artist. In fact, many shades are obtained with colorists.

Consider the process of obtaining purple: the primary colors are red, blue and yellow. It is when they are mixed that a wide variety of tones and shades are obtained.

Mention should be made of black and white. They don't come out of mixing, so it's worth considering that artists use these five base tones in their work.

What colors should be mixed?

For purple color just mix red and blue. Moreover, the shade of color will directly depend on the following factors:

  1. Saturation of original colors
  2. Their number and ratio.

When mixed, the main tone of purple is obtained.

Shades of dark purple

To get a dark purple tone, you can use two methods:

  1. Add some black to the red.
  2. Mix blue and red, and more than the first in ratio. You can adjust the black intensity of the desired shade.

Table shade of purple

Light purple is obtained by adding white to the base tone. A magenta tint can be made by changing the ratio in favor of red.

Gentle purple will turn out when mixing pink and blue paints. The scarlet shade of red and light blue give a beautiful burgundy shade of purple.

Mixing dark blue and red results in a rich eggplant tone.

Mixing Features

For different paints with different composition there are certain ways to mix them to get the tone we want.

How to make from watercolor?

When faced with this type of material, there is a problem with the saturation of the resulting color. To solve it, you will need the use of whitewash. In the event that they are not available, saturation can be adjusted by adding a certain amount of water.

From oil at home

Oil is more fluid than acrylic or watercolor. Therefore, the compositions must be mixed very carefully. You can call this a disadvantage, but it allows you to get uniform tones. With partial mixing, you can get multi-tone inserts.

There are three ways to mix oil paints: mechanical, color overlay and optical. In the first case, the process takes place in one container, and the saturation is regulated by adding basic tones. In the second case, strokes are applied to each other. In the third method, the paints are mixed directly on the treated surface, which allows you to get a more even tone.

How to get from acrylic?

They are universal and are used for many purposes - painting walls, drawing patterns on the ceiling, and so on. The composition adheres well to the treated surface. Buying all possible shades will be very expensive. For this reason, base colors are mixed.

To get the specific shade that you need, in the case of acrylic paints, you should use a special table that shows mixing options.

How much to add corrector?

The corrector is able to neutralize the unwanted shade from the resulting color. To facilitate the task, use the so-called Oswald's star. There are six colors - three basic and three additional.

If the ends of the star are connected with diagonal lines, then you get colors that neutralize each other. For instance, purple is able to neutralize the basic colors: green, red and yellow.

To enhance the color, you need to add a corrector below the color wheel.

In various fields of use, these correctors are also called mixtons.

UV for tattoo

The paint used is a powder that is "charged" by light and releases this energy in the form of a glow. With this combination, a luminous tattoo is obtained, and the desired color is achieved by adding a dye.

UV pigment is safe for humans. The composition does not cause allergies, but the paint should be tested to avoid undesirable consequences for the body.

Important! Why should you use UV pigment carefully? Any paint can cause an allergic reaction, so you need to be careful when choosing a pigment manufacturer.

In conclusion, we note that coloring is a very interesting science that allows you to give full rein to the artist's imagination. Getting purple and its various shades clearly illustrates this. Moreover, these methods work not only when writing works of art, but also for decorating rooms, interiors and stained-glass windows.

How to get purple by mixing paints

To get purple, you need to mix red and blue, or red and blue containing tones, the main thing is that they do not have a yellow undertone, which, as an additional color to purple, will give a grayish or brown undertone of the resulting paint.
Violet requires pure colors, and even then the result will be paler than its derivatives, and if it is necessary to lighten and darken the paint, then the resulting product will be of the third order and even paler. Based on this, it is better to create shades of purple from the purple paint available in the kit.

How to get purple dye?

Mix red and blue to get dark purple
Bright red and rich, dark indigo result in a dark, almost black purple. Moreover, even diluting it with white, it will reluctantly lighten to a gray-violet hue.

Dark blue "devours" all the lightness and saturation of the brightness-red, and even if we increase the influence of the second (add red to the resulting purple tone), we will not get purple or saturated red-violet, but almost barely distinguishable in its dimming eggplant color. If it is diluted with white, we get a gray-red-violet.

Mix red and blue to get medium purple

Intense reds and intense blues result in a medium purple that is much more sensitive to the addition of undertones.

From medium purple, you can already get rich plum and its lighter colors:

Mixing pink and blue colors we get lilac, amethyst
To achieve lighter yet richer shades of purple, the best way to get it is to mix warm pink and deep blue, resulting in a light lilac that is easy to whiten and does not lose its intensity to a large extent.

So you can create a whole range of pastel colors.
Red will help you achieve amethyst tones.

How to mix colors to get vibrant shades of purple?

All shades of purple obtained with the help of red and blue containing tones do not differ in brightness. Therefore, in a set of 12 colors there is always a bright lilac from which you can build the entire diverse range that the purple palette contains.
A rich, cool dark purple can be obtained by mixing bright purple and dark indigo.

Intense blue-violet or cornflower blue is obtained by mixing with blue.

Pronounced amethyst is made from warm pink.

Purple, berry - from the main tone + rich red.

Bright cormorant will be a derivative of lilac + red + indigo.

You should not use yellow and all yellow-containing tones (orange, green, brown, etc.) in the construction of shades of purple, as it is an additional color, as a result of mixing which we will get brown.

Light shades are also much more convenient to obtain from the paint available in the arsenal.

Black is best not used for dark purples, as it quickly clogs the shade to dark gray. For this, dark indigo is more suitable.

How to get purple by mixing paints
How to get purple? You just need to mix red and blue paint, depending on their tones, you will get your own color. How else can you? A photo

Ever since school days, everyone knows how to get purple - you need to combine red and blue. But the result is not always usable - sometimes the shade is too dark or grayish. Professionals have their own secrets for creating purple when mixing paints, you should familiarize yourself with them.

Purple in the color palette

Purple is not a base color: only red, yellow, blue, white and black are included. Simply put, it can be obtained by mixing other colors, which is what artists use when painting. The base colors of the palette cannot be produced by combining other shades.

According to chromotherapy, purple has a beneficial effect on the human body, especially on the senses. Visualization of this color leads to an increase in the production of endorphins - hormones of joy. Purple also helps with insomnia, migraines, and nervous disorders due to its calming effect. It is believed that it has a positive effect on the immune system, the pituitary gland, and the organs of vision. But you should not overload the space with this shade - it can provoke melancholy.

History reference

Violet tone has always symbolized mystery, mysticism. Its history has royal "roots" - in Byzantium, the color was considered imperial, in England only royal persons and members of their families had the right to wear purple clothes. Purple robes are still used by Catholic bishops, and in the Middle Ages the shade was the main one in decorating cathedrals.

An easy way to get purple

In coloring, there is a simple method that allows you to produce a purple tone. To do this, you need to take in equal proportions red and blue watercolor or acrylic paint, gouache, mix them together. Mix the dyes carefully so that there are no streaks left. The depth and brightness of the resulting paint will depend on the tones of the original colors, the accuracy of calculating the proportions. Sometimes the artist does get purple - it is very similar to purple, but has a more pronounced red glow.

Various shades of purple

There are many ways to make new paint, there are many options. With simple actions, you can get shades - from dark to light purple, lilac, violet, cold purple, etc. This is especially important for artists who use a rich color palette.

Light purple and pale purple from paints, gouache

It is difficult to bring the desired shade to the ideal. Usually it is obtained empirically, drawing strokes on paper, adding components to the desired result. It is especially difficult for those who mix tones for tinting walls - you need to act carefully. You can not mix paints in large proportions and apply them immediately to the canvas. A preliminary test is required.

You can get light shades of purple by combining pink and blue. The easiest way is to take ready-made pink gouache or watercolor, put a couple of drops on a plastic palette, and then add blue paint. There is a more difficult option when blue and pink are not available. Then they take red and blue paints, dilute them with white and get the corresponding tones. Further, when they are connected, a soft purple color scheme comes out.

The most beautiful shades come out when using these colors:

  • red cobalt;
  • azure;
  • ultramarine;
  • phthalocyanine.

You need to make a muted purple color in a different way. This will require a cold red tone (for example, alizarin). Black paint is introduced into it in small portions. After obtaining a rich purple color, it is strongly diluted with whitewash or ordinary white gouache. This will allow you to get different shades of purple up to pastel.

Dark purple color from paint, gouache

Artists use a special spatula to mix tones - a palette knife. It allows you to perfectly mix gouache without stripes, spots in the future drawing. A spatula is especially useful for connecting bright purple flowers, dark shades.

The easiest way to create a rich color is to mix cool shades of blue and red. But if they have warmer reflections, there is a risk of getting a poor-quality result. The finished paint may have a brown or gray tint. In this case, the introduction of a small amount of black gouache will help correct the situation.

Mixing cool red and black will give a purple color even without blue paint. The main thing is to use only deep black tones (black resin and others). Black should be introduced slowly, in very small portions. It strongly absorbs red and is required in a minimal amount.

To get the brightest purple tone, you can combine the colors cyan (blue) and magenta. When diluted with whitewash, lighter shades will come out. On the contrary, the finished purple can be "thickened" by the introduction of black gouache.

Purple colour

He is very fond of designers, artists, decorators and even cooks. To use a white palette or an ordinary white ceramic plate (so that there is no tone distortion). Masters often carry out such work on a white canvas.

Lilac is considered a cool shade, so it can also be obtained by mixing cold blue and red tones. Next, the color must be whitened to produce the desired shade. If the finished color shines pink, reddish, more blue or a drop of black is introduced. The latter perfectly absorbs unnecessary redness.

purple color

Purple is the color of violet, lavender, dark lilac inflorescences. It resembles purple and lilac, but is distinguished by a large number of red tones. Professionals have a way to get a real purple hue. To do this, the original red should have a minimum of orange reflection. Pale lilac will come out as a result of the combination of pink, white and ready-made purple flowers. This tone will resemble the shade of the evening sky. By introducing new portions of blue, white, pink and red colors, the following tones are obtained:

  • opera mauve;
  • pink-lilac with gray;
  • blue-lilac.

In general, all purple tones are divided into categories "K" and "C". In the first, red dominates, in the second - blue. Lavender gray is obtained by introducing pink and black.

Shades of purple - palette

There is a huge variety of purple shades that are widely used in clothing and interior design. In total, artists use more than 200 tones, where there are bright, delicate, grayish, cold and warm, dull and saturated colors. Their names vary from simple to bizarre. Here are the most popular:

  • dark - eggplant, mulberry, plum, blackcurrant, figs, prunes, blackberries, raisins;
  • dark cold - electric violet, indigo, dark purple;
  • fuchsia group - cyclamen, thundercloud, crimson;
  • a group of purples - beets, peony, phlox;
  • light - crocus, purple, mallow, orchid, lilac, mov, iris, hyacinth;
  • the lightest - amethyst, pansies, heather, pearls.

To obtain a number of original shades, experts advise introducing gray, pink, brown and even orange colors - no need to be afraid of experiments.

Color Mixing Chart

Artists are well aware of which colors of paints or pencils blend well with each other, and which ones give ugly tones. The former are called chromatic (they are next to each other in the circle of compatibility), the latter are called achromatic (they are located far from each other). Therefore, before starting to combine colors, it is important to familiarize yourself with the table, as well as to clarify the chemical composition of the paints - it should be similar.

Regarding purple tones, it looks like this:

Features of working with watercolor, oil paints, gouache

Gouache is easier to work with than other types of paints. This type of color scheme is rich, deeply pigmented, so adjusting the shade of purple is not difficult. It must be remembered that when dried, gouache brightens a little, so the desired shade should be made a little darker. The watercolor has a translucent texture. In this case, you can increase the “pallor” of the paint without white, using ordinary water. But in the drawing, watercolor does not look as bright as gouache.

Oil paints are more difficult to work with, they have a special structure and high fluidity. Mix the composition should be especially careful so that all layers are combined into a single whole. Artists also use other methods of mixing oil - the imposition of tones, optical technique. In the first case, strokes are applied to each other, in the second, the paint is mixed directly on the canvas. Beginners should start working on creating original shades with gouache - classes will turn out to be exciting and will appeal to children and adults!

Many artists are faced with a situation where the tube with the right paint runs out, and it is inconvenient or just too lazy to go to the store. How to get out of this situation? It turns out that you can get the desired shade by mixing certain colors. You just need to know what colors to mix to get purple or another missing shade. Many painters know from school that purple and many other colors are secondary, and you can get them by mixing primary colors. In this case, red and blue.

With a brush, apply a little red paint to the palette. After rinsing the brush, take the same amount of blue and mix the colors thoroughly. Also, every professional artist knows what colors to mix to get a lighter shade of purple. For this, not red, but pink paint is taken. After mixing on the palette, you can apply paint to the canvas, adjusting the color by adding one or another shade.

Are there any other tips on what colors to mix to get purple? Indeed, you can do it differently: you need to take purple paint and mix it thoroughly with white. Remember to rinse the brush each time you change colors. By varying the amount of white paint, you can get the desired shade of varying degrees of intensity. It is worth noting that any gamut, when mixed with red, gives purple. Every artist always has a large selection of colors and shades in stock, so try mixing red (azure) ultramarine and phthalocyanine blue. It will turn out interesting more calm and muffled. You can also mix black paint with alizarin red. You will get a slightly dark purple gamma of pure and beautiful color.

When a child draws, he always asks about what colors should be mixed to get a purple tint or some other, and he should definitely be helped with this. Maybe in the future he will be a professional and draw his dad or mom. Little children always love to mix things up with something, and let it be paints. Knowing which colors to mix to get purple or another shade will help your little one not only entertain themselves with experiments, but also develop their aesthetic taste. Someday, perhaps, artists will consult with him when they paint pictures. After all, many of them are able to perfectly depict the contours, but they have difficulty with the selection of colors.

The question of what colors need to be mixed to get blue is usually asked by non-professionals, because real artists know that this range is basic and cannot be obtained in its pure form by mixing some shades. Many people think that you can mix yellow and green to get blue, but this is not true. A mixture of these two colors will give not a blue, but a light green tint. But if you try to take a lot of blue and a little purple, you can enjoy a beautiful bluish tint in your drawing.

Creating purple by mixing other colors of paint is not always possible. We've been taught since high school that blue and red are mixed together to make purple, although, contrary to expectations, combinations of these colors usually result in a dull maroon or purple-gray hue.

In this article, you will learn the tricks with which you can get the perfect lilac and purple shades.

Primary colors of the spectrum

When mixing blue and red paint to get purple, remember that:

  1. If you add more red, you get a crimson hue;
  2. If you add more blue paint, then you can make purple, which will tend more towards a rich purple color;
  3. By mixing various combinations of pure colors, you can get a purple color of a different shade;
  4. It is more correct to use red, but a cold shade. If you take a warm red, which is close to (orange), then in this case you get a brown color;
  5. Blue paint with a greenish tint should be avoided.

How to get purple with cyan, blue or magenta

1. First you need to buy magenta. The main reason why mixing blue and red inks does not produce the desired vibrant purple color is that red ink absorbs blue and green, while blue ink absorbs both green and red.

This is explained by the fact that the eyes perceive color as a combination of blue, green and red (for this reason, 3 primary colors stand out), although there is some blue and red that the eyes can perceive, which is why the brain, which interprets the combination of colors, considers this purple almost black.

If you look at it from the other side, then magenta, which absorbs exclusively green light, allows our vision to see a significant part of the red and blue color. If it is mixed with a small amount of blue or cyan, which only absorbs red light, your brain will get a strong signal from the nerve endings and a slightly weaker signal from the nerve endings that are sensitive to red. Thus, a person sees a purple color!

  • Magenta is one of the main "subtractive" colors used in printers and graphic design (along with cyan and yellow). You need to look for paint that contains PV19 or PR122 pigment, but not PW (white) or PB (blue).
  • When buying art ink, it can be compared to magenta from printer ink. You need to print a sample and take it to the store with you.
  • It is known that magenta belongs to the main color and cannot be obtained by mixing other colors. If, for example, magenta is mixed with yellow, you get a whole range of orange and red shades. When magenta is mixed in varying proportions with cyan, a variety of purple/blue hues will come out.

2. Next, you need to mix the magenta with the turquoise or bright blue that you have. Any blue or cyan will do, as long as it's not greenish or muted. First, add a little blue and add a little more until you get the desired shade of purple. Be extremely careful, do not get dirty, as the task is not easy.

How to get purple from pure blue and red

1. First, you need to determine if your blue and red colors are "pure". Mixing blue and red does not always give the desired shade due to the fact that the paint may not consist of one, but of different colors.

For example, a tube of red paint contains both yellow and orange pigments, while a tube of blue paint contains yellow and red. When blues are mixed with reds that aren't "clean", you end up with a dirty purple or brown color.

  • It is necessary to choose a red paint, in which there are no yellow and orange shades, because when these colors are mixed with blue, a brown color is created.
  • We are looking for blue paint without a green and yellow tint.
  • When you are not sure that you have clean paint, then you need to check it. You need to pour it a little on the palette and add a little white, which helps to see the real composition of the pigments. The red should turn pink and the blue should turn blue.

2. Next, you need to mix pure red with blue. Equal amounts of blue and red paint, pour on the palette and use a brush to mix them well and get a rich purple hue as a result.

  • To create a purple color that will be very similar to purple, you need to add additional blue paint.
  • If you add more red paint, you will see a purple color with a pinkish warm tint.

  1. White paint needs to be added. It doesn't matter how you are: from blue and red or magenta, if necessary, it can be lightened and made brighter by adding white. First you need to add a small amount of paint, then stir it until the desired shade is obtained. If you add the same amount of white to purple paint, you get a pastel color.
  2. Add black paint. If black is added to purple, it will turn out to make the color deeper, namely, a rich dark purple. It is necessary to mix in small portions so as not to get the color too dark, because it will be quite difficult to return the original shade later.
  3. Mixing white and black. This combination will give a lavender-grayish color, while the shade will depend only on you. Lavender color, it is possible to give a pinkish tint, for this you need to add red and magenta, or a lilac tint - by adding cyan or blue.

When mixing paints, you need to follow some rules:

  • If you need to scoop paint from a container, you should always use a clean dish or a small ladle so as not to spoil the pure shade. Since then it will not be possible to use it both in its pure form and for mixing, because an unpredictable result may result;
  • To obtain the desired color, experts advise carefully mixing paints. This is due to the fact that it is always possible to add more paint, but you cannot remove what has already been added.
  • Also remember that all colors should be thoroughly mixed until a uniform shade is formed; components of shades cannot even be left on the edge of the container. Otherwise, during walls and other interior items or drawing, you can accidentally hook the edge of the container and thus put a dirty spot on the surface to be treated.
  • And the last shade obtained must be checked not only on the palette, but also, accordingly, on the surface on which it is planned to apply the paint.

Let a beginner now draw the most banal landscape, we will get a blue sky, green grass, a yellow sun, a brown house, a red flower, etc. at the end. That is, a person clearly knows what color the grass, sky and everything else is, and paints them with exclusively pure colors available in the set of colors. However, he does not take into account, for example, the fact that these colors under different lighting conditions can have many shades, and they must be achieved by mixing paints. In the same way, one additional color can be obtained from several basic colors.

The basic colors that cannot be obtained by any mixing are yellow, red and blue. There are also so-called neutral and white. All the rest can be classified as additional, since they can be achieved by mixing two or three basic colors. And the addition of neutrals will give a darker or lighter shade. For example, how to get purple color? It suddenly wasn’t in your paint box, but you need it. To do this, mix a little red on the palette and a little. Something has already happened. Maybe not exactly what you wanted, but it's easy to fix. For this, there are proportions for mixing paints. If your purple turned out with a reddish tint, then you just need to mix a little blue into it. And you need to do this until you achieve exactly the shade that you need. If we “went through” with blue, then we add more red.

So you get but maybe it turned out too dark? How to get a lighter shade? This is where neutral white comes in. Take it just a little, literally at the tip of the brush, and mix it with what you already have. As you can see, the shade has become much lighter. The more white, the lighter and softer your purple will turn out. Suppose you are drawing an ordinary flower. If you paint its petals with a solid color, it will look flat. To "revive" it, you need to determine where it will have the lightest and darkest areas. It would be logical to assume that the lighter shade of the petals will be closer to the outer edge, and the darkest - to the middle and between the petals. How to get purple color in dark tones? Very simple: mix red with blue and add a drop of black there. In the shade that you got when mixing with white, it is better not to touch it, otherwise you will just get a dirty daub. Make a dark tone separately.

So, the flower is painted over with the main color, and we have determined its light and dark areas. Take a light tone and walk it along the outer edge of each petal, literally in one stroke. Now type a dark shade on the brush and go along their bottom in the same way. With the same tone, “separate” the petals from one another. It is not necessary to completely circle them, especially in those places where you have outlined the lightest areas. The closer to light, the thinner and more transparent the shadows between the petals should be. Now, knowing how to get it, you can experiment with it, as well as with other colors, creating not flat, but rather voluminous, almost lively images.
