Breathing at pop vocal lessons

Correct breathing is the foundation on which you can build a building in any architectural style or build a voice for singing in various musical directions: pop vocals, jazz vocals, classical vocals, etc. If you hear a strong volumetric voice from a singer, then this is not so much natural data as a good breath formulation. It is these voices that we remember, are able to influence us, and we want to imitate them.

Correct use of the breathing apparatus makes it possible not only to sing long phrases in one breath, but, most importantly, opens up new possibilities for your voice. Using the abdominal muscles and diaphragm during pop singing relieves stress and pressure (pinching) from the throat muscles. Due to this, the throat will never get tired, you will not be able to break your voice and give it the opportunity to develop both up and down equally easily. In vocal lessons, you will master special exercises for developing the muscles that are responsible for supporting the singing. Read more about this on the Breath Setting page.

Voice staging and its development in pop vocal lessons

What is the difference between voice training for pop vocals and voice training for other types of singing in our vocal lessons, you can read here. The exercises that develop the voice for pop singing and the exercises that prepare the voice for jazz singing or academic vocals are the same. But in different types of singing, a different presentation of sound, different techniques of sound production are used. Without special training in vocal lessons, you will not be able to develop your voice range and master various vocal techniques. This means that you can sing only the simplest (often primitive) pop songs, provided that the tonality of the song is convenient for you, the melody range is small and the manner of performance is semi-recitative. High-quality pop vocal implies a strong developed vocalist's voice with great technical freedom of performance.

Often, at the first stage of teaching pop vocal, our students, aimed at professional development, are engaged in voice production with our academic vocal teachers. Indeed, performing on theatrical stage, academic singers have to sing without a microphone, accompanied by a large symphony orchestra. In this mode of singing, your voice will withstand the load only if you train it correctly in the classroom. Most often, modern pop performers cannot be heard without a microphone at all. Because from the very beginning they are accustomed to singing into a microphone without support, without the correct setting of the voice. That is why we recommend that our students sing without a microphone most of the time during pop vocal lessons in order to properly tune the breathing-vocal apparatus so that your voice is not afraid of any stress and any conditions of singing. Read more about this in the article Working with a microphone in pop vocal lessons.

Vocal techniques of singing in pop vocal

The simplest technique in pop singing (as in academic singing) and the most difficult at the same time is cantilena (Italian cantilena, from Latin cantilena - singing), which means the most melodious sound, a smooth smooth transition from one sound to another. This is a basic technique, something that you begin to practice already in the first lessons of pop vocal. Only after you have mastered this singing technique can you move on to learning other singing techniques. Cantilena translates as singing. Singing is precisely the mastery of the smooth and melodious sound of the voice.

In modern pop music, there are many directions that involve the mastery of various other singing techniques:

Rap- this is a rhythmic recitative against the background of instrumental accompaniment. The part of the soloist - rapper assumes a virtuoso mastery of the voice within the spoken range. Often the unprofessional approach of the performer to recitation leads to the fact that the voice sits down and the throat begins to ache. We urge you to take this seriously and master a different manner of recitation, with the help of which the load from the throat is completely relieved. In a pop vocal lesson, our teacher will help you master the techniques of rap.

R'n'B (R&B) the music uses soft, melodic vocals derived from the manner of singing of African Americans. In comparison with ordinary pop music, it requires a more virtuoso mastery of the voice, greater voice mobility.

Soul- one of the directions of jazz music. In modern pop music of a calm, measured nature, one can often hear the influence of this jazz style. Soul relies on the blues scale and blues harmonies, hence the vocal techniques of performance - slipping intonations, understated scale steps, glissando, etc.

Rock, metal- Styles such as death, black, thrash and doom metal, grindcore, deathcore, screamo, emocore, imply mastery of growling and screaming (read on the page Types of singing). With our singing teachers in pop vocal lesson, you can easily master these vocal techniques.

Do not forget that any vocal techniques should be mastered only after you have mastered the correct formulation of a clear voice!

Do I need to develop my ear to practice pop vocal?

If you have an undeveloped ear for music, you need to develop it regardless of what kind of vocals you are going to do: pop vocals, jazz vocals, folk vocals, academic vocals. We all understand that if we do not hit the notes, we cannot repeat the melody exactly, then the singing will not work either.

If you are doing vocals for yourself, want to sing karaoke, then you do not have to take a whole course in solfeggio (mastering musical literacy). Just vocal solfeggio is enough, with the help of which you develop stable coordination between hearing and voice.

In the same case, if you want to professionally engage in pop vocals, you definitely need to master the musical literacy and develop an ear for music. Read more about this on the pages Musical literacy and Development of musical ear.

How pop vocal lessons are built

The main stage of teaching pop vocal is mastering vocal breathing (see the article Breathing Arrangement) and voice development (see the article Voice Development). If you want to learn how to sing, then you cannot skip this very important stage of teaching pop vocal. In a pop vocal lesson, a professional vocal teacher is engaged in staging your breath and voice. So, the first and main part of the pop vocal lesson is devoted to special vocal exercises on which your breathing and voice are built. Read more about breath setting and voice setting on the Breathing setting and voice setting page.

After mastering the fundamental principles of pop singing in our vocal lessons, you begin to learn the repertoire that you would like to sing and which will help you in mastering the technique of pop singing: pop songs of rock, pop and other directions, romances, songs from films and cartoons. It is this repertoire that you will master in pop vocal lessons. The mastering of the pop vocal repertoire takes place with the use of minus phonograms, as well as with live accompaniment.

Working with a microphone in pop vocal lessons

We advise you to start working with a microphone only after a good mastery of the basic principles of singing: setting your voice and breathing. If you can sing without a microphone in a strong, bright and free voice without getting tired, then with a microphone it will not be difficult for you to sing at all, because it facilitates the singing process. In our pop vocal lessons, you will gain the necessary microphone singing skills as well as the experience of recording your vocals in a professional recording studio. Read more about working with a microphone on the page Working in the studio for recording vocals.

Concert performances

The variety repertoire is very popular with the public. Therefore, our students perform at our concerts dedicated to the performance of pop music. Concert performance is an important stage in pop vocal training. You will gain an irreplaceable experience of public speaking and test your strength and the result of vocal training.

Vocal Basics

Pop vocals - pop singing combines many song directions, unites the entire palette of vocal art. Pop vocal, first of all, implies singing from the stage, but the concept of pop vocal, as a rule, is associated with easy and understandable music. In pop vocals, you can hear both folk motives and elements of jazz, this is also the author's song and elements of rock music. Pop vocals differ from academic vocals in a more open and more natural sound. However, singing skills, correct posture and support*("*" - see the glossary of terms) sound is as necessary in pop vocals as in academic.

The main difference between pop vocal and academic and folk is in the goals and objectives of the vocalist. The fact is that academic and folk singers always work within the framework of a certain canon or regulated sound, and it is not accepted for them to deviate from the norm. The task of pop vocals is different - in finding their own original sound, their own characteristic, easily recognizable demeanor, as well as a stage image. Thus, the main specificity of pop vocal is the search and formation of one's own inimitable, unique voice of the vocalist.

This process is in many ways analogous to how pop instrumentalists seek "their own sound." Of course, in order to achieve this goal and find your original style of singing, you need to master a fairly wide range * techniques. So, for example, in pop vocals, in contrast to folk and classical, intelligible diction* because words are one of the essential ingredients of any good song.

Also, a feature of pop singing is that in pop songs you can much more often find phrases that are difficult to sing, which require a quick change of breath from the performer.

Pop vocals combine the technique of academic vocal and folk singing, as well as a number of specific techniques that are characteristic of the stage. Sometimes many who are just beginning to comprehend the basics of singing technique, involuntarily, and sometimes consciously, try to imitate their favorite pop performers, blindly copying their manner of singing. As practice shows, not everyone benefits from this in the future. Everything here is individual: for some, the birth of a beautiful singing voice will be a happy surprise, while for others it will be the result of long and painstaking work.

Amazing Nearby:

Pop vocal can be considered a kind of folk vocal: as it crawled out of the throat ... and so it happened. This is a strong simplification, because any performer needs to work on himself, but the main reliance is still on nature, and not well-trained skill.

I would not say that the difference is in who got up earlier - that and opera-vocal slippers. At a music school, they can give the rudiments of a general vocal culture, but they really begin to teach already at the conservatory, because young men need to go through a breakdown in their voices, and even girls' vocal abilities can be clearly discerned no earlier than puberty.

First of all, breathing is different. When teaching academic vocal on the ability to delay it and release it in strictly metered portions, it takes quite a lot of time. Exercises in which you need to perform each sound gradually increasing / decreasing the power or abruptly cutting it off is a routine, daily matter, like a sports warm-up. You have to breathe with your stomach and slowly pump the press (this is not a joke), holding the flow of air with your abdominal muscles, and only then dispose of the air that has reached your throat with the throat.

In pop singing, the entire load goes to the throat, the abdominal muscles only work by pure chance. Because the airflow is different, the vibrations of the vocal cords resonate differently. The voice not only loses in the range, this is not a fact, but it becomes different, often very flat compared to how it would sound in an operatic vocals.

For example, I propose to compare the singing of Marcela Detroit in her famous hit and in the program "Pop Star - to the Opera Star", where she took a short course in opera vocals and, on the instructions of the mentor, "swung" at "Casta Diva". I’ll make a reservation right away that you cannot "look through the magnifying glass" the singing of an amateur and compare it with the work of a professional who at least graduated from the conservatory, and even more so with the magnificent Maria Callas. Let's note the main thing: the voice became different, sometimes unrecognizable.

Academic singers learn to transition smoothly between registers. This problem has existed for the last two hundred years - with the arrival of performers in the opera. In pop music, most often you do not need to go anywhere, there are no uncomfortable notes or jumps, craftsmen like Agnetha Feltskog are an exception. One of the secret of the unfading fame of ABBA is that many melodies only seem unpretentious, but no one intentionally simplified them, for the sake of vocal convenience they did not put the muse in the Procrustean bed of one register or convenient intervals. There are many more people who wanted to sing cover versions of ABBA's songs among their colleagues in the pop workshop than those who managed to realize their dreams. However, even such an uncompromising stage is far from the physical exertion that academic vocalists have to overcome.

ZUBR1961:

Academic and pop vocals have different vocal techniques, different breathing and different work with a resonator, a sounding body.

In classical vocals, a high vocal position, the work of the nasopharynx, diaphragm, support - in the first place, and in pop vocal, the chest resonator and ligaments (open "throat" sound) work.

Lyaxander:

Academic vocal is an earlier form of singing training. Then there were no microphones, different sound amplifiers, let alone plywood. The singers strove to make their voices sound clear, powerful, even, strong and loud. So that it is well and clearly heard at the farthest ends of the auditorium. Breathing techniques, various exercises - everything was done for this. This is certainly good for a pop vocalist, but this is not the main thing in the stage. If in the first case, the singer seeks to "fit" into certain frameworks, then in the case of pop vocal, the performer seeks to reveal these very frameworks. Therefore, he seeks to reveal his individuality, to show in singing something of his own, inherent in him. The artistry of performance, manner, this is the main thing here. We can say that this is something more creative. The main thing here is to reveal the individuality of the artist, to find his own style of performance. Show your strengths in vocals. And even if he does not have a singing voice, but due to his individuality of its disclosure, he can convey the idea of the song to the listener. Having painted it with my own strokes and intonations. It is not necessary to have a singing voice here. You can recall, for example, such artists as Leonid Utyosov or Mark Bernes, who, precisely due to their individuality and its disclosure, achieved success in performing a pop song and popularity among listeners. Or, for example, Yuri Antonov, a well-known melodic composer and singer, beloved by many. I remember he said something, something like this: I didn’t start learning to sing academically, so as not to “kill my individuality,” I am writing to memory. Maybe the words were slightly different, but the meaning is the same. And indeed, Yuri does not possess some super strong and powerful voice ... But! At the same time, he sings his songs better than anyone! Feels the song, its melody. In this case, because he is its creator, author. And it brings to the listener its idea and its beauty. In general, academically, it is clean, even, powerful ... in technique, "as expected", let's say, without any decorations. Pop vocal is when there is more creativity and freedom in performance and less "frames". Individuality: own moves, strokes, colors, decorations and other "tricks". You can even add that composers, for example, even know which of the artists to offer which song. So that the "CHIP" of the performer sounded and played in it.

To the question: what are the main differences between academic and pop vocals, the director of the "Music School for Adults" Ekaterina Zaboronok answers:

- academic vocals are designed for the acoustic propagation of vocal sound, pop vocals are designed for the propagation of vocal sound using musical technical equipment

- in academic vocal it is not permissible to extract sound in a speech vocal position, on stage this is a common technique

- the final formation of sound in the front part is radically different

- in academic vocal, the larynx is predominantly in a low position (a state of yawn in the neck), in pop vocal, a high position of the larynx is permissible

- in academic vocals, strobass is practically not used

- the aesthetics of clothes are different

- in academic vocal, the performer perceives his sound as reflected from resonators, in pop vocalist he perceives his sound coming out of the speakers.

- in academic vocals, unlike pop singing, singing on

- academic vocalists usually perform works accompanied by a piano or symphony orchestra, pop vocalists often use phonogram in their performances.

- academic vocalists often sing from notes, pop performers learn songs by heart

- academic singing cannot sound on a sub-recorded sound, pop singing allows this technique
