Septic Flesh is a musical group from the city of Athens. In their sound, they mix death metal, dark metal, symphonic metal, industrial metal and dark ambient, using a mystical, mythological, horror and even opera and theater atmosphere, as well as various types of vocals.

They existed from 1990 to 2003, after the reunion in 2007 they changed their name to Septicflesh.

In early 1991, the band recorded the Forgotten Path demo. The film sold well (about 800 copies were sold), and the team decided to release a mini-album. Temple of the Lost Race contained the band's classic track, and it was thanks to this track that Septic Flesh received a contract from Holy Records.

The first full-length was recorded with Magus Vampire Daolot as a producer. Mystic Places of Dawn, based on ancient Greek myths, was a combination of speed, brutality, melody and atmosphere, which the musicians themselves called “dreamy death metal”.

The next album, created under the same conditions as its predecessor, noted the slowing down of the tempo and the introduction of doom elements into the music. At the same time, the influence of the culture of the ancient Hellenes was clearly felt on Esoptron. The third work, Septic Flesh, surpassed all expectations and significantly raised the group's popularity.

This time the sessions were held under the supervision of Lambros Sphiris. Also, the vocalist Natalie Rasoulis was introduced, and the guitarist Chris Antoniu used neoclassical elements in music (after all, it was not for nothing that he studied at the English University of Music). As for the texts, they formed the concept of the invention of a secret engine that changes reality. The following year, the team decided to delight the fans with rarities and recorded the album A Fallen Temple, based on the reworking of Temple of the Lost Race. From the new material, only five compositions got to the disc, two of which (Marble Smiling Face and The Eldest Cosmonaut) soon became very popular. In support of the album, Septic Flesh undertook a global European tour "Temple of Humiliations", on which they performed as headliners with the support of Misanthrope and Natron. The team came to their next studio work without Natalie Rasoulis and drummer Kostas (Akis Kapranos took the place on drums).

The album Revolution DNA was recorded in Sweden with producer Fredrik Nordstrom. As a result, listeners received a new metal album in the spirit of dark new age, and the songs on it became more theatrical and soulful. After the release of the album, Chris Antoniu organized the side-project Chaostar, to which he attracted his colleagues from Septic Flesh, including Natalie Rasoulis. - You just went on your first solo tour. What do you like to ride more: with a group or alone?

Second. I'm more comfortable performing alone. I do not wait until the joint verses are over, but I immediately throw my own. The rhythm does not go astray, because when we played together or with the whole gang, each had its own pressure and a different concert tempo. I like to fuck wildly, some people like to walk on stage. Or vice versa, I'm tired, and someone fucks. And these contrasts did not allow me to correctly calculate the energy.

- I heard that with “Sunset” you skated the tour on the old “fret”.

- Yes, that was our second round. We gave a bunch of concerts to one organizer, we had to travel through the cities from Ulyanovsk to the south in a minivan. And the day we arrived in Ulyanovsk, that minivan broke down. And for the money that we had for the transfer, we could only take off the Lada Largus. I, Lizer, Hussein, Courier, a driver with an organizer, and a couple more people got into it. There were 7-8 of us in total, so many of us should fit into it.

- Is it more interesting or difficult?

- I got sick in Saratov, rode with a temperature of 38. I drank antibiotics, drank, gave concerts - and then died in a car. Difficult, inconvenient. It is more convenient to travel by plane when you have 2-3 concerts on weekends, and not all cities in a row.

- I saw the scene at your concert in Minsk with Lizer: my daughter came to the concert with her mother, who was concentrating on filming the entire performance on the phone. What other unusual things have you encountered?

- I think this is normal. I am very grateful to the parents who let their children to our concerts. Because one way or another, this generation is history. It is useless to block music. And it's cool when families listen to us. I often come across reviews: “We listened to your album with my mother, I liked it very much”.

- How do your parents react to creativity?

- They react very well. I have never had any inhibitions. Not in school or college. At home, everyone was always supported. I started making music in 2009, I assembled the first studio in my grandmother's closet, the whole area was recording there. There was only Adobe Audition, which the dudes threw me on a flash drive.

Now I am learning about new Pharaoh videos or Kizaru's sayings from my father. Arsen (Lizer - approx. The Flow) was shocked when we arrived at the first concert in Ekb, and his father said: "Something Kizaru says a lot there."

- You take them to your performances in Yekaterinburg, right?

- I had three concerts in Yekaterinburg, for each I brought my parents. Everyone comes up to my dad to take pictures, take autographs. He drives there very confident.

- How did you become a participant in “Sunset”? You are from Yekaterinburg, and “Sunset” began as a Moscow association.

- I had a song with i61, I also helped shoot the Krestall Courier video with Boulevard Depo, somehow I was in the culture, there was some kind of street credibility. And then Arsen Lizer writes to me. He had a picture on his avatar wearing a Dopeclvb hoodie. Such a typical hype mod. And he says: "Bro, I have my debut release of 'Frozen', would you like to fly in?" I was in favor, but I was finishing my release and did not have time.

And after that he offered to fly into their gang, I wanted to try myself as a beatmaker. Well, we agreed that they would add me to the conference, let's see how it goes. We quickly got along with everyone.

- Was it difficult to join the party?

- On the contrary, simple. When we had Krestall Gang, we were together in the studio all the time, it was a live movement. Me, Kidd, Aqualiquid, Courier, UFO, Junk. And someone was always dissatisfied with something. Vk you might think to digest everything. And there were always conflicts alive, so there was no single brainstorming session. In Sunset, we joined forces and screwed up.

I noticed how the guys began to grow. They began to have subscribers, at that time there were 6-7 thousand. I had about the same numbers, why not unite? To release an album from yourself and from them will be a profit. Plus, “Sunset” then supported the public “Elite”, made memes and so on, because Hussein was friends with them. Thought why not? “It sounds like joining Sunset was more of a strategic step for you.

- Initially, I just decided to believe in them. Drop your street credit and give it a try.

At that time, I aimed to work with YungRussia. I spoke on Skype with Visnu to work on the video. I thought that the prospect goes to them. And I just entered the "Sunset". And as I understood, YungRussia treated them negatively. You know how everyone is reacting to the Kuznetsk Squad now.

And I decided to give up on everything that had been worked out with YungRussia, and believed in “Sunset”. I thought that my experience can give some kind of impetus and we ourselves can make the phenomenon. We started to deal with “High Technologies”. We acted as an opening act for Courier with this track, then shot a video. We immediately knew that he would shoot, and then everything went by itself.

- Why did “Sunset” fall apart?

- When Arsen and I communicate live, all the intersection points converge. When he gives interviews, I feel that his statements are going the other way.

As I saw the collapse of “Zakat” I: only Arsen and I did something. At the same time, all the beatmakers wanted money: “Well, you’re on tour, and I’m sitting in Tyumen, maybe you can tell us?” And we rode the "fret" then, the money was clearly less than they thought. Everyone asked for reposts, to drop unique content, but at the same time they could not throw off the normal multitrack of beats. The disagreements began with the beatmakers. It was a hobby for everyone, but for Arsen and me it was work.

And we began to notice that the audience stretches here and there. In one city, 70% of people came to Arsen, in another - to me. And so everywhere. This is bad. It turned out that attention would be pulled from one to the other. “Now we will release the Lizer album, then Flesh” - and I want to drop it today. The public turned out to be non-rubber, the two of us felt cramped.

- What kind of relationship are you in now?

- Neutral, we don't communicate much. I don’t fully understand what he is doing, but I’m okay. Everyone builds a career the way they want.

- “Sunset”, Krestall Gang, Dopeclvb, the same YungRussia - why all young associations sooner or later disperse?

It was just that in 2013-2014 it was much more convenient to move with a gang. There was no money, no streaming services, and even more concerts. Basta and Kasta went on tours normally. And there was no competition in the industry. If I started now, then in a week I could gain some kind of audience. Now everything depends on the person.

And then it was like this: one knows how to mix, another writes beats, the third shoots videos, the fourth negotiates performances. It was fun and cool to move together. And in 2018 you can be alone and everywhere at once. In solo you are more interesting to others than in a gang. It's much easier now.

- Are you sorry that “Sunset” is over or, on the contrary, you got everything from it?

“Sunset touring was fun, there were a lot of epic stories. One is bored, it's a routine. You just do gig after gig. I no longer have the excitement to hang out with some chick after a concert, swell or drink syrup with dudes. I give a concert - I drink a glass of beer - I go to bed. And with the dudes there was rock and roll. I am now 23, they are 19. Then we were a couple of years younger, Thrill Pill was generally 15. And with them I felt very young.

But the best thing that happened to my career was getting out of Sunset. Both financially and creatively.

- You said about epic stories. Remember one.

- We drove from Rostov to Krasnodar, there was a trunk in the bag. And in the organizer's backpack - I have no idea why - there was a huge phallus. It seems like they gave him as a joke for his birthday, so that he beat them all "like in GTA". And then the cops stopped us, began to shake things out. It's good that they didn't find the trunk: they would drag us, there is a permit, there is no permit, and so on. It was epic when we were already on the street, the cop climbs into the trunk, takes a huge cock out of his backpack and does not understand what he has in his hands. His colleague began to lose heart, so did we. After that we were released.

- You filmed the video for “False Mirror” in Paris together. How did it happen?

- Our operator, Lesha Gwai, was supposed to fly with us, but they did not have time to get him a visa. He ended up just giving us his equipment. And we filmed each other. I had a vision in my head of how to make candy out of shit. What is the pace, what frames, what transitions - and so on.

We didn't want to shoot a video for “False Mirror” for a long time, because we didn't know that the song would shoot. To be honest, I still don't buy out the success of “False Mirror”. Because Arsen just came to my house and recorded this hook. We needed to plug the number one spot on the tracklist. I quickly wrote a verse and put it in, and in the morning we had to send the release. And if I knew that the song would shoot, then at least the notes would be polished to perfection. But I hammered in a bolt, put in plugins and exported the track. I would never have put on a song like this.

- And Lizer?

- I think no. We put on “Kids” or a song about “I woke up yesterday and accidentally fucked the west”. The first one is more of my idea: I helped write the beat, came up with a hook and an idea. And “West” is purely Arsen's song.

- We have a cyber rap meme on our website, which came from your releases with Lizer. How do you yourself describe what you did then?

- I didn't go out with tumblr and looked for inspiration there. I realized that my music is based on futuristic thinking. I wanted to lay in creativity the voice of modern youth who surf the Internet and play video games. We wanted to do not pop, but with an avant-garde sound, closer to the underground.

By 2015, this wave of lo-fi rap came to us thanks to Yung Lean, Sad Boys, Bones. And we opened our eyes: I can sit at home and do cool. YungRussia, led by Pharaoh, understood the same. On this wave, his work began to flourish. Creative thinking appeared in Russian music, and the era of soundcloud began. The youth encouraged this.

At that moment I was making clips for the i61. I think while I was working with him, we exchanged experiences on a subconscious level. After that, by the way, Roma Acorn addressed and asked “the same thing as from Dopeclvb”. I did, he liked it. He's the first cyber-rapper - do you remember he had a song about “la-la-like”?

- “They look the same, they write the same music, it’s impossible to listen to them” - such comments are often found under the news about you, Lizer, the same Face. How do you react?

- No way. I read comments on The Flow and on YouTube. On "Rhymes and Punch" it is not interesting, not funny anymore. And when the dudes can do it cool, I get crazy. I treat myself with self-irony. I am okay with adequate criticism.

As for the appearance, I have always had a square. And then, when Vanyok (Face - approx. The Flow) bummed, this image stuck to him. What should I do? Nothing goes more. Now I will experiment with chemistry on my head here.

- “Fucked up rhyming in doubles and triples, 2018. The main thing is the melody and the vibe. The simpler the better, ”- for this tweet, including your readers pounced on you. Can you explain what you wanted to say?

- On Twitter, I'm such a kid, aggressive. Since childhood, it has gone: if I was walking around the district and they shouted something to me, I would turn around and ask “What do you want”, I will not pass by. And when they shout after me “Hey, Face!”, I start to answer. And I probably wrote this tweet in the heat of the moment.

There is intellectual rap, Oxxxymiron, there used to be Johnyboy. All this hip hop. For me it's rap with meaning, it's difficult. And it's not a secret for anyone that his time has already passed. The doors have now opened for simpler music. And it hooks more. For example, Yanix's latest release works on the same things as Lil Pump's music. Only by virtue of the richness of the Russian language can it be more interesting to wrap it up. I was just explaining that I didn't want to do that rap, but I wanted to do a new one.

- Did the Ural rap influence you at all?

- Until the age of 16, I was all on swag. It must have looked ridiculous: big K1X T-shirts, lowered pants, pigtails. And then he began to communicate with a slightly different circle of people. A little older, they did business in the area, drove planted cars. And I was just looking for an adventure in the ass. This is how the Ural rap leaked to me. Although I recently listened to the song AK-47 “Hear the baby” - the track sounds really high quality. Production, everything is volumetric - we rocked the whole area. And this crazy cat influenced me.

- In your work, the thought often sounds: byte is bad. At the same time, many have fair questions about the similarity of your song "Wheels of Love" and track Killy "No Romance".

- Yes, and there is a lot of it. This is the first time I got so much inspired by a certain artist. Before that, I did everything myself. Heard Killy's song and thought it was a really cool song. I showed it to beatmaker Highself and asked to do a beat in that direction. That beat was perfect for my voice, I knew that I could record a hit on it.

And Highself kicks off the beat - and he looks like fucking. I asked for a different version, but the whole vibe was lost there. I sat down to write the text, the first lines went fine, and then it turned out so that we returned to the first version - otherwise it did not work.

At first I thought I should sign this track as a Killy remix. But the dudes told me: if you submit it as my own, then there will be a wave of discussions and hate. And it will work a plus. The song bummed. By the way, no one spoke about the byte until the video was released. Although everything is there - a pure coincidence. They said, behold, they even dressed the same. But in the video I was in a fur coat, simply because the driver who drove us around Amsterdam gave me his own: I was in only jeans and it was really cold.

So yeah, I admit - there really is a similarity to Killy in this track. But as for my other songs - let someone try to catch my hand.

- When everyone was discussing Lizer's reposts, you wrote that it is not the reposts themselves that are important, but the fact that they are being discussed. Why?

- I've been making music for a long time. And creativity in my life is above the roof. But when I learned not only to make music, but also to work in it, I got a business side. And there are many tricks that provoke people into discussions. Everyone in schools discussed it: “You saw Lizer reposts!” Everyone was talking about this. Some hadn't heard of Lizer before and ended up listening to the album.

This is the perfect sundress. Borrowing from the West, blogging attacks - this is good PR. After each blogging statement, I add a thousand people on Instagram. Let them do it every day.

- You talked about duplicity in Russian rap and was glad that now you are moving solo. Is it about your former colleagues from "Sunset" or about the rap scene in general?

- About the rap scene. Live everyone says: "Glad to meet, like yourself?" But I can go into the correspondence and see how even in my shaggy years I turned to the same people, and they answered in pathos. And everyone pretends that everything is cool, although everyone is cocksucking each other behind their backs.

Therefore, it is more comfortable for me to move alone. I don’t want to rub in the same pot with Russian artists, constantly perform at festivals. I'm uncomfortable there. It's hard when a dude writes to me: "Let's make a track." I offer to see you, and he says he's busy. I cannot do creativity until I have established a personal connection. We need magic and vibe of songs. I see it more and more often in old people and less and less often in young people.

- Both you and Lizer are gradually moving away from rap towards more massive pop sounding. Is this a deliberate step?

- It's just that the genres have faded. My new release “Space Jam” is a good example. There is a purely rock song about MTV. There is trap, there is a song in the spirit of Lil Skies. I have a side that wants to make lyrics. And the side that is for bangers. Today, nothing prevents artists from moving calmly in different directions.

- Last question: in the video for “Internal” you are wearing a Real Madrid T-shirt from the mid-nineties, a pretty rare thing. Where did you get it?

- Everything is very simple. When I was born, my father already had this T-shirt. I don’t drown for “Real” and am not interested in football at all, but I always liked it, and he never gave it to me. The T-shirt is definitely more than 20 years old - and it has survived so well. And when we were going to fly to the shooting in Singapore, I thought that she would be very much at the box office, football jerseys are in trend now. I told my father: "This is such a rare item, I take it from you." At the last concert in Yekaterinburg, we changed: I gave him my bomber, and he gave me this T-shirt.
