How to draw a caricature step by step with a pencil from a photo. Cartoon step by step drawing

Not all art was created to be admired and painted with boiling water, and then bought for millions of American rubles. There are also drawing styles that are made for laughter, for positive consideration, and without too much philosophy. One of these styles in drawing is considered to be caricature, and today I will show you an example of one. Find out how to draw a caricature Will Smith. Directly connected with this genre are such types of art as caricature, popular print, grotesque. The basis of satire and humor is created here by increasing or decreasing facial features, imbalance of the body and face. Mostly portraits of people are taken for caricatures. I remember that at one festival they made me a free caricature, however, I could not take it home, these were the conditions for free drawing. But I laughed heartily. The neck was thin as a match, one eye protruding, the other seemed to be pressed inward. The shape of the head resembled a pear from the times of Chernobyl. Until recently, caricatures served more than amusement purposes. We can assume that these were the first political demotivators. The most famous cartoon you may even know is a poster on which a man obscenely pokes his finger at you and asks: Have you volunteered? But the Soviet authorities had a very subtle sense of humor, and did not like this type of antics. Therefore, the cartoons were always based on a fictional official or structure. So to speak, the authorities have nothing to do with it, and the author has not been repressed.

  • Strange things are happening in the world. I have already said that sometimes a work of art is not even worth a ruble, but they buy it for thousands. So the most expensive caricature sold cost 2000 dollars, it was a portrait of Michael Jackson, painted by an unknown person.
  • The famous writing supplies company Caran d'Ache takes its name from the cartoonist Emmanuel Poiret. I know you didn't even read the title the first time around, so read it and notice that Pencil writes there. Emmanuel studied in Moscow, and it was then that he invented such a pseudonym for himself, using an ordinary pencil.
  • We are surrounded by cartoons all the time. All trolling pictures, faces and comics are caricatures. It can be freely considered that this is the most widespread style on the World Wide Web.

Today we will try to draw our own cartoon, and I chose the actor Will Smith as the victim. It will be fun.

How to draw a cartoon with a pencil step by step

Step one. Remember, a caricature is not a portrait; if you draw it almost exactly, it will only be funnier. First, draw two squares and connect them with a line. Step two. Like any face, the caricature should also be symmetrical. We carefully draw big ears, huge, I would say. The head will be shaped like a pinned-down rugby ball, and the nose and lips will not lag behind the ears. Step three. Let's draw the eyes of the usual size so that it doesn't turn out too scary. Some hair is also needed, and also, we need a long and thin neck, which is attached to the body, which is smaller than the head. This is what a caricature looks like - completely disproportionate. Step four. We draw poor Smith at least some pretentious beard, otherwise he does not look too serious. Smoothly apply shadows and shading to the right places. Step five. Practice and over time you will draw caricatures of your friends. Believe me, you will have fun like that. And if you have interesting ideas to write new lessons, write to me HERE, and you will definitely see the lesson you are interested in soon. Want to learn to draw better human face or cartoons? SKETCHES

Before I start drawing, I do a little research on the topic that I am going to convey in my drawing. I started drawing this cartoon right from the mirror. Keeping an eye on different poses and facial expressions, and tried to apply different styles drawing - from cartoon to more realistic.

The main thing here is not to complicate anything, but to concentrate all your attention only on the figures of the drawing, its rhythm and composition. With this approach, you don't have to be afraid to get lost in a lot of details.

PHOTO REFERENCES

Since this is an auto-caricature, I could take a picture of myself and just redraw it on paper, but I rarely do it. When, for example, I need to draw a portrait or caricature on famous person, you have to use photos taken from the Internet, and each of them has a different lighting, pose and perspective. To avoid this problem, I photograph myself. And this photo will serve as a model for me to build the body and face of the person I will draw. In the next paragraph, I'll go into more detail on how I create photo references.

Before preparing for a photo set, I must prepare an illustration of my idea on paper. The drawing does not have to be elaborate, although important elements of the composition must be noted so that we know what will then need to be photographed, for example, clothes, objects, lighting ...

When the sketch is ready, it's time for a photo shoot. First of all, you need to consider the perspective. I took a couple of pictures and compared them with the picture to check the height, ratio, angle and types of lenses.

For this cartoon, I positioned the camera one meter away from me, at about the level of my nose. The head and body are slightly rotated three quarters so that we have an angular perspective, so we need to pay more attention to the corners of the mouth and the position of the eyes.

For lighting, I only used diffused light. The brightest light source, to the right of the head, is relatively close and has a yellowish tint, almost white. Secondary light is ambient light reflected from a yellow background, roof, walls, and floor. The color of this light is much brighter, but the transparency is also quite high.

INSTRUMENTS

Photoshop CS6

Bamboo Wacom Pen Tablet

G13 Logitech Console

Note: Place only the most frequently used tools and keyboard shortcuts on your console, as well as time-saving preference keys shortened to two or three keys, such as Ctrl + Alt + Z.

REFINING THE SKETCH

When I am happy with the resulting reference photo, I create the final outline drawing, which will further serve as a basis for me. I try to convey the perspective, foreshortening, overlapping shapes, anatomy as accurately as possible, and I also keep looking for the most appropriate position on the paper. I try not to paint in the center, because the center of the canvas is a very strong zone, which tends to make the objects located there very rigid, still. I'd rather push back main object to the side and maybe just above or below the center to create a more interesting composition.

Note: Rotating the canvas horizontally or vertically refreshes the eye very well and helps to notice mistakes that were not seen in another position.

LIGHT AND COLOR

Before creating a color picker, I analyze the relationship between light and dark colors, and divide them into two groups: bright side and the dark side.

The bright side is the one with the brightest light. There are shine, and lighter, less saturated colors(but there are exceptions) and semitones.

On dark side all projected and shaping shadows, dark and saturated tones (again, there are exceptions), as well as reflected light are located. Correctly defining these two groups is the key to giving volume to any shape.

I usually use 3 to 6 colors for each element in the drawing - hair, skin, eyes, mouth, T-shirt, etc. These colors are divided into the two groups that I talked about earlier. As I paint, I can add and change colors according to the new results and mixes I get, but I always try to stick to the original colors.

Note: I create the palette on a separate layer and protect it with a lock, so as not to accidentally start painting over it.

OVERLAY FIRST COLORS

I think this is the most important stage because if it is done well, further coloring will be much easier. At this point, I don't zoom in on the image or care about the cleanliness of the brush strokes. The main thing here is to overlay the correct color in the right place and, if necessary, correct the palette.

I create a layer below the sketch and paint over each element of the picture with the appropriate semitone. Next, I gradually add highlights and shadows. It is very important not to rush anywhere, because here you can easily go to extremes, i.e. make the drawing too light or too dark.

Note: from time to time I look closely at the drawing, squinting my eyes to identify areas that need correction. Squinting only helps me see large shapes and ignore details.

EDGE PROCESSING

When i'm happy primary colors, I decrease the Opacity of the outline layer and create a new layer on top of it. I paint over all the areas where the contour lines were visible and blend the brush strokes.

Note: I always try to change the edges of the shapes - sometimes I draw them, sometimes I hide them. This technique adds to the drawing of life.

ORGANIZED WORK

As I work, I try to organize my layers into a simple and convenient system. I created almost half of the painting on two or three layers: one for the background, one for the character, and one temporary layer. This layer is for "safety" - when I paint something on it, I don't have to worry that the bottom layer will deteriorate, and when the result suits me, I merge the layers, create another temporary layer and work on.

The number of layers only increases towards the end of the drawing. At this point, I am just finishing painting the eyes, teeth, hair, textures, shine and dark effects. For each item, I create a group of layers. Groups are very helpful in organizing and visualizing what you are working on.

I also try not to work long time in one area. I try to move around the drawing and work over the entire surface. This makes it possible to review the image as a whole, and subsequently it helps to detect areas that need improvement.

Note: in Photoshop CS6, you can add color to layers and groups directly from the layers menu. You just need to right-click on the layer and select the desired color from the list.

FINAL STROKES

Before adding the final touches, I translate the drawing "full screen" and move two meters away from the monitor to take a closer look at where and what needs to be corrected. At the focal point, I place the most important details and the highest contrast between colors, in this case, these are the eyes.

Click on the picture to see the image in full size and 100% quality.

I add more shine / glow, paint eyelashes, small hairs here and there, highlight some of the dark areas of the shadows, wrinkles and finally texture the skin. To add texture, I take photographs of the skin high resolution, remove the saturation, adjust the blending mode and apply this layer where necessary. Decrease Opacity, erase clear boundaries, adjust the layer using Levels (Levels) to adjust its lightness to the picture itself, so that the texture does not look like a detached mask.

Finally, I play around with the background and contrast of the image, and once again look closely at the drawing so as not to miss areas that still need work.

Click on the picture to see the image in full size and 100% quality.

Note: A well-photographed texture should have a balanced brightness / lightness, without excess shine or deep shadows. Use reflectors when photographing, or shoot in cloudy weather.

I have long wanted to draw a cartoon. It's a little lighter than a real portrait, but it also takes a lot of knowledge and effort. For such a task, of course, you must choose famous person... The choice fell on this comrade: It seems that everyone is already familiar with this comrade in a white coat. Or imagine all the same? Dr. House is the result of David Shore's creative endeavors, brought to life by Hugh Laurie. The development of a detective line within the sterile walls of the hospital attracted a lot of sick and healthy people to the zombie box. Before how to learn to draw caricatures, I'll tell you a little about Hugh Laurie:

  • Hugh Laurie not only plays a narcissistic doctor, but also acts as the producer of the series.
  • He himself does not watch the series. Marvelous. Maybe there’s just no time.
  • When our favorite was still filling the ranks of the shkolota, he did not waste his time in vain: he was engaged in rowing. By the way, his dad even at one time received gold for Olympic Games in London for this sport. So there was someone to take an example from.
  • The series is American. Hugh, on the other hand, is English. As a result, in each episode he has to not only portray a lame man, but also fake an American accent.
  • This doctor is the highest paid doctor. Only now his qualifications are not a physician, but an actor.
  • Laurie is a blues lover. And in our native capital, he visited with concerts.
  • And one more thing: "Everybody lies."

Enough chatter, let's pick up a pencil.

How to draw a cartoon with a pencil step by step

Step one In the very center of the sheet, draw a large, elongated egg. It is not an oval, because the figure is more pointed at the bottom. From her down - the lines of the neck. The shoulders are very sloping and not wide. Step two On the face, sketch out the main auxiliary lines. We are already familiar with them, as the face has been drawn more than once. These are the vertical line of the nose, the line of the eyes and the line of the mouth. Draw a small line between the lines of the eyes and mouth - the nose. Let's draw the ears and hair. Now - the collar of the shirt. Step Three We continue to work on our cartoon. Add short lines to the hair. Let's show the main lines of a long, elongated nose. Wide mouth. Slightly lower is an arc bend. Remaining - eyes and eyebrows. Be careful, the eyes say a lot about the person. Step Four Shade the hair in places. Draw the nose, mouth, folds on the forehead, facial hair. Now let's move on to the details of the clothes. Step Five It remains to perform shading to give liveliness to the drawing. Imagine that the light falls from the front, which means we darken the side parts. Blend the lines a little. We take a piece of paper and rub it in the right places where a shadow is needed. Well, that's it. I would like to believe that this lesson will be useful for you and teach how to draw cartoons with a pencil... And I advise you to try again to draw.

It has long been known that best gift Is a hand-made thing. She not only keeps warmth donor, but still perfectly conveys his true attitude to the hero of the occasion. An excellent option there will be a caricature made by himself - a funny cartoon, in which the recipient will be depicted through the prism of good humor. And do not be afraid that to create such a picture you need to be a professional in your field. No, everything is simpler here, you don't need to have the talent of Van Gogh or Shishkin at all. It is enough just to have on your computer the Photoshop program and a snapshot of the object to which you decided to present such an unusual surprise.

Cartoon theory

But before getting down to business, you should get acquainted with some of the principles and theoretical rules for creating cartoons. The main thing is how the cartoon differs from regular pattern or photographs are the proportions of the face. They must be different from the natural ones in order to end up with a comic image.

Often, professional artists working in this genre, change the distance between the nose, eyes, mouth. Less commonly, they affect the space between the eyebrows and hairline, as well as the lower lip and chin. There are no clear rules, mandatory standards that must be observed in this case. Each time, the magnitude of the change will vary depending on the subject's face type and other conditions.

One of the most difficult tasks for the caricaturist, it means that when the proportions of the face change, it does not lose its resemblance to the original. For this, professionals recommend dividing the face using proportion lines before starting work.

Vertical lines are drawn along the pupils as well as both corners of the eyes. Horizontal - along the hairline, eyebrows, tip of the nose and chin. Now that, with the help of this simple technique, the relationship between the main elements of the face becomes known, it will be much easier to modify them. At the same time, the risk that the cartoon hero does not recognize himself is kept to a minimum.

Unity of proportions

Another important principle of caricature requires its creator to work in a complex manner. This means that changes should affect all elements, not just one. Otherwise, the loss of proportions will lead to the fact that the image ceases to resemble the original. Therefore, professional cartoonists have a ready-made, long-established set of relationships between the main elements of the face.

For example, if the nose decreases, then it is necessary to increase the distance between the eyes, widen the face and "squeeze" the head along its length.

Beginner creators of caricatures will be helped by the rule of the letter "T", to the shape of which the face being processed is reduced. The vertical line should line up with the nose and the horizontal bar of the letter should line up with the eyes. No matter how the distance between these points changes in the future, the letter "T" should be transformed, but not disintegrated into separate parts. In the future, when the caricatured nose and eyes take their intended places, it will be easy to adjust the rest of the proportions.

Reverse deformation rule

Its meaning lies in the fact that when one part of the face is deformed, the fragments adjacent to it change in the opposite direction. For example, when you move your mouth up to the nose, with which it will almost merge, you need to remove the chin. And if it is conceived to reduce the nose and draw it to the eyes, then the lower jaw and mouth should be proportionally enlarged.

Well, before moving on to practice, we will voice the most important rule - exercise as much as possible, not paying attention to the first failures. Then, over time, you will come to understand the principle of drawing cartoons and you will be able to create masterpieces on the machine, without even thinking.

Working with Photoshop

So, having opened the selected photo, you need to go to the filters menu (Filter) and select the "Liquify" section there. As a result, a new window will open, to the right of which the filter toolbar will be located. On it, you should select a tool called the Bloat Tool and set the necessary settings for it:

* brush size - 90-100;

* Brush Rate - 80.

The resulting brush should be carefully applied to each eye, trying to enlarge them to the same size. Then, using the same tool, you need to process the nose and lips, observing the proportions in relation to the eyes.

If the facial features need to be reduced, then the procedure will be the same, only for this on the filter panel you need to select the compression tool called the "Pucker Tool".

Now let's move on to making changes to the top and bottom of the head. To enlarge the chin by pulling it down, you need a tool called the Forward Warp Tool.

With its help, you can stretch the lower part of the face to the sides. The forehead and hair should be reduced. With the help of the same Forward Warp Tool, you can give the model a smile by raising the corners of the mouth, or enlarge the ears, if the hairstyle allows it.

Filippo Baldinucci is one of the most significant art critics 17th century, defines the creation of caricatures and cartoons in its "Dictionary artistic concepts", Which appeared in 1681, as follows:" The method of creating a portrait, in which various achievements of the highest similarity with the image are possible, can be achieved using various methods of identifying any features that will make you laugh, and in order to laugh, you need to make some changes, emphasize certain defects and components exaggeratedly and intensely, but in such a way that the portrait as a whole does not lose its resemblance. " The Italian critic wanted to say by this that a caricature is created by reducing or exaggerating certain parts of the face, body, any contrasts in order to give the image a satirical character. It arises between reality and improbability, similarity and equivalent.
Another put it this way: "Traits allow you to be carried away automatically and intuitively." While another artistic genius, Pablo Picasso, explained: "I do not seek, I find." He invited, for example, the person sitting opposite him to trust him precisely in the work, since at the beginning of each artist's creation there are exploration and analysis, a little inspiration and chance. Therefore, we invite you to draw without any red tape until you find your own style in the art of caricatures and caricatures.
To make it easier to achieve your goal, we will combine in this topic various drawings, performed by renowned professional caricatures and cartoonists. Our goal is to show you the steps you need to take to understand the basics of distortion that make up caricatures. Since they are based not only on "formulas", but also on different styles, we will give you some correct general norms that will be useful, and we will try to dwell on own sight each of the cartoonists featured (leading you to an interesting variety of distortion). We also send you to an exciting world white sheet paper and pencil.

Let's find out how to draw a cartoon correctly. To do this, we will study the advice of outstanding caricatures and caricature masters.

Get used to working with at least three photographs of the model (front, profile and full-face) if possible. This will help you to identify the volumetric features of the image. In addition, facial features can be understood more clearly in this way.

In this article, we learn to draw cartoons in stages. In this lesson, Anthony Garner caricatures the popular French general Charles de Gaulle, a political leader who has a rather solemn appearance and a large nose. Incidentally, you find two photographs that testify exactly to the above. The artist performs initially one complete, absolutely line drawing and covers it first with numerous azure. Transparent watercolor paints are best suited for this work: with the help of them, there is an approximation with a realistic drawing.

Let's consider how to draw a friendly cartoon in stages. Here we have an example in which the artist shows how to draw all the shapes and details that belong to the worked out humorous performance... There is necessary condition that the tonal variations of the flesh, as well as the structure of clothing and the skin are given great attention and it is necessary to generously take care of each color variety, which will be marked with a characteristic ready-made friendly caricature.

Let's consider how to draw a caricature from a photograph. Experiments will be carried out on the image of the American film director, actor and screenwriter Orson Wells. Cartoonist Alfonso Lopez shows us some photographs of Orson Welles, from which he develops a caricature with a subtle psychological outlook, as it fits strong personality models. Our first step is to define characteristic features image.

Consider how to draw Merlin Monroe in stages. Let's take a hilarious cartoon portrait of Merlin Monroe, the sex symbol of the screen. In order not to reinvent the wheel, let's study, as the famous cartoonist Anthony Garner did.

Consider how to learn how to draw a cartoon step by step with a pencil. In this lesson, we will make a caricature of the famous film producer Woody Allen in a generalized psychological style. The psychological caricature requires further elimination from the realistic canons. and the details lose all meaning due to the great abstraction and certain influences of an intellectual nature on the observer. For this lesson, credit was given to cartoonist Alfonso Lopez, who works in a completely different style.
