In Life of Pi, one of the main characters is named Richard Parker and he is a tiger. He plays an important role in the storytelling, and many viewers loved the story of this animal. In this article you can learn about it complete information based on the plot of the picture.

The beginning of the plot and the first appearance in the film

The story of the picture begins with a guy named Pi telling his story famous writer Yannu Martelu is already in Canada, who wants to capture her. It all starts at a time when the young man was still going to school. Many laughed at his full name Pisin, but the guy didn't care about that. At the age of fifteen, the parents told the protagonist that they would have to leave India. Since his father was the director of the zoo, they took some of the animals with them in order to sell them already in Canada. Among them was Richard Parker, who got his name from the hunter who caught the tiger. Initially, they wanted to call him Thirsty, but it happened differently.

Development of history

With Richard Parker and other animals on board, the Pisin family left India on a Japanese ship. After four days of sailing in Manila, they were overtaken by a storm that the protagonist had never seen before. He went out on deck in order to enjoy the action of the elements. At this time, the wave had already carried several sailors overboard, and Pi was thrown into the nearest boat. The fifteen-year-old was promised to find his parents, but fate decreed otherwise. In a small boat there was a cook with him, but he was thrown out of there by a zebra. The animals broke free, and therefore there was still a hyena in the boat, an orangutan named Orange, and the last guest was the tiger Richard Parker.

All this the protagonist had already discovered after the storm, when the ship carried far from them. cargo ship... The struggle for food began in the middle of the open water area. The hyena kills a zebra with a broken leg. After that, she aimed at Pi, but the monkey saves the character and herself becomes a victim. At this time, the tiger was hiding under a stretch and at the right moment jumped out on the hyena, which had no chance to survive.

Continuation of the struggle

Richard Parker becomes the only predator on the boat that poses a threat to the life of the protagonist. That is why the guy builds a small raft and ties it with a rope to the boat. There he throws all the supplies, and he himself makes attempts to somehow become the first number in the boat. Since Pi is a vegetarian, he could only eat biscuits, which were stored in the rescue boat. They are scattered along with the raft by a whale, which was disturbed by a careless guy at night. Starvation began, which ended in a fierce struggle for food at the time of the invasion of flying fish. A large predatory representative was thrown aboard with them. Richard Parker and Pi began to fight for him in every possible way, but the main character, thanks to perseverance, won. Their journey together did not end there.

Final scenes

Because of the name of the tiger, it is often confused with the main character of the novels. American writer Richard Stark. Parker is his last name, and therefore there is a confusion in the names. In the film Life of Pi, the main character with the animal managed to visit the most diverse islands and see a huge number of sea inhabitants. Once, on a small piece of land, Pisin found a human tooth in a flower.

Fate was favorable to the two travelers, and they were able to reach the coast of Mexico. During this time, Richard Parker became very emaciated, but managed to jump over the guy when they were on the beach. The tiger immediately saw the rainforest and headed there. Before entering, he stopped for a while, and then simply ran into him. The main character was upset by the fact that their relationship ended at such a moment, but Richard never returned to say goodbye.

Life of Pi became my 2105th film in a row. Before watching it, as a sophisticated film fan, I was sure that this movie would not catch me (I even mentally drew him an estimate, a kind of 6 - 7, for special effects), but I was wrong. This film, in addition to the successful directorial and cinematography finds, is an example of an instructive philosophical parable successfully transferred to the screen. The film is so large-scale that it will not be possible to tell about it in 2 words. So in order. The beginning of the film is rather prosaic: a young Canadian writer comes to the emigrant teacher, on the advice of friends, looking for inspiration for his new book. The Indian promises to tell a story in the course of which the writer must necessarily find not only new topic for his book, but also God in his soul, to which the writer only smiled ironically

The history of an Indian begins with the fact that in a certain Indian province there lived a boy with unusual name Pi. He grew up in a wealthy family that had its own small business in the form of your own zoo. Since childhood, the boy has been in very greenhouse conditions, surrounded by loving family and animals.

But this idyll comes to an end when the Father announces that their business is on the verge of ruin and the only way out which he sees is emigration to Canada. At the same time, he wants to take animals to Canada, which can be sold there, gaining good money and investing in a new business.

No sooner said than done, and now we see how the whole family is sailing on a Japanese ship, in the holds of which there are cages with the very animals. The ship is large, so a lot of motley audience floats on it, with some of the family more or less good relationship, while with others, for example with a local cook (performed by the outstanding Gerard Depardieu), relations do not work out, since he flatly refuses to indulge their Buddhist vegetarian diet.

After a few frames, we, together with the narrator, become witnesses of a monstrous shipwreck, during which, in a terrible turmoil, our hero, a zebra with a broken leg from a transported Zoo, fell into a boat out of nowhere, and a tiger and a hyena hiding under a tarp, find themselves in a lifeboat thrown into the water ... Later, in the morning, the boy also rescues an orangutan from the water.

After some time, the hyena wakes up and begins to establish its own rules, trying to bite, then the boy, then the monkey, then the zebra. In the end, the slobbering beast's reflexes take over everything else and she pounces on the dying zebra. The screams of the boy and the monkey did not cool the hyena's ardor, and in a few minutes she had already started a terrible meal. After some more time, the hyena turned its predatory gaze on the monkey, starting to court it too. Exhausted from hunger and dehydration, she periodically gave slaps to the hyena, but as a result, the predatory mood of the insatiable creature prevailed and the monkey was already convulsing at the bottom of the boat in a pool of its own blood. The boy from powerlessness with a blunt knife and screams rushed at the hyena, which was already ready to plunge its powerful jaws into his throat, but then another participant in the drama comes to the fore, the Tiger, who, as it turned out, was reclining from rolling under a large tarpaulin. With a lightning strike, he breaks the giggling creature in half. However, this does not make it easier for the boy, since sailing in a boat with an angry tiger is a more difficult task than traveling with a hyena.

And here, frame by frame, we become witnesses of how the mutual respect of man and the tiger grows, as step by step, thanks to the efforts brave youth, the tiger copes with his instincts and becomes his friend and helper. The journey is extremely long, seasoned with philosophical reasoning, so the scope of this review is not enough to describe all this action. Therefore, we move on to the unexpected ending of the film. After all the misadventures, the boat eventually washed up on the shores of Mexico, the emaciated boy and the tiger crawl ashore and, the next moment, the tiger, without even turning around, dissolves into the jungle. Our hero is still found by local fishermen, and now he is already lying in tears in a rehabilitation center and answering the questions of Japanese investigators (after all, if we remember the ship was Japanese).

The boy's story about an unusual journey with animals does not suit the Japanese, since there are many inconsistencies in it. And, in the end, meticulous samurai force the boy to tell what really happened. After several phrases of the boy, the viewer, together with the investigators, realizes that the entire previous story is an allegory, an attempt by the child's consciousness to forget the horror that actually happened to him during these long weeks of wandering in the ocean, an attempt to transform actions and consequences into forms that are less traumatic for consciousness. ... We begin to understand that a zebra with a broken leg is not a zebra, but a young sailor who broke his leg during a fall and painfully died from infection, that a kind orangutan is not an orangutan, but actually the boy's Mother, who miraculously escaped and was also in that boat ... A couple of phrases and the viewer realizes that that maddened hyena is none other than that fat Canadian cook who could not cope with his base instincts and literally turned into a monster in just a week. Having finished off the dying sailor, he began to devour him, and in response to the protests of the boy and his Mother, he only beat them. A couple of days after this incident, in the process another quarrel, the cook brutally stabbed the boy's mother, throwing her into the water, where in front of her son's eyes she was torn to pieces by sharks. And here, in waves, the viewer finds another insight that after all, the tiger is an allegory. The tiger is that anger that escaped from the pure soul of a child after everything he saw, the tiger is God, this is a priori higher justice, which made a thin young hand take a knife and rip open the belly of a mad hyena in human form.

At the very end of the film, the big sad eyes of the narrator (adult Pi) again appear before us, who invites the dumbfounded writer to choose one of the two stories, which he considers to be true. The writer understands all the horror that this man experienced, who clothed this horror in metaphors and allegories, which probably helped him not to go crazy, to stay a normal person and even achieve some success in life. And he rightly chooses the allegorical fairy tale with a tiger, because it is better to believe that under the conditions of trials, the Tiger has become more human than that a person could turn into a vile hyena in a week of difficulties
