Medal "For Distinction in Military Service"- departmental medal of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, established by order of the Minister of Defense Russian Federation No. 123 of March 27, 1995 "On awards of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation".

The medal is awarded in a solemn ceremony by the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation or another official on his behalf. Together with the medal "For Distinction in Military Service" a certificate of the established form is awarded.

The medal is worn in accordance with the Rules for wearing military uniforms and insignia of military personnel of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, departmental insignia and other heraldic signs.

The medal "For Distinction in Military Service" I degree is made of silver-colored metal and has the shape of a circle with a diameter of 32 mm with a convex rim on both sides.

On the front side of the medal: in the center - a relief image of a shield with a Roman numeral I in the center, indicating the degree of the medal, on two diagonally crossed swords, wings and an anchor entwined with a rope; below them in a circle is a relief inscription: "FOR DIFFERENCE IN MILITARY SERVICE".

On the reverse side of the medal: in the center - a relief image of the emblem of the Armed Forces ( double-headed eagle with outstretched wings, holding right paw sword, and in the left - a laurel wreath. On the chest of the eagle is a shield crowned with a crown. On a shield on a red field - a horseman slaying a dragon with a spear); in a circle - a relief inscription: in the upper part - "MINISTRY OF DEFENSE", in the lower part - "RUSSIAN FEDERATION".

The medal of the 1st degree is connected with a pentagonal block, covered with a silk moiré ribbon 24 mm wide, with the help of an eyelet and a ring. On the right edge of the tape, an orange strip 10 mm wide is bordered black stripe 2 mm wide, on the left - a red stripe 12 mm wide, divided in the middle by a green stripe 2 mm wide.

The medal "For Distinction in Military Service" is worn on right side chest below orders of the USSR. The ribbon for the medal on the general bar is placed after the ribbon for the medal "For Distinction in Security state border THE USSR".

Description of the medal

The medal "For Distinction in Military Service" I degree is made of brass and has the shape of a convex five pointed star, between the ends of which there are five shields with the emblems of the main branches of the armed forces. In the center of the medal is a profile image of a soldier, sailor and pilot, framed by a ring with the inscription "For Distinction in Military Service" and two laurel branches at the bottom. All images on the medal are convex. The reverse side of the medal has no images, only in the lower part of the reverse (at 6 o'clock on the dial) there is a small embossed hallmark of Moscow mint in the form of three stylized letters "MMD".

The size of the medal between opposite ends of the star is 38 mm.

The medal is connected by means of an eye and a ring to a brass block 29.5 mm wide and 27.5 mm high. The shoe is covered with a red silk moire ribbon with two longitudinal green stripes along the edges. The width of the tape is 24 mm, the strips are 3 mm, the distance of the strip from the edge is 3 mm. A brass five-pointed star is placed on the tape in the center of the block. The box has a threaded pin with a nut on the reverse side for attaching the medal to clothing. The clamping nut with a diameter of 19 mm has the stamp "MOSKOVSKIY MINT" in raised letters.

The medal "For Distinction in Military Service" II degree, its block and star on the ribbon are made of cupronickel.

History of the medal


First awarded with a medal"For Distinction in Military Service" of the 1st degree became Private Anatoly Vasilyevich Spirin. By order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR dated March 24, 1975, he was awarded this award for courage and bravery shown during the arrest of armed criminals. By order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR dated March 3, 1976, the medal "For Distinction in Military Service", I degree, was awarded to Private Petr Savelyevich Aiglov for courage and dedication shown in saving state material assets from the fire.

The first mass awards of the medal "For Distinction in Military Service" II degree were made on the eve of the celebration of the Day of the Soviet Army in 1975. The medal "For Distinction in Military Service" quickly became an award for ensigns and midshipmen. Cases of awarding this medal to officers, and even more so to privates and non-commissioned officers, occurred less frequently.

By the beginning of 1981, more than 3,000 servicemen were awarded the medal "For Distinction in Military Service" of the 1st degree, and about 25,000 servicemen were awarded the medal of the 2nd degree. In 1985, about 5 thousand and about 40 thousand military personnel, respectively, were awarded medals of I and II degrees.

There are cases of repeated awarding with a medal. So, for example, senior warrant officer Skrementov Valery Afanasyevich, who served in the railway troops, was awarded this medal three times. His first award was a medal of the second degree in accordance with the order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR No. 287 of December 23, 1982. In 1990, by order of the Minister of Defense of the USSR No. 9 of February 9, Skrementov was awarded the first degree of the medal. The last, third awarding took place with another first degree of the medal, but after the collapse Soviet Union- Order of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation No. 11 dated January 17, 1995.

One of the last awards of this medal in the history of the USSR took place in accordance with the order of the Minister of Internal Affairs of the USSR No. 687ls of December 18, 1991. The front part of the award, 2009, as well as 1995, is the same, that is, a relief shield is located in the center, and behind are two diagonally crossed arms, wings, and an anchor around which a cable is wrapped. In the center of the shield is a number that indicates the degree of the award. Below is a pro-relief engraving "For Distinction in Military Service". At the back of the award, according to the regulations of 2009, in the center there is a pro-relief image of the coat of arms of the Armed Forces of Russia, along the edges there is a convex engraving. In the upper part - "Ministry of Defense", in the lower part - "Russian Federation". According to the rules of the 1995 regulation, there was an engraving in the center that fit on 3 lines: "Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation." Medal "For Combat Distinction"

This type of medal was adopted in 2003. Five years later, in 2008, additions and changes were made to the order of its awarding and wearing rules. Such a medal is awarded to military personnel who, at the risk of own life, carried out the combat missions assigned to them and at the same time showed a certain heroism and courage. The medal "For Combat Distinction" is entitled to receive both soldiers and command personnel who made decisions that led to the excellent performance of a specific combat mission.

This medal is awarded only once. The medal is worn in accordance with the statutory rules, on uniform, available to the soldier, on the left side of the uniform or tunic. It should be located after the existing state awards and behind two insignia of lesser dignity. It is attached with a pin.

The medal is a circle, made of metal white color. On its front side there is an inscription "For military distinctions", above the inscription there are silhouettes of a flying helicopter and an airplane, and under the inscription, the silhouette of a tank.

Military personnel who receive this award receive a remuneration in the amount of 75% of the salary for their position. Not only military personnel serving under the contract, but also civilian employees of the Armed Forces are entitled to receive this payment.

Medal "For military valor"

The award was introduced in 1999. The medal "For Military Valor" is given to those who have shown considerable courage and bravery in the performance of their combat missions. The award has only two degrees. First of all, an award of lesser denomination is issued, and only then the first degree. But citizens who already have state awards issued earlier can immediately be awarded the first degree award.

This medal is supposed to be worn on the uniform on the left side, after the existing state awards.

An award medal of the first degree of a higher denomination is usually issued from the tompak material, which has the color of gold. The second degree award is made in silver color.

On the front side of such a medal, you can see the image of the Russian Standard of the Ministry of Defense, surrounded by a wreath of oak branches. In the manufacture of a color image, enamel paint is used.

Medal "For demining"

This medal was issued only in 2002. It is awarded to certain categories of military personnel who have shown high professionalism in the following cases:

  • in the implementation of the demining manual;
  • when taking part in work international groups for demining facilities;
  • when working on the destruction of explosive objects.

This medal is worn on the uniform, exclusively on the left side and should be located only after the medal "For Military Valor". Made from gold-tone metal.

On the front of the medal there is a silhouette of a man in military uniform holding a mine detector. An armored car is located in the background of the central part. At the bottom of the insignia is a wreath of laurel. On the reverse side of this insignia in the center is the inscription "For demining". Around the circle is the inscription Ministry of Defense.

Medal "For Strengthening the Combat Commonwealth"

This medal was adopted back in 2005, but in 2009 it was re-adopted with amendments to the law. This medal was awarded to a rather limited circle of people, it was awarded to citizens who took part in exercises between the countries of the Warsaw Pact. Over the entire period of awarding this medal, only 20,000 people became its owners.

Now this award is given to military personnel and civilians who contributed to the strengthening of relations between countries that cooperated with the Russian Federation. This award is given only once. Re-delivery is not provided.

The medal is made in the form of a standard golden circle measuring 32 millimeters. On the front side of this medal you can see a shield with the image of two swords. In the event of the death of the owner of the awards, all of them are transferred to his heirs. In the absence of heirs from the recipient of the award, they return to the Presidential Administration.

If incorrect and unreliable information was entered in the documents that are required to issue an award in relation to a person applying for it, then the issued award is returned to the Presidential Administration.

The sale and illegal storage of awards entails liability stipulated under the law of the Russian Federation. It is also not allowed to manufacture awards having resemblance with the state. Withdrawn awards are returned to the Presidential Administration.

Citizens of the Russian Federation are not entitled to accept awards from other states without the permission of the President of the Russian Federation. On behalf of the President of the Russian Federation, awards may be presented by his substitute officials, or by the heads of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, as well as by the commanders of military units and formations. Medals and insignia of the Russian Federation are awarded no later than 3 months from the entry into force of the order on awarding a serviceman. If the recipient cannot receive the award himself for good reasons, other persons can do it for him, on his behalf.
