Which is warmer than isosoft or holofiber. How much to hang in grams: how much insulation should be in outerwear

Hello my dear readers! Now we will figure it out together, which is the best to sew outerwear. Especially this question begins to bother when the idea of sewing a children's jacket arises. After all, you cannot check it yourself in a sock, test it.

And how you want to sew a winter or spring thing and not worry afterwards.
It's a little easier to sew on yourself, but you still need to figure it out first.

Everything heaters conventionally divided into natural (down, wool) and synthetic (synthetic winterizer, holofiber, isosoft, slimtex, tinsulate, etc.).
Synthetic heaters are not allergenic, microorganisms do not start in them, they keep their shape better than natural ones, keep heat well and do not let cold air inside, do not deform from washing. The material from which the insulation is made can be read on the label of the jacket. Most likely it will say “insulation - 100% polyester”, since any synthetic insulation consists of polyester fibers.
It is not the insulation that heats, but the air in its cavities, and the lighter the insulation, the more cavities it has inside and the lower the temperature at which you can use clothes with this insulation.
The amount of insulation depends on what time of year and weather conditions the clothes are designed for:
40-70 g / sq.m. - from 0 to +10
100-150 g / m2 - from -5 to +5
200-300 g / m2 - from -20 to 0.

Natural heaters

Fluff- the most common natural insulation, most often goose. Down is lightweight and keeps warm well, resistant to deformation. V pure form(100% down) in down jackets it practically does not exist, and good down jackets have a down content of 60-80%, the rest is feather.
When sewing down jackets are used certain materials, seams are processed in a special way,
because the fibers of the fluff want to go free all the time.
Down also has disadvantages: it is very allergenic, ticks start in it, the down jacket dries for a long time. An active child will feel hot in a down overalls at temperatures above -15 degrees.
Down jackets should be washed at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees, do not wring out, dry at room temperature (periodically you need to shake them so that the fluff does not crumple in the corners of the product), cannot be ironed.
Small dirt can be washed off with a soft sponge and washing powder by hanging the down jacket on a hanger in the bathroom and rinsing a little with a stream of water from the shower.

Wool- hypoallergenic, durable, retains heat well and absorbs moisture, but quite heavy. Retains heat down to -25 degrees. Sheepskin overalls are heavy, so they are now produced only for children under one year old. High-quality wool does not prick at all. Sheepskin clothes can be washed at 30 degrees and dried on a hanger at room temperature.

Batting- non-woven or knitted fabric. It is based on waste from the sewing or weaving industry. Synthetic, natural or regenerated fibers are processed in a specific way, after which they become loose and fluffy. They are evenly distributed and connected by special machines.

Batting can be 100% wool (the most expensive), 100% cotton and synthetic fibers.

The most widespread and demanded is semi-woolen material, consisting of 30% wool and 70% cotton, viscose or synthetics.

Synthetic insulation

Sintepon- consists of polyester fibers, which are bonded together by conventional bonding or heat bonding. Conventional gluing is not environmentally friendly because glue is used. Such a synthetic winterizer does not retain heat very well, it quickly loses its shape, it is heavy. It is used in the cheapest garments. Thermally bonded synthetic winterizer does not keep its shape very well, is short-lived, and is used in the production of inexpensive clothing. Clothes on padding polyester are suitable for temperatures up to -10 degrees. It is necessary to wash clothes on a padding polyester at a temperature of 30 degrees, using only soft powders without bleaching ingredients, you cannot soak and bleach.

Holofiber Is an improved synthetic winterizer. It is environmentally friendly, resistant to deformation, lightweight, retains heat well, breathes and does not absorb moisture. (see photo on the right). It is good to stuff pillows with holofiber.

Isosoft(Isosoft) - consists of many of the finest fibers, thanks to which the products have excellent heat-shielding properties, despite the fact that it is quite thin outwardly. Isosoft has a double-sided polymer coating that prevents fiber migration. Therefore, it is wear-resistant, and products with isosoft do not lose their shape after washing and wearing for a longer time than other heaters.

Thinsulate(Thinsulate) is one of the best synthetic fillers, in its structure it imitates natural fluff, while it is not allergenic and does not crumple during washing.
Possesses the highest heat-insulating properties and low density, perfectly keeps its shape. It is used in the production of expensive models of clothing for athletes, oil workers, climbers. Thinsulate will also warm you in severe frost (up to -30 degrees), if a person is actively moving.
Clothes with synthetic insulation must be washed at a temperature of 30 degrees, wrung out at no more than 1000 rpm, and cannot be ironed.

My experience of using thinsulate, slimtex, batting, etc.

By and large, all types synthetic insulation differ from each other by a maximum of 20%, and
one thin layer of expensive insulation will not be as warm as three layers of cheap insulation.
From his personal experience I can say that I sewed from batting, slimtex, tinsulate and synthetic winterizer.

And here are what characteristics: batting is heavy in principle, but if you insulate a short jacket, then it is quite convenient to use it.

I wanted to replace the fluffiness and puffiness of the padding polyester, and I tried slimtex... In fact, it is not as warm as the manufacturer claims, and for the winter it was normal in one layer, but not hot at all, but in two layers - it was already a heavy thing, so ... And Slimtex is also not flexible enough.
on the folds of the sleeves, he sometimes stood straight with a stake.

The most the best way showed himself thinsulate... I bought it in joint purchases on Osinka.ru. It is not easy to get hold of and is expensive at retail. Clothes with him are incredibly light, according to the figure, it seems: how can this jacket even warm in the cold ?! But there is one peculiarity. All areas of air access to the body MUST be closed, and this is the neck, arms (cuffs with an elastic band), and an elastic band at the bottom (if the model is not provided, then you can make an internal elastic band from knitwear), the main thing is that there is no access to air, so how thinsulate will not work otherwise if there is ventilation somewhere. In general, all ski clothing is sewn from thinsulate, it is convenient to move in it. And you MUST move in it, otherwise you can cool down)).

With thinsulate, you still get very good blankets, unrealistically light and warm, you just need to take the thickest thinsulate (special for sewing bedding). Quilts are generally easy to sew, and if you are not sewing yet, then let's learn to sew together!

Well, I decided to sew my last jacket just from a padding polyester, I wanted a blown effect, and I must say that I was very pleased with the result.
So watch my master class on tailoring a winter jacket. And sew and wear with pleasure !!

A bit of physics.

The best thermal insulator available to a person is air, and the more bound (still) air is retained in a unit of insulation volume, the better our clothes retain heat. At the same time, it is desirable that the material itself has a low density and weight, does not absorb extraneous odors and moisture, and is also durable, does not lose its shape during washing and in the process of wearing, and comply with strict environmental standards for children's clothing.
The cost of the insulation and its manufacturability in the production process are very important.
Conventionally, all heaters for children's clothing can be divided into two large groups: natural insulation and synthetic.

Natural heaters.

Natural fluff.
Currently, it is one of the most common and affordable insulation materials used in the production of children's clothing. It is very lightweight, retains heat well and easily regains its shape after deformation. The down of different birds is used, but, as a rule, goose down is used for the manufacture of children's clothing.
V is very important percentage down and feather. In a good down jacket, it is from 60% / 40% to 80% / 20%, where the first number is the amount of down. There is no 100% fluff, in principle, this is nothing more than a publicity stunt.
Down fibers are very mobile, which requires the use of special dense outer fabrics and lining for the production of children's clothing, which exclude the possibility of down "climbing" to the surface. All seams of down garments are also specially treated.
It should also be taken into account that down is an allergen and an excellent breeding ground for ticks, therefore, its antibacterial treatment is very important. Also, one of the main disadvantages of down can be attributed to its ability to absorb moisture and certain difficulties during washing. Truth in recent times models have appeared on the market in which the down is located between the lining and the upper fabric in a special cover and before washing it can be unfastened and taken out, which significantly reduces the drying time of children's down clothes.
When caring for downy items, it is very important to carefully read the instructions and strictly follow them. for care are as follows: the washing temperature should not exceed 30 * C, the product should not be wrung out, dried at room temperature, while periodically "shaken" so that the fluff does not crumble in the corners and then streaks do not appear on the upper fabric. Down clothes for children must not be ironed. In case of slight contamination, down jackets can be washed with washing powder with a soft sponge, hanging the clothes on a hanger above the bathtub or rinsing from the outside with a shower stream. Then the drying time will be significantly reduced.
Sheepskin or wool.
The advantages of this material include its durability, hypoallergenicity and wear resistance. Wool keeps warm well, but at the same time absorbs moisture well and has a lot of weight. a little hinder the movements of the child, so it is better to use it for sedentary children from birth to one year. Ideal for making baby envelopes and transformers. It is very good if the woolen lining is detachable, this allows you to expand the temperature regime for using children's clothing.
High-quality wool does not prick at all. One of the best woolen insulation is made from Merino New Zealand sheep wool because it does not absorb the smell of sweat.
Children's clothes with "sheepskin" can be washed at a temperature of 30 * C, and dried on a hanger at room temperature.

Synthetic insulation.

There are many types of synthetic insulation, but the principle of their work is absolutely the same. At the same time, the quality, properties and price can vary significantly, although often the difference between a very expensive insulation and insulation with average price only in different brands. Powerful advertising campaigns for expensive brands are always paid for by the buyer. The cost of delivery and customs clearance also strongly affects the price.
We will begin our review with the simplest and most affordable types.
Sintepon.
The synthetic winterizer is made from polyester fibers. The adhesion of fibers to each other can be carried out in two ways: gluing (adhesive based PVA emulsion is used) and thermal bonding. The glue padding polyester is not very environmentally friendly due to the use of glue, it quickly deforms and "cakes" under load and washing, it has a relatively high and uneven density, and, as a result, high weight, low thermal insulation capacity and air permeability. The migration of fibers in the glue padding polyester is very strong. Currently, in the production of children's clothing, it is practically not used; it can be found only in the cheapest products.
The thermally bonded synthetic winterizer is environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic, but due to the small area of contact of the fibers, it is relatively short-lived. In addition, with any method of adhesion, "cold bridges" are formed from the inside to the outer surface of the garment. Their thermal conductivity is much higher than that of air. This type of insulation has a high degree of fiber migration, rather low recoverability and dimensional stability. It is used in the production of inexpensive children's clothing.
Hollowfiber.
At its core, it is a patented trademark of one of the equivalents of padding polyester, but with extremely high consumer qualities. It has many less popular analogs with similar indicators and can already be considered a household name. Raw materials for production, technologies and equipment for such enterprises are supplied by the same firms, which are few.
The advantages of holofiber include high thermal protection, which is not inferior to the best and most expensive samples, environmental friendliness (the material is safe even for newborns), a high coefficient of recoverability and dimensional stability due to the springy structure of fibers. Accordingly, holofiber has a low density and weight. In its production, special thermal bonding of fibers plus calendering (compaction of the upper layer) is used, additional processing of the fabric at a temperature of 180 * C to reduce fiber migration. Holofiber does not absorb moisture at all and breathes perfectly. There are many types of holofiber with different thicknesses, but their correct selection is the concern of manufacturers of children's clothing, not buyers.
Isosoft. (ISOSOFT).
This type of insulation is completely similar to holofiber, but much more expensive due to the fact that it is produced in Belgium by LIBELTEX. The price is greatly influenced by the cost of delivery and customs clearance, as well as a massive advertising campaign.
Thinsulate. (Thinsulate)
Thinsulate is considered one of the best synthetic insulation materials, it practically imitates everything best qualities natural down, but at the same time it does not fall off during washing and is absolutely hypoallergenic. It consists of very fine fibers, ten times thinner than a human hair, and therefore has the highest heat-insulating properties and low density and weight. Thinsulate perfectly keeps its shape and restores its original volume due to the three-dimensional configuration of the fibers. The main disadvantage of thinsulate is its very high price.

Caring for synthetic insulation.

Allowed to machine wash at a temperature of 30 * C, spin at a speed not exceeding 1000 rpm. Ironing is prohibited.

The most frequent and stupid question.

What temperature is this children's clothing designed for? This question is most often asked by our new customers.
The ability of clothes to protect from the cold depends on many factors: on the type and thickness of the insulation, on the type of outer fabric and cut of clothes, on the strength of the wind, the time spent on outdoors, on the activity of your child and his individual characteristics. Shoes play a very important role, because no down jacket will warm a child with frozen feet. It is also important what is worn under the jacket or overalls, what kind of sweater or sweatshirt. Therefore, we can only talk about the average temperature of using the entire garment. Any of the high-quality heaters is able to provide protection from the most severe frosts.

Instead of conclusions.

The most important thing is to understand that different types high-quality synthetic heaters differ in their properties by no more than 20%, and air serves as the main thermal insulator. Therefore, all the talk about the fact that one layer of "expensive" insulation heats as well as four "others" are nothing more than advertising promises and deception of buyers. The thicker the layer of bound air, the warmer the baby's clothes. That is why all well-known companies produce heaters of different thicknesses for different conditions. It's just that it's much easier to make children's clothes more elegant with a thin insulation, and then prove for a long time to the parents of a frozen child that this cannot be, and all technologies are used from space.
Be reasonable, turn on your head!
Good luck to you!

Winter, as usual, is approaching inexorably quickly, so it's time to think about insulation. The insulation materials used for this will be the subject of this article.

A few words about materials:

  • the synthetic winterizer is inferior in quality to all others, it is gradually being replaced by other insulation, but it is the cheapest;
  • Thinsulate is produced in the USA, it is of high quality, but the price is also very high;
  • holofiber is a domestic development, in quality it is in no way inferior to thinsulate, but it is cheaper.

Now let's talk about all three materials in more detail:

Sintepon

Sintepon is a non-woven bulk material consisting of a mixture of polyester fibers, bonded by heat treatment or a binder. The main properties of padding polyester are the ability to retain heat, lightness, elasticity, bulk. For the production of this insulation, three main technologies are used:

  • needle punching method;
  • adhesive or emulsion method;
  • thermal method.

When using thermal technology, the synthetic winterizer turns out to be less fluffy, but its fibers are connected more evenly, due to which it holds the temperature better and does not allow moisture to pass through. Adhesive technology, on the contrary, provides fluffiness, but because of this, the material does not hold the temperature so well and is more susceptible to moisture

Outerwear, bedding, and other textiles are made on the basis of padding polyester; this material is used as a basis for furniture upholstery. It retains elasticity for a long time, does not attract dust, does not cause an allergic reaction, meets the requirements fire safety and has a relatively low price.

The adhesive synthetic winterizer has a number of serious disadvantages, including:

  • high "caking";
  • low environmental friendliness;
  • rapid destruction when wet;
  • strong deformation upon repeated compression;
  • low thermal insulation and air permeability;
  • uneven density;
  • high fiber migration.

The synthetic winterizer made using thermal technology has average thermal insulation values, it is environmentally friendly, which makes it more suitable for use than adhesive insulation. However, it has a low service life, is characterized by low recoverability and dimensional stability, and high fiber migration. Its cost, like other types of padding polyester, is relatively low and affordable.

Thinsulate

Thinsulate stands out against the background of many types of insulation for its outstanding heat-shielding and ventilating properties, it retains heat well and allows excess moisture to evaporate unhindered. It does not restrict movement, provides convenience and comfort, even a thin layer of this insulation has high heat-insulating properties. It is also durable, unpretentious, easy to care for. Thinsulet has shown itself well in Russian conditions, it is suitable for use even in the most severe frosts.

There are several types of thinsulate:

  • С "Classic" - this type is used for fashion and urban clothing and is available in three modifications:
  • C - without non-woven lining, attached to or by quilting at intervals of 10-18 cm
  • CS - has a one-sided non-woven gasket, can be fastened without quilting (the maximum panel size in this case is 35x45 cm) or, if it comes about panels big size, needs to be quilted at intervals of 1-0-25 cm
  • CDS - has a double-sided non-woven lining, its stitching step is 15 cm, thanks to which the insulation can be used freely suspended or by fixing the edge. When using this variety, there are no restrictions on the size of the cut panel.
  • Type Z, it is intended for children's, everyday and professional outerwear, gloves are also insulated with it, it is also available in several modifications that differ in density and thickness - P100, P150, P230. Any of the above options is suitable for quilting on conventional equipment. If you will be quilting through the product, the stitching pitch should be set in the range from 11 to 25 cm and be careful not to violate the specified interval.
  • TIB type, used when sewing sportswear, blankets, bedspreads, blankets, sleeping bags. Compared to other types of thinsulate, this insulation is more voluminous. It is also produced in several modifications, differing in thickness and density: TIB100, TIB120, TIB200. If you work with it, keep in mind that it is better to sew it with a double stitch, the step should be about 30 cm. The stitch design depends on the manufacturer. When using TIB type thinsulate, it is better to use high quality down-proof fabrics, the recommended weight is at least 270 threads.
  • Type B - this type of thinsulate is used to insulate shoes.
  • Type FR - thinsulate, which contains refractory meta-aramid fiber. This type of insulation is used for sewing fire-resistant clothing for people whose work involves a high risk of fire.

Holofiber

Holofiber is a heater with outstanding characteristics. It is an environmentally friendly material, which is confirmed by international certificates. This is a completely hypoallergenic insulation, it does not cause irritation and discomfort even in newborns. Its fiber has a soft elastic structure, so that the material can breathe and does not allow the body to sweat during prolonged use.

Holofiber does not absorb moisture and odors, has a long service life, does not support combustion, perfectly keeps and restores its shape, has high tensile strength.

One of the most important features this material is its structure. Holofiber fibers are shaped like a spiral spring, which creates an air cushion that holds its shape securely and ensures heat retention. To avoid free movement of fibers inside the web and to ensure a smooth surface of the material, holofiber is calendered, that is, processed with rollers at a high temperature.

This material can have weights from 40 to 4,000 g / m2. Optimum density of holofiber for urban winter clothes- 200-300 g / m2.

There are three main brands of this insulation - Soft, Medium and Hard, as well as a number of specialized modifications.

Holofiber Soft is a soft elastic non-woven fabric, which is mainly used in the production of outerwear and tourist equipment.

Holofiber Medium (Volumetric) is an excellent filler for children's toys and an important component for creating children's play complexes.

Both of these varieties are very pleasant to the touch, provide good thermoregulation, allow the skin to breathe, do not force it to sweat, and do not cause itching.

One of the popular varieties is holofiber in the form of balls (holofiber balls). It is a practical material that guarantees a particularly long-term use of things, which is confirmed by research results. Although manufacturers set the shelf life of their products within 1.5-2 years, there are data on things that have been used without loss of quality for 12 years, that is, 6-8 times longer.

Initially, holofiber with balls was developed as a filler for hospital and hotel pillows and blankets, but over time its outstanding performance characteristics were revealed, and the practicality of the new material also turned out to be at its best. Therefore, bedding with holofiber balls inside today can be found not only in hotels and hospitals, they are very lightweight and extremely comfortable. In addition to what was listed above, this type of insulation is used for the production of upholstered furniture, children's play areas, bedding and houses for pets, and a variety of designer products.

You can also add to the list of the advantages of this material that the products in which it is used are easy to wash, just clean, dry quickly after washing (this is due to the fact that the fibers do not absorb moisture), do not need complex special care. It is necessary to add to all of the above that holofiber does not support combustion. The pillows made from it were awarded the Quality Assurance mark from Soyuzexpertiza.

Holofiber balls are produced using a fairly simple technology. Each ball is an intricate weave of high quality, twisted synthetic micro-springs. Due to this weave, the dimensional stability and softness of the entire material is ensured, for the same reason it quickly restores its original shape. Holofiber balls are 100 percent polyester, no adhesive joints are used.

Holofiber Hard is a rigid non-woven synthetic fabric having broad scope application. It is extremely effective in heavily loaded elements of upholstered furniture, car interiors, etc. With a high surface density, Holofiber Hard can serve as a reliable substitute for foam rubber. Also, this insulation is used in the manufacture of mattresses, it can be used as a heat and sound insulating material.

Another type of holofiber is the holofiber TEK. This material is used when sewing professional winter overalls, for example, for oil and gas workers. It is also widely used in construction and agriculture.

How to care for different types of insulation?

All of the listed heaters - synthetic winterizer, thinsulate, holofiber - transfer storage in different ways. The attitude to care of these materials is also different. The structure of holofiber and thinsulate is such that practically no maintenance is required for these materials. Both insulation materials are well tolerated by machine washing or regular dry cleaning, they can be stored in vacuum packaging (but only if other materials used in the product allow it).

The synthetic winterizer needs more gentle care. It is not recommended to spin at high speeds after washing, as the material may tear. Vacuum storage is also undesirable, since it often leads to the fact that the synthetic winterizer cakes and loses its properties.

Holofiber is now the leader in terms of combining affordability, practicality, economy and environmental friendliness, thinsulate also has good characteristics, however, it is noticeably more expensive. Sintepon, alas, is inferior to these heaters, winning only in terms of cost.

Hollophane filler is a non-woven type material that is made from polyester fabric with a hollow structure. A filler is used to insulate autumn and winter clothes, reliably protecting from cold, wind and dampness.

Hollophane benefits

Due to the springy structure formed due to the interlacing of the spiral-shaped fibers, the hollophane insulation simultaneously retains heat and allows air to pass through, so the moisture evaporates and the "greenhouse effect" is not formed.

Additional benefits of the filler include:

  1. Environmental friendliness,
  2. No smell,
  3. Wind resistance,
  4. Durability,
  5. Comfort,
  6. The best heat-shielding effect in comparison with analogues.

In some cases, merino wool is added to the filler, which improves the characteristics of the material and prevents it from being exposed to bacteria. A healing effect was also noticed when wearing clothes with hollophane insulation, to which wool was added. Such clothes will help to avoid sciatica and reduce pain in spinal diseases.

With the addition of 30-35% wool, hollophane is guaranteed to protect against frost, therefore this proportion is used in the manufacture of clothing with increased heat-shielding qualities. Insulation is practically not inferior in characteristics goose down but outperforms him on price.

If there is a choice of which insulation to prefer, hollophane or synthetic winterizer, then it is better to give preference to the first material. New technologies were used in its production, therefore, the filler will better protect from the cold, and the addition of merino wool extends the service life of the insulation by 30-40%.

The filler is used to insulate jackets and overalls for children.

Temperature regime

When using hollofan insulation, the temperature regime of clothing is in the range from +5 to -35 degrees, depending on the density of the material. The density of 100-200 g / m2 allows you to wear clothes at a temperature of + 5 / -10 degrees, and the density of 200-400 g / m2 of hollophane is designed for temperatures up to -35 degrees.

Hollophane temperature table

In combination with the increased density of hollophane, a denser outer fabric is also used, which additionally enhances the heat and wind protection of the clothing and increases its wear period.

Filler care

Clothes in which hollophane is used are washed in ordinary washing machines setting the mode to 40 degrees and the minimum spin speed. Drying should not be done near heat sources; clothes are straightened and dried in an upright position.

It is impossible to soak products with insulation, since the material may lose its elasticity and its performance will decrease.

Last time I talked about the difference between natural and synthetic insulation, and today, as promised, I will tell you about how to choose the right amount of insulation.

Most of the outerwear manufacturers besides temperature regime also indicate the amount of insulation used in grams. The number of these grams means how many grams will weigh square meter insulation. This information is rarely indicated on the labels, but this information is always in the manufacturer's catalogs and we always write about the amount of insulation in the product cards. Let's try to figure out what kind of weather things are designed for with this or that amount of insulation:

up to 100 g- clothes for cold spring and autumn. These things can be worn down to 0 degrees with a warm intermediate layer.

140-180 gr- clothes for the off-season and warm winter... It is this amount of insulation that is used by brands that produce clothing in the “sports winter” category, for example, Reima, Lassie, Didriksons 1913. Such clothing presupposes the observance of the principle of layering and is suitable for active children such as winter version... Toddlers and not very active children can wear such things up to a maximum of -10 degrees.

200 - 250 gr- in our assortment, such a quantity of insulation is offered by the brands Luhta and Icepeak. Such clothes are suitable for the winter (up to -25 degrees) for children from 2 years old, and the smallest can comfortably walk in such things up to -15 degrees.

280-330 gr- very warm clothes up to -30 degrees. This is produced by Kerry, Gusti, Deux par Deux, Huppa. Kids can wear such things from 0 degrees, on a thin blouse, and active children will feel hot at temperatures above -5 degrees.

Please note that the amount of insulation is indicated for jackets and overalls; in trousers, 1.5-2 less insulation is always used for the same temperature regime.

What else to pay attention to so as not to freeze:

  • It is better to put on an additional jacket than switch to more warm clothes, because a sweating child will freeze much faster
  • Clothes can be additionally insulated with a fleece or fur lining, which is equivalent to 40-60 grams of insulation
  • Choose things made of durable, non-blown fabric, because if the child is penetrated by the wind, no insulation will save.

Enjoy your walks.
