History of the icon The history of writing and the author of this icon are unknown; its origin dates back to the end of the 18th century. After the death of Rev. Seraphim, abbot Nifont transferred the image to the nearby Diveyevo convent in the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which was under the patronage of Elder Seraphim. For this purpose, a special chapel was built in the cathedral, dedicated to her name - the Tenderness of the Mother of God, and the icon was placed in a special elegant icon case. Since those times, there has been a tradition: all nuns of the monastery stand behind the icon case of the Mother of God during the service.
The icon was celebrated on July 28 and December 9 (the founding day of the monastery).
In 1902, Saint Emperor Nicholas II presented the monastery with a precious gilded robe for the Tenderness icon and a decorated silver lamp.
Metropolitan Seraphim (Chichagov) composed a special service for the illustrious icon. To the discovery of the relics of St. A copy of Seraphim from the icon was made for the Sarov Monastery. After the canonization, the production of lists began in the icon-painting workshops of the Diveyevo Monastery and its courtyard in Peterhof. The icon was depicted in various printed publications and in hagiographic images of St. Seraphim.
In the post-revolutionary period, when the Diveyevo monastery was closed, the icon of the Mother of God was taken to Murom by the Diveyevo Abbess Alexandra. In 1991, the miraculous image was handed over to Alexy II, the Patriarch of Moscow, who placed the icon in the patriarchal church, where it is currently located. Once a year, the miraculous image - on the Feast of the Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos - is taken to the Epiphany Cathedral for veneration. All Orthodox Christians who wish can venerate it.
The Diveyesky Monastery now houses an exact copy of the miraculous image.

Icon of the Mother of God “Tenderness” Novgorod

Residents of Novgorod have been venerating another icon of the Mother of God “Tenderness” for almost 700 years. She is known for numerous miracles that occurred from prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos. The Blessed Virgin protected the city from fires, devastation and wars. Thanks to fervent heartfelt prayer in front of this holy image, many people received healing from spiritual sorrows and bodily illnesses.
The history of the icon can be traced from the inventories of the Assumption Cathedral only from the 18th century. Until this time, she is lost in numerous icons of Tenderness and waist-length Mother of God. Without specifying the iconographic type, the inventory of 1701 mentions in the icon case near the northern pillar on the north side a “waist-length image of the Most Holy Theotokos” in a silver frame. The inventory of 1771-1773 repeats this entry, adding to it the enumeration precious stones wearing the crowns of the Virgin Mary and Jesus. That this icon is an image of the Mother of God of Tenderness of the 12th century, as evidenced by her schematic image published in 1911 by N.P. Likhachev from an 18th century engraving. The inventory of 1815-1818 indicates that the icon was in the same place - at the north-eastern pillar on the north side, but had a different, simpler frame (probably the ancient precious one was stolen by Napoleonic troops in 1812).
In the inventories of 1841-1843 and 1853-1854, the icon is already called “Athos”, and the postscript mid-19th century to the first of these inventories reports the movement of the icon to the iconostasis at the southern wall of the cathedral. The name “Athos” is associated with the newly-minted shrine - the Akathist Hilandar Icon of the Mother of God. When the icon was renewed and a new silver frame was made for it in 1875, the inscription “Akathist of the Most Holy Theotokos located in the Hilendar monastery of Savva the Serbian” was minted on the field of the frame. At the same time, the iconography of the Moscow icon differs from the Athos icon.
The icon was unveiled from its massive silver frame of 1875 in 1961. At the same time, the darkened drying oil was removed, under which the painting was first discovered late XVII - early XVIII centuries (perhaps this record belongs to the royal isographer Kirill Ulanov, who during this period was engaged in renewing a number of ancient icons of the Assumption Cathedral). Upon further opening of the icon, paintings from the 12th-13th centuries were discovered.

Icon of the Mother of God “Tenderness” Novgorod. End of the 12th century.

The icon is of Novgorod origin. The master copied the Byzantine prototype, combining in the icon elements of iconographic types - Hodegetria and Tenderness. The Baby Jesus, although pressing his cheek to the head of the Virgin, is depicted in a pose typical of the Hodegetria version. IN right hand he holds a scroll, and the left one is depicted with a semblance of a blessing gesture (her fingers are unclenched, as in the iconography of Tenderness, where left hand The Divine Infant is depicted pointing towards the cheek of the Mother of God). According to academician V.N. Lazarev, “this kind of contamination of various iconographic types once again speaks of the work of a local master who, unlike the Byzantines, was not accustomed to accurately copying prototypes.”
The faces and clothes on the icon have been preserved; there are losses on the halo, the golden patterns of the Virgin Mary’s scarf and the soil in the margins. The icon board is placed on all sides.
