How to write about places. How to make a description interesting. "Gormenghast" - Mervyn Peake. "Eugene Onegin" - Alexander Pushkin

(estimates: 1 , average: 5,00 out of 5)

In the previous article you learned about. Now it's time to learn how to write about places, because every event happens somewhere. The reader always wants to know what this “somewhere” looks like and what it is like. Sometimes a few paragraphs are enough to describe the area, and sometimes it may take several pages to recreate the atmosphere of the city. In this case, one cannot do without knowing some of the nuances of how to write about places. What if you need to write an entire article on a travel topic?

Writing about places is not as easy as it seems

…And the reason is that we can talk about our travels for hours – because it’s interesting to us ourselves. On the other hand, try to imagine yourself in the shoes of your interlocutor: how boring it is to listen to the endless speech of a tourist who is trying to tell you absolutely every detail of the trip. Agree, neither the listener nor the reader wants to know everything, but only some of the most delicious details.

There is no need to tell the reader the obvious. Everyone knows that Venice has canals, and the Grand Canyon looks absolutely stunning. But if an attraction breaks down at Disneyland, this will certainly interest the reader. The details should be interesting, but not common knowledge.

In addition, many authors who write about places use too many banal and overly artificial epithets. Remember when in last time V real life did you use the words “amazing”, “drunk”, “lovely”? Almost everything Beautiful places look “quaint”, and the town is sure to “stick” to the slope or foot of the mountain. In villages you will find many “quiet corners”, usually “half-forgotten”, etc. All this is nothing more than standard phrases and banal associations that will only worsen your material.

Style

Carefully choose the words you use to describe the area. It happens that this or that phrase just asks to be included in the text - which means it’s worth thinking about, perhaps this is one of those pests that only clog up the article.

There is nothing worse than artificial or pompous phrases. After you write something, read it out loud and evaluate how casual the sentence sounds. If you want to describe a place in a special way, look for fresh, original metaphors and epithets. Do not use speech structures popular in the press - they are most often empty, banal and lifeless.

Be picky about what you write. Don't tell the reader common or uninteresting details. When describing the seashore, do not mention that it was strewn with stones and seagulls were soaring above it. If only for the simple reason that most authors do just that. Look for details that give the text new meaning, or just fun, interesting facts. Try to get a feel for the place you are writing about.

Practice, write articles about several places. To do this, you don’t have to go on a trip – just go to the nearest shopping mall or a sports complex. Before writing, it is important to understand the place: what is its peculiarity, what is its atmosphere. Look for the answer in the people who live or visit here. Include excerpts from interviews in your material: get people talking, and perhaps their story will become the climax of the article or essay.

Any person has encountered accumulated fatigue from everyday life, problems and other negativity. Holy places will help you get rid of this and fill your life with new strength and positive emotions. Find spiritual harmony You can if you go to the holy places of Russia. Among them, heritage monuments and spiritual and cultural centers: Solovki, Kizhi, Optina Pustyn, Diveevo, Pskov-Pechersk Monastery, Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, Nilova Pustyn.

Coast of Lake Seliger, Tver region

Nilo-Stolobenskaya desert. Photo source: kuzma-prutkoff.livejournal.com

Last, but not least, is the Nilova Hermitage. The history of this place dates back to the beginning of the 16th century, the founder is Reverend Neil. According to legend, when robbers attacked his cell, Nile came out with an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. Having begun to read the prayer, the robbers thought that he was surrounded by a large number of armed men, and then, in fear, they knelt before the Nile and began to beg for forgiveness.

After his death, the Nilo-Stolobensky Monastery was erected on Stolobny Island, where he lived for his last 27 years. At the present time, the monastery consists of the Epiphany Cathedral (the remains of St. Nile are buried), the Holy Cross and All Saints churches, the Church of St. John and the Intercession of the Virgin.

This is interesting:

During the years of Soviet power, the Nilo-Stolbenskaya hermitage managed to “transform” into:

1927-1939 - labor commune, colony for juvenile delinquents;
1939-1940 - camp for Polish prisoners of war;
1941-1945 - hospital;
1945-1960 - again a colony;
1960-1971 - nursing home;
1971-1990 - tourist center.

In 1990, the complex of the Nilo-Stolobenskaya desert was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1995, the relics of St. Neil were returned to the monastery.

At archaeological excavations On the territory of the monastery it was established that in the 18th century the largest workshop at that time for the production of pectoral crosses operated here.

IN Soviet time The remains of Leonty Magnitsky, the author of the first Russian textbook on arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry and the rudiments of algebra, a scientist and ally of Peter I, were transferred to the Nilova Hermitage.

You should go to monasteries with a pure heart and soul, and spend at least a day in each of these places.

Pose - majestic, intense, graceful, beautiful, picturesque, strange, relaxed, comfortable, uncomfortable...

We will borrow an example of a description of appearance from M.Yu. Lermontov (from the novel “Hero of Our Time”):

“He was of average height; his slender, slender figure and broad shoulders proved a strong build, capable of enduring all the difficulties of nomadic life and climate changes, not defeated either by the debauchery of metropolitan life or by spiritual storms; his dusty velvet frock coat, fastened only by the bottom two buttons, made it possible to see his dazzlingly clean linen, revealing the habits of a decent man; his stained gloves seemed deliberately tailored to his small aristocratic hand, and when he took off one glove, I was surprised at the thinness of his pale fingers. His gait was careless and lazy, but I noticed that he did not wave his arms - a sure sign of some secretiveness of character. However, these are my own comments, based on my own observations, and I do not at all want to force you to believe in them blindly.

When he sat down on the bench, his straight waist bent, as if he didn’t have a single bone in his back; the position of his whole body depicted some kind of nervous weakness: he sat as Balzac’s thirty-year-old coquette sits on her downy chairs after a tiring ball. At first glance at his face, I would not have given him more than twenty-three years, although after that I was ready to give him thirty. There was something childish in his smile. His skin had a certain feminine tenderness; his blond hair, naturally curly, so picturesquely outlined his pale, noble forehead, on which, only after long observation, one could notice traces of wrinkles that crossed one another and were probably visible much more clearly in moments of anger or mental anxiety. Despite the light color of his hair, his mustache and eyebrows were black - a sign of the breed in a person, just like the black mane and black tail of a white horse. To complete the portrait, I will say that he had a slightly upturned nose, teeth of dazzling whiteness and Brown eyes; I must say a few more words about the eyes.

First of all, they didn't laugh when he laughed! -Have you ever noticed such strangeness in some people?.. This is a sign of either an evil disposition or a deep constant sadness. Because of the half-lowered eyelashes, they shone with some kind of phosphorescent shine, so to speak. It was not a reflection of the heat of the soul or the playing imagination: it was a shine, like the shine of smooth steel, dazzling, but cold; his gaze, short, but penetrating and heavy, left an unpleasant impression of an immodest question and could have seemed impudent if he had not been so indifferently calm.”

We have prepared several tips and recommendations for you, following which you can easily increase your sales on any photo bank, including ours.

For a stock photographer, a successful shot is only half the battle. For a photograph to sell well on stocks, it must be described correctly. Otherwise, even the most successful photo will simply be lost in the database, and no one will ever see it.

It’s not difficult to describe stock photos; it’s much more difficult to find time for this tedious work. But as motivation, just think about how nice it will be to see your photos selling, which, if you do everything right, will not keep you waiting.

Put yourself in the buyer's shoes

The average potential client will not enter overly complex queries into the search bar like “mind-blowing model, 192 cm, 22 years old, standing all beautiful and posing.” He will ask at most about hair color, background and dress length. Be as specific as possible is your mantra from now on.

Try looking for something on the photo bank yourself. Imagine that you need a photo of nature for your desktop or a beautiful pattern to print on a T-shirt. Imagine the picture you want to find, formulate a query and look at the search results. When you find exactly the picture you imagined, look at its title - does it reflect the essence of the picture? Do this several times to better understand how customers think.

Name

Coming up with a name is the most creative part this monotonous task. The title of the image should reflect the idea you want to convey through your work. It's yours Subjective opinion. Think about the circumstances in which this or that picture can be used, and tell this to buyers. The optimal volume of a title is from three to seven words, not counting articles and prepositions. There is no need to indicate the street, much less the exact address of the shooting, but indicate a landmark if it is in the photo, or a city if it is recognizable. There is no need to write an essay in three sentences. Brevity is the soul of wit.

Successful examples: Grandiose plans // Pipe dreams of a bicycle // Girl on the edge of the world //

Attributes (keywords)

Your goal is to describe the image as specifically and truthfully as possible. The most effective number of keywords is from 10 to 35. Experience shows that correctly described images are more likely to find their buyer. Start with objects, list who or what is depicted, use nouns (synonyms), numerals and words describing quantity (group, crowd, class, team), names of professions or occupations, gender, age, social status, if appropriate. It wouldn’t hurt to add belonging to an ethnic group.

Don't describe parts of the whole. If the photograph shows a family with two children, then you should not list the father, mother, son and daughter. Don't write what is not in the picture. Don't write words that contradict each other.

You shouldn’t invent something that doesn’t exist: for example, a pen cannot be sad, smart or disappointed.

Let's move on to the circumstances: how objects are depicted. Describe the background, poses, color effects. Indicate whether the shot was taken indoors or on outdoors, morning, afternoon, evening, sunset, if appropriate, mention the time of year. If the photo was taken with interesting lighting or an unusual angle, write about it. Tell what's happening in the photo, don't avoid verbs. If there is a person present, then write whether he is standing, lying, running, looking, or crying, laughing, screaming. You can describe the direction of view - into the camera, up, down, to the side, etc. And also describe the size of the depicted object: in full height, waist-deep, head portrait, separate body part, whole, macro photography.

Let's evaluate, don't forget about adjectives. Try to use negative descriptions more often - 90% of stock photos express positive emotions, stand out!

Don't try too hard where it doesn't make sense. Remember that a pen is unlikely to be sad, adorable, smart, or disappointed. Also, it cannot be a ruler, a stapler, or all office supplies at once. Don't create a non-existent context for the clipart, but include the word "isolated." “Noise” in the search results only irritates buyers.

No tricks

Remember that by adding everything to your keywords, you are preventing the buyer from finding the image they are looking for. In addition, your images do not match the search query and, as a result, end up at the bottom of the search results. Less is better, but to the point.

Blurred background, girl on background, light background, straight hair, bright makeup, bright lips, plump lips, close-up, open look, makeup, hairstyle, styled hair, red hair.

Description of vector graphics

The favorite word of all authors is abstract. In second place is grunge. On the third - bokeh. What are the chances of a client finding your masterpiece (and we're sure you create masterpieces) among 300,000 abstract grunge backgrounds with bokeh elements? Agree, they are minimal.

Tips for describing vectors are similar to describing photographs, but there are some nuances. The title can be more specific if we're talking about about backgrounds, patterns, layouts. When a vector represents a plot drawing, a series of objects, a website layout, or something more or less specific, it is not difficult to describe it. But what if you drew a background, a pattern, or allowed your imagination to flow into a drawing in any form? Get to grips with the details. Indicate the style of the drawing, its type, everything that is depicted on it, the predominant color, the contrasting color, the presence of halftones, gradients, effects and possible areas of application.

Example of a correct description

Description: Pattern, seamless pattern, pattern, elegant, old fashioned, retro, retro style, vector, ornament, design, texture, flowers, colors, backdrop, element, pattern, repeat, wallpaper, paper, fabric, plants, victorian revival, floral, lilac, blue, yellow, large flowers.

Successful sales on photo banks depend not only on your unique style, quality of photographs and rich portfolio. Description of photos is an incredibly important part, neglecting which will lead to the fact that despite the quality, your works will not sell - they will simply get lost among millions of other images. Don't let your work go to waste, describe it correctly!

Acquaintance - important stage relationships between people. It is often said that already at the first meeting one can draw many conclusions about what a person is like. this person. In this article we will look at several options on how you can talk about yourself with humor.

Performance

Every normal acquaintance begins with an introduction. However, simply saying: “Hello, I’m Anya (Petya, Sasha)” is not particularly interesting or original. So, you can try more skillfully. The first option is a poetic form. Here you need to find a rhyme to own name and use it if you need to introduce yourself. As an option - Tanya the Jumper (if the person is Natasha - your joy (if the person radiates positivity) and so on. However, this phrase should be at least a little true. By the same principle, you can recommend yourself in prose, simply by adding something to your name - something characteristic that determines a person’s personality. This is if you need to tell a short story about yourself with humor. So, for example, you can tell about your profession: “Hello, I’m Sasha, I like to torture children” (if you are a teacher). It should be noted that even if Such an acquaintance will not end in friendship, it will definitely be remembered by the person forever.

A little bit about yourself

If the acquaintance is not limited to introducing people, but continues in a warm, friendly atmosphere, you can just as cheerfully talk about yourself. So, this does not always have to be true. Why not just try to make those around you laugh by getting a little creative? So, you can come up with a story about yourself that will be similar to the truth, and in this way amuse the company. However, it is original to tell the truth about yourself with humor. Interesting phrases that will help with this: “I was born secretly from my parents...”, “My childhood was just wonderful, who doesn’t like to twist the tails of cows?” etc. The main thing in this matter is to look at people’s reactions, because such an attitude towards the company may not always please everyone present. In a joking tone, you can simply say a couple of phrases or even make up a whole story and tell it to others.

Nuances

You can tell a lot about yourself with humor. So, for example, why not talk about your hobby? A very funny phrase: “My hobby is abnormal squint.” It seems that the person answered the question, but try to understand what he wanted to say. Using the same principle, you can answer: “I love music. Favorite singer - Lenin." And the people will laugh, and the new comrade will be remembered for a long time. It must be said that there can be a huge number of such little things. About favorite things - “I love playing strip snowballs”, oh life position- “I believe in all the colors of the rainbow,” etc.

Appearance

What else can you tell about yourself with humor? So, why not describe your appearance in a funny way? This is suitable if a person meets blindly: via the Internet or by phone. You can highlight your special features and present them in a fun way. For example, if you are too tall or short, promise the person to grow or shrink. In the event that someone has large ears, we can say that this is in order to better hear others (as in the fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood”), etc. It is important to just show your imagination and not be afraid to make a little joke on yourself.

Achievements

What else can a girl tell about herself with humor? For example, if she can drive a car, we can say that she can do it better than a monkey can handle a grenade (we are talking about a saying that everyone knows). Using the same principle, it’s easy to highlight your achievements. After all, such information is very important for some people, and few people want to immediately reveal all their cards at the first meeting. You can try to joke about this topic. For example, to say that life, like everyone else’s, is a striped zebra, there are both eases and difficulties. If we are talking about work or study, you can make up something (“I am the president of a large international bank” or “I am a secret security agent”) and present everything with a serious look.

Flaws

Telling a little about yourself with humor, why not dwell on your shortcomings? So, we can say that they are all already lined up for correction, but they won’t wait yet. At the same time, you need to smile meaningfully. This will be, as they say, “on topic.” When looking at something individually, why not note the most common characteristics? You can have fun talking about your laziness (especially if the person is a workaholic) or gluttony (this story will be especially fun coming from the lips of a lady weighing 50 kg).

Questionnaire

Very often today, if a person wants to register on a certain site, he must fill out a short questionnaire. In such a situation, you can also joke. A questionnaire can be a little fun or even funny. It’s easy to talk about yourself with humor here too. However, you must first think about whether the person will be understood correctly, because you can’t always joke. So, for example, if you register on a dating site, you only need to hint at what is inherent. After all, a completely humorous profile may be taken by potential gentlemen or brides simply as mockery, and real goal- finding your soul mate - alas, will not be achieved. However, a person who can laugh at himself or make others smile is always liked by people, because such people are often easy and simple to communicate with. Without restrictions, you can fill out small annotations about yourself with humor on various interest sites, where real information doesn't make a huge difference.

Basic Rules

Before you tell something about yourself with a bit of humor, you need to learn a few things: simple rules. The first of them: you can, and even need to, speak the truth, not always. In such a situation, lying is a nice thing. Why not, the main thing is that the interlocutor has fun. Next tip: you need to know where and with whom you can joke. Talk about yourself with humor during an interview for a serious position in big company- the height of frivolity. In addition, such a person will most likely be treated as a clown and tactfully asked to leave. You can joke at parties, with people in your circle and with friends. However, it should be remembered that uncomfortable situations happen here too. So, the following rule emerges from this: look at the reaction of the interlocutor. If a person decides to talk about himself in a cheerful tone, he needs to start with something light and simple. And look at the reaction of others. If the joke went well, you can continue in the same spirit. If not, then it’s better to leave this idea; the company, most likely, got caught more seriously than expected. What else do you need to remember? So, you should not openly ridicule your own or others' shortcomings. Few people like this, and it reveals a person who is not particularly confident in himself and is trying to hide behind such behavior. Humor should be light, but not mocking. And, probably, one of the main rules: speak in beautiful, clear speech, do not use or. Such behavior will give the person away. low level culture and general development, and few people will like this.

What to talk about and what to avoid?

It is also important to know what to talk about when you first meet, and what it is better to keep silent about and not joke about. So, you can tell everything about yourself and your life, even starting from childhood. Moreover, such stories will be really funny, because while a person is young at heart, a lot of interesting, unforgettable and simply funny events and situations happen to him. You can also tell a lot about your immediate environment. But what you shouldn’t talk about even in a joking tone is the secrets of loved ones. There is no need to stoop to the level of " yellow press" It is better to remain silent about this. This will most likely be interesting to those around you, but later it will leave an unpleasant “aftertaste” about the person. Women also have to hide something. You can tell a lot about yourself with humor, but at first, it’s best to keep silent about the intimate side of life. It is advisable not to admit this even as a joke. By the way, this also applies to men, because it is better if a person’s personal life remains private and does not become public knowledge.
